Despite the title, I am looking forward to the new Mitsubishi Triton (L200) Ute - but in some aspects it does have me scratching my head a little...
It needed more power, so they slapped on another turbo. It needed a new interior, so they put in something I would consider almost-luxurious. They upgraded its towing capacity (finally!!!) - but then decided to put drum brakes on the rear. Strange choices like this, which are frankly silly in my opinion, make me both excited but also a little worried for the new Triton - especially when Utes like the Kia Tasman Ute are on the horizon. So here is everything you need to know about the upcoming Mitsubishi Triton Ute!

My first hilux in the 80's had 65kw power and 180 nm torque and I carried all sorts of big loads in the back. Now people reckon they need 500nm to pick the kids up from school.😂😂😂

Your 100% correct people complain because it's not a v8 in these Ute's yet complain that fuel prices are through the roof
Yep, my mate had a non turbo D22 Narvara that was a workhorse, given zero love, went everywhere slowly. He named it trusty.
It didn't have alarms for seat belts, headlights or door open and we lived 😆

I towed a trailer with two motorbikes and a bunch of stuff across Australia for a move in a Holden VY. Everyone gave me weird looks like they couldn't understand that you don't need a 4x4 v8 to tow a trailer haha
I'm looking forward to how the Pajero Sport will be like since I'm eyeing the current one.
I work on both Mitsubishi and Isuzu and can honestly say more capacity doesn’t make a better Ute the differential alone in a Mitsubishi is comparatively larger than the Isuzu. The engines are both extremely reliable but in reality there really is no real feeling of more from the 3,0L in the Isuzu the Mitsubishi is an animal their engineering is always on point, just a real shame they didn’t do rear discs. But “maybe they will see the niche for an ralliart version” and we’ll see the rear discs there.
I think drum brakes will always have the better handbrake hold so it doesn’t roll onto the transmission , when parked with a trailer in tow I’d prefer drum brakes , as for the brakes themselves if used properly and your trailer brakes are adjusted correctly you’ll never have a problem .
Drum brakes are almost useless. Difficult to maintain, fail when wet or muddy, get clogged, don't handle heat. Do you think ford fitted disk brakes because they are worse?
@@cmadventures6077 did you read and understand what I wrote , disc brakes are better for dealing with heat but it’s a ute not a race car , when tradies pull up with a trailer on the back parking on a hill the drum brake has more surface area and will hold far better , there easy to maintain adjust clean and replace , I’ve been dealing with drum brakes for 30 years .
If you go slopping around in mud holes all the time then drum brakes need some love to keep clean. But reality is that drum brakes work well and have so for many years.
@@JRiddledickDangerfield electric handbrakes also don’t tolerate mud and deep water very well , also I’ve had many towed in with seized on electric handbrake motors after driven on sand / beaches

I’ll put a deposit down now if I could for the new Pajero Sport. Love that interior (on the Triton, of course). And hey, real buttons….more space, and well placed cup holders. Winner winner chicken dinner.
I love the drum brakes on my triton 2016, and i love the fact that is the only car i tested that the park brake works extremly good.
And the previous generation triton, with it's 'terrible' drums brakes will put perform a new Ranger Raptor with a 100-0kmh test.
Mitaubishi played their cards well. Yeah no V6 and other none critical amenities, sure. They know their customers, and it's place in the market, if all features people are complaining about were included price would match top tier hikux and ranger money and people would not go for it. People how buy it want dependability, ease of use and realistic pricing. Only the drum brakes seem inexcusable otherwise they did a really awesome job.
I couldnt disagree more with some of the thoughts on this. In NZ where I live even the current gen Triton gets a 3.5 ton tow rating and does a bloody good job at it. What's more important for control over a heavy trailer than the NM or the rear drum brakes is having a centre diff that lets you tow in 4WD on tarmac. Hilux still cant do that.
Makes perfect sense to me to take the existing motor which seems to generally be regarded as the most reliable diesel powertrain in utes at the moment and increase its output over developing a whole new running gear. It still isnt running as hot as the Ranger 2.0L bi turbo which suggests to me they are still being conservative to prioritise reliability whole likely lowering emissions.
I wouldn't have called the current triton lethargic at best either. The previous generation with the 5 speed was lethargic at best. You just can't make the v6 ranger the new benchmark for previous generation utes. In light of emissions standards I think Mitsubishi would have been crazy to develop a V6 powertrain.
Completely agree with you mate. You explained the reason behind that drum brake perfectly, given how they have increased the towing capacity for this new gen. And yes, for all the people complaining why there is no V6 trim level for the new Triton, with the new emissions regulation, Mitsubishi would be crazy to pour money into developing a thing they would not ever be able to compete quite as well against others. They knew their customers well, and they played their cards right.
Trition has to be ahead of the competition in all aspects ...if rear drum brakes over discs works better why not. If engine is under powered *4 banger instead of 6 and yet delivers well within co2 emission why not. Mitsubishi knows if you can't beat them then partner and produce the best ute ever
The triton cops a bit of flak around the fire but in reality my farthers business has ran tritons for over 30 years and they all get overloaded then get a stonking gravel or tool trailer behind it every day and they just keep going plus the power delivery of the old 2.5td is pretty potant and can even be a bit of fun unloaded
Yeah the 4d56 is one hell of a motor. They will keep going and going once maintained and almost never leave you stranded.
I like the Square shape of new Triton. . The single cabs looks like it can carry a lot of load at the back.👍👍

What is the gvm/gcm figures looking like for top spec dual cab?
Is it a twin scroll turbo or bi turbo
Secondly is the 184hp version GVT turbo?
Wonder if the Navara and Mitsy grilles are interchangeable
TBH the looks aren’t all that important to me unless they are downright ugly. It’s function that matters most, so the brakes and the twin turbo are a worry.
The Super select 4wd is my favourite part of Mitsubishis so if they don’t go to poorly on the rest, I’m good with it.
Don't know what all the carping on about drum brakes is about. Granted discs were going to better if a lot of driving is through water & mud. But really how many are going to see this action. 1%?. Hand brake works far better with drums. We've used them as work utes since 2006 & never at an issue with the drum brakes.

Also I'm worried about the longevity of fully digital displays (seen on many new cars) are we gonna start up the car in 10 years and find the pixels dead or the software no longer compatible, nothing compares to the longevity of an analogue gauge (2001 Subaru forester owner)
Retro fit a new aftermarket system, cant be that hard.
Why does the steering wheel design/layout and infotainment system similar to the newer Nissan cars?

All in all Mitsubishi know their stuff...from Mitsubishi Zero plane that survived the 2nd world war without significant design or power upgrade ...yet remained highly incredible agile reliable and fast against allied latest fast airmanda of planes
I want a 2 door! Drum brakes?
Dont feel like Mitsy are targeting top spot. They look like they want number 3 spot and everything seems better than a Dmax. More power and torque. Bigger infotainment and driver display. Bigger tray. Maybe even a cheaper price? Going after Ford and Toyota might be impossible but the Dmax would be achievable.
This will be significantly better than the Dmax/BT50. They may even get some Hilux/Ranger buyers who are a little concerned about ecomics- most of us are on more restrictive budgets these days.
You are complaining about the engine power, but bear in mind that it's the same engine across their range, not three different engines like the Ranger. If they were aiming for power/sophistication levels of the Ranger/Hilux, they would have to charge more. And you did say it- the Triton is about value and reliability.
It's nice but they've moved away from what made a Triton a Triton - short wheel base (tight turning circle), narrow track width (easier to squeeze down tight trails) and light weight (it didn't need big output to drive well). Everything has been made bigger to emulate the competition, which has sacrificed its characteristic nimbleness.
Mitsubishi is the smarter choice.
Very reliable and priced better than the rest.
Will the price increase in 2024?
Yes they already reveal price few day ago, each model is 3000 $ higher than current model . That is expect , the impression of people test drive said the truck few more luxury inside and drive more comfortable and stronger so that is the price to pay .

Personally I wish we didn't continue to see ute sizes increase. They are now marketed at luxury grocery getters that are both dangerous for pedestrians, bad on emissions and less practical for the people who should actually be using utes: farmers, tradies etc.
The engine sizes, number of gears and number of turbos seem to be increasing too - for some.
For years, the Ranger and the Hilux have been at the top of the Ute market. As a ute designer, all you have to do is look at the reviews on the competitors, then make a ute that has all of the positive features and none of the negative. I think Mitsubishi missed an opportunity to improve.

I still own the 2005 Rodeo Colt 2.8TDi (Still in Love with this Bakkie/Ute ... I was obviously very upset when they ended that line and lost the market to the Hilux.. This 6th Gen Strada looks promising but it's not good enough to take on the overpriced Hilux .... But if KIA is now a real threat, Mitsubishi better pull up their boring socks!😢
And let's be honest, this new model looks a bit like the previous gen Ranger along the body lines...
I think they've got the balance between features, reliability and price just right. It won't be for everybody, but it will be for a lot of people.

I have a soft spot for Mitsubishi as my first car was a TR Magna but I think this car will struggle. The premium ute category is crowded with very good vehicles such as the Ranger and the VW. The Hilux has a great reputation and loyal customers and the D-Max is pretty good too. The Triton's selling point has been it's cheap price but the Chinese are increasingly making decent utes that are targeting the cheaper section of this segment so I'm not sure where the Triton is actually going to fit. It's little late to the party too...
Sure, the Chinese Utes are cheap, but would you actually buy one? I for one would opt for a Mitsubishi every day of the week, as you can be reasonably sure that even if you aren’t getting the fanciest vehicle in its class, it is still going to do it’s job very well, and be reliable. For context, between my father and myself we have 60+ years of experience as a mechanic, we both have Mitsubishis.
@@rsoul7282 everyone mocked the Japanese for having poor reliability several decades ago. Things are changing and the Chinese are getting better, and people are buying them. Personally I'd wait another 5 years to buy something Chinese made as safety is important for me.
I disagree, I think the reliability and price balance is perfect here- they are offering quality closer to the big two than before, but still significantly cheaper.
Mitsubishi got the highest advance futuristic technology than toyota because mitsubishi is the first oldest japanese car and heavy industry more engineer qualified in so many technology field such as aircraft ,rocket,satelite,nuclear power plant,ship building engine,caterpillar,heavy machinery,train ,factory machine ,bank,real estate,lif,electronic ,electric and many many more large and small
Utes may be a male dominated buyers market
But they end up being driven by stressed-out housewives who can't drive poorly-handling utes and need to pop another valium

Can lane assist/adaptive Cc able to be turned off, like the last model. If not that's a deal braker for me. You love that crap, I HATE IT

my concerns are ..... drum brakes = fail, front face = fail, no full digital dash on upper specs = fail, small infotainment screen = fail, no v6 engine option = fail, rear view camera position = fail, square wheel arches = fail. theres still a ingnition key blank on the steering column = fail. come on mitsi this is a half assed attemt and just a joke.

@@mrz1281 because they don't want to be top pickup truck. Mitsubishi is happy to be in the 3rd place or within top 5. That's their goal at the moment. They are offering their cars within a sweet spot price. Not too many people want all the 'blings' . They want functionality and reliability.
That is a very ugly, underpowered Ute.
Worst design ever , rear drum brakes really 😢wake up Mitsubishi, bring back the original Pajero
