I think your way to talk and treat Korean people is kinda offensive and dominative. no offense. you know most Korean people cant listen and speak english fluently like natives. they actually have busted thier ass to communicate with fore
igners with languages, which are not their own one. so in my opinion, you'd better to approach them kindly.

The student who was sorry about Koreans not being able to speak well in English SHOULDN’T BE SORRY!!! Like Korea is Korea and we have our own language. If any foreigners have problem with us not being able to speak good English should know the world doesn’t evolve around them and need to open their minds.

@Aldo Steel Yes, I can. Koreans learn English starting from elementary to college (not all do this though) as we know that English is an universal language. However, this fact should not change the belief that ALL Koreans should be able to speak English fluently.

if you could say "hello" and "thank you" in Korean or "I am sorry, I can't speak Korean well, May I speak English to you?" like that, it would be nice to have a small talk and ordering the food. but on the other hand, it is a problem why many Korean people couldn't speak English even though they spend a lot of time and money to study English for almost 10 years over.

it's the same thing in the french system. Since elementary school we take english classes to graduation, but some are still bad. And since most of the high school students go (there are french schools kinda everywhere in the world) / stay in France for their studies, they don't have any interest to learn it.

I don't think so tourist should be blamed. You can still practice it with friends or international social friends apps. I think one of the reason is Korea is less dependent on countries like US as they produce a lot of things like Samsung and other things, thus the need to understand English is not really exist there. They could get many information just in their language.

I get what you mean, but the Korean language is not a generally-accepted world-wide used language. What if he isn't asking the question as an admonishment of the people (as you are assuming), but rather out of genuine curiosity? Maybe there would be a genuine answer, such as schools not teaching it, teaching only at young ages, or low english-speaking tourism?

    • @rihannathompson8993
      @rihannathompson8993 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I think most schools teach it, plus english is a more widely used language in the world so it would make sense to learn. You're in my country and your asking Korean people who grew up speaking our official language - Korean. And plus, I think their English is good from what I've seen from this video. this is a nice vid. not a lot of this in yt. you show this pov style on the ground with people. this is great. the best thing to learn any language as a monolingual is to expose yourself to movies media books and read k12 grammar. you dont need to go to school to learn korean or many international languages at all. self study is enough rest is just feedback from the real world learning real stuff compared to the boring school stuff although buying loads of academic books is always a blessing and also a necessity. watching english movies helped me a lot although watching american movies made it hard to understand british and irish accents and their own idiomatic and colloquial language. thanks for the video. this is just me reflecting here hehe

IMO as a Korean temporarily living in Tokyo, The biggest reason why most of Korean can't speak English fluently is that Korean belongs to totally different language family, Ural Altai while English, French,German and Spanish etc. belong to Indo-European language family. If some languages belong to the same language families, it mean it is easy for them to learn the language and achieve the ability. For example, Koreans learn Japanese very easily and vice versa bcuz they belong to same language family while Germans learn English quite easily and vice versa. So Koreans who can speak Japanese fluently are not that big deals here and vice versa. Are Germans who speak English fluently big deals there??? I don't think so. Hope you understand why there are not many Koreans who can speak English fluently even though Koreans students are well known for one of the best in the world and learn English quite for a long time.

No .But still they gotta learn and speak English. But for example if an Indian is weak or not good at English, people make fun of them and say that "OH HE /SHE is an Indian .They dk English lol. But since it's South korea,if they ain't speaking English why are people supporting them like "THEY ARE SOUTH KOREANS ,they don't have to learn English " like wow .I guess it's mainly cuz the kpop and BTS are from South Korea :)

I learned in linguistics class in college that India, Pakistan and most of countries in Middle East belong to Indo-European language family, which mean people living there learn English ( also Indo-European language family) much easier than Koreans and Japanese. Hey I think this is a nice video. I think the 4 guys (1 that you interviewed in the train station I think, the one that asked you if it was your first day in Busan, the one where the guy said something about the tour guides speaking English and all are different, and that was probably going to give you the coffee) all spoke nice English I think. But I think this video was okay and kind of nice video. I think you had many fast forward spots in this video. But I think this video is alright for foreigners that understand English from any other country aside from Korea that will be traveling to Korea as their final destination for a long trip and are also looking to see if many people understand a lot of English very well so at least if they run into somebody there that understands and speak English in Korea, they will know whether or not if they do understand English. However I recommend for foreigners that are traveling to Korea, I suggest that they learn to understand and speak the Korean language so that they know what to do if they get lost, know where to find good restaurants to eat at for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, know where to find the nearest grocery or drug store, and etc.

The average level of proficiency in English is relatively low in highly developed east asian countries like South Korea or Japan. I think that it has a lot to do with linguistic distance. There are empirical studies with diplomats from the USA who learn foreign languages in an intense structured setting, and they learn languages like German in one-quarter of the time than they learn Korean or Japanese. I'm from Germany and most people here speak English relatively well and it's extremely easy for us to learn it, but even highly educated people often make a lot of basic mistakes.
I guess the reactions could be different if you would talk a little slower.

Now from my experience a lot of South Koreans choose to learn Mandarin as a secondary language because I mean it makes a lot of sense really. Chine is right besides them and nearly 20ish yrs ago South Korea didn‘t have a lot of tourists nor a great economy therefore there was no need for them to learn the „international“ language english.

5:54 It was outright rude to ask this sweet guy like that! It is painfully obvious why. Because it is not adopted as an official language or taught compulsorily in elementary schools. Koreans learn English in school just as Americans learn Spanish but they don't get to practice in conversation.
If you were to start speaking Spanish to non-hispanic american people, they'd struggle too.
fyi, Koreans use a lot of English words in everyday language, so if you, a tourist, really want to communicate and the other person doesn't understand, use only short words. ex: 1apple, how much? Return car 1day early, money back?

Basically, the Korean government and the nation have placed tremendous emphasis on learning English, as it being the international language, over the past several decades. However, the focus has been on comprehension and almost none on speaking or writing - (just a tad on listening).
Korean students, starting from 3rd elementary are taught English in schools and quite a few others even earlier in private institutions (hagwons). On average, Korean students spend enormous hours studying English but only excel in vocabulary and comprehension. This is one of the sad, sad tales of the Korean Educational System where the ultimate purpose of learning English in schools is to get high marks on exams rather than “communicating” as is the purpose of any language.
