different car review hi, I’ve got a problem with my Bmw f10 2012 model, basically every other day I have to refill up the water coolant tank and is something I never used to do before, so I went to the garage to get it checked and they said that there isn’t any Water leaking sign through the pipes or anything like that so they told me to just to change the water coolant tank, so I’ve changed the water coolant tank but bear in mind it wasent a brand new I bought it of another Bmw the same model as mine which means it was used, and I didn’t think that would cause any problems but still I’m still having the same problem, what would you recommend me? Do you think is best to go to Bmw dealer and buy a brand new water coolant tank?

      Ahmed Saciid Hi,
I’m just curious what the cause of the problem was. Would you share that with us?
      Tx in advance!
I very much doubt that if you exchange any non-leaking part that that would have helpt. If there’s no leakage visible on the outside (did they use trace fluid?) than it must have leaked on the inside 😬. But you should have noticed that I think.

With how many common and *expensive* faults the 5 series has, it's probably not a bad idea to look at one with more miles/km on it with a rich service history with most common faults already fixed rather than getting a low miler and then paying thousands to fix the upcoming problems.

I was very pleased with my own 2011 520d Touring, which I had from 2013-2021. It had the sport automatic, the fantastic comfort seats and adaptive drive. Over my ownership, the main issues were broken front springs (a real hassle to replace due) and rear air springs (easy to replace). I went through a couple of sets of brake discs and pads front and rear, which is normal wear. I had to replace some electrical connectors to the electric handbrake actuator (which was because I removed it wrongly), but that was a small job. I also experienced water seeping in through the rear door inner linings (glue dries up), which apparently happens to a lot of these cars. But all in all, I had a lot of good motoring from this car, which did not once let me down over the course of nearly 8 years. And somewhat surprisingly, I found it relatively easy to work on it myself.

Bunch of double talk here. There is only ONE WAY to buy a BMW: You find one that just got off the 3 year or 4 year lease, buy it for half what it cost new, and make sure it has the factory extended warranty for 6 years or 100,000 miles. When the warranty starts to expire you get rid of it and get another.......FUN DRIVING, LOW COST, and while plenty of repair bills, BMW pays for them not you! Buying a German car without warranty is a bad idea....the lesson will be very costly..........end of story......

Dante I. BMW are very hard to work because you have to strip away a lot of stuff to gain access to the gasket or hose to replace. Plus the way the fittings are position you need specialized tools to take them off. A normal valve gasket leak takes 2 hours on a Japanese brand, on the BMW N55 engine same job takes 9-12 hours to do!

Nice review and very accurate. I have a 5 year old F11 with 90k miles on it. It’s a brilliant car, but multimedia system crashes every few hours when it’s cold, and I have had to replace the air suspension bags (the latter I did myself with Arnott replacements for £300). Apart from that I’ve had a coolant leak (£100 fix from an independent). Changed to normal tyres as run flats are rubbish. Apart from that I love it, very comfortable, quiet and even my 520d has some grunt left when fully loaded with adults, luggage and a bike rack. Just don’t assume that you have to get it serviced by BMW, as they are ridiculously expensive, and will always in my experience, try to charge you to replace half worn parts early- seriously oil, filters and brakes are an easy job at home, and use an independent for nearly everything else!

My only real disappointment is with paint blistering on the original 17 inch rims (236 style). I’ve owned an early production (2010) model year 2011 535xi for nearly 8 years. The car has 99k miles and has been free of problems save one that I believe is common. The trunk release goes out on a lot of these cars leaving you w/o access. In my case the car was rear ended literally the day after failing and was repaired as a part of sheet metal repair. The run flat tires on the car are a disaster. They bend rims AND they are worthless when flat...I know. A friend sold these cars (BMW) for 7 years saying the tires were the most common complaint and that factory reps ignored concerns saying they were here to stay. All that said it has been a very comfortable and well performing car. Hope this helps if you’re considering one.

Not a detailed assessment. The weak spot of the F10 reliability are suspension components and its ability to warp brake discs pretty easily. Also there was an engine upgrade to the 530d which improved performance to 258 bhp and emissions/economy from the 2012 model year.

DO NOT BUY A USED BMW. BMW's are truly a nightmare! There is absolutely nothing on these vehicles that simple to repair. Parts are very expensive and most repairs require an expensive professional mechanic. Moreover, these vehicle drastically depreciate within 10 years. To change an upper radiator hose on most high performance vehicles is a 15-minute job. This is not the case with BMWs. Most of the cooling system is made of plastic. Hell, half of the car is made of plastic. The radiator hoses are made with plastic couplings that are held on with clips. These hoses are very difficult to remove after being ran a number of years going through numerous heat cycles. The engineers BMW and all of their wisdom, designed the upper portion of the radiator that is also made also of plastic. It's virtually impossible to remove the upper hose without cracking the plastic housing on the radiator. I'm a professional mechanic and I know how to remove a component without force. But in this instance it's unavoidable unless you're very lucky. The entire undercarriage and exhaust system must be removed just to change and u-joint. To replace a starter, (or even see it for that matter) you need to basically remove the entire upper portion of the engine compartment. And I won't even get into the friquent issues with faulty sensors, relays, maf, etc. The interiors are plastic crap. The headliners fall. I've seen multiple issues with the electronics harnesses shorting out and catching fire. I could go on. After working on several of these vehicles, I would strongly advise that you avoid buying any used BMW. I am posting this comment in hopes that I can prevent others from experiencing these costly lessons. If you choose to ignore my warning then you should buy a used BMW and learn your lesson the hard way.

They are not too bad if you go for the SE spec with very little gadgets to go wrong. They are actually fairly easy to work on doing small repairs. My 520d needed an engine rebuild as the chain snapped and new shocks all round, headlight module failed (common issue) and I flooded my I drive controller so a used replacement went in (no need to recode it as ive been told on forums) That isn't the worst considering it was already 6 years old when I bought it.

  • @ardiblumkvist3762
    @ardiblumkvist3762 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

You missed one very important part. Cars with 250 000...300 000km will have a high pressure fuel pump failure (the rate is very high). This causes injectors to fail. The fuel pump will start dispersing small aluminum pieces around the fuel system. This means that you have to replace the whole system - fuel tank, high pressure fuel pump, all the pipes and injectors. Very costly. Better replace HPFP between 200k...250k km. This is a serious issue of new Audis, BMW, VW, Volvo and so on. It's because they all use similar Bosch pile of crap which will eventually fail. Google and see for yourself ;)

The 3.0 diesels also suffer the chain issue. The headlight modules also fuck up fairly often. Manual gearboxes sometimes won't go in to reverse. Dualmass flywheels wear out fast too.

ishkhan tanyelian timing chain will break at 100k so prepare $2000-3000 to replace it as early as possible the timing chain issue is very problematic and the timing chain guides are made of plastic so replace it as soon as you hit 100k as a preventive maintenance

Just one point, I'd at least check the fluid level in the transmission.

Thanks for the timing chain update. This killed my last 520d 2010 model. Might consider a 2016 model again.

When i got my BMW 2011 353i in 2012 (preowned with 12k miles) everyone warned me maintenance would be expensive.... to be "fair" a majority of the. family don't touch their cars instead mechanics handle it.... but I've maintained my baby and it's running smoothly.
(i mean ive done most of the work myself and oil was the major saver $40 to 50 bucks for the oil and filter DYI vs +$150 at the dealer (think average was $180

I don't know why, for some reasons, I read a lot of bad things about BMW. I mean, a lot. And I don't know why. Don't get me wrong, these are extremely beautiful cars. I simply love the look. I would buy one if I had enough money.

I have 2011sept 520 diesel and i had to change the engine at 170Tkm because of many injectors were defect. There was no warning from board computer. I let check by BMW garage whether timing chain should be replaced, it costs 140€ and they gave me the car back and have not indicated the vibrations which was not normal. They are not so qualified. The truth is that Injectors should be tested every 100Tkm.
