      different car review hi, I’ve got a problem with my Bmw f10 2012 model, basically every other day I have to refill up the water coolant tank and is something I never used to do before, so I went to the garage to get it checked and they said that there isn’t any Water leaking sign through the pipes or anything like that so they told me to just to change the water coolant tank, so I’ve changed the water coolant tank but bear in mind it wasent a brand new I bought it of another Bmw the same model as mine which means it was used, and I didn’t think that would cause any problems but still I’m still having the same problem, what would you recommend me? Do you think is best to go to Bmw dealer and buy a brand new water coolant tank?

      Ahmed Saciid Hi,
      I’m just curious what the cause of the problem was. Would you share that with us?
      Tx in advance!
      I very much doubt that if you exchange any non-leaking part that that would have helpt. If there’s no leakage visible on the outside (did they use trace fluid?) than it must have leaked on the inside 😬. But you should have noticed that I think.

    With how many common and *expensive* faults the 5 series has, it's probably not a bad idea to look at one with more miles/km on it with a rich service history with most common faults already fixed rather than getting a low miler and then paying thousands to fix the upcoming problems.

    I was very pleased with my own 2011 520d Touring, which I had from 2013-2021. It had the sport automatic, the fantastic comfort seats and adaptive drive. Over my ownership, the main issues were broken front springs (a real hassle to replace due) and rear air springs (easy to replace). I went through a couple of sets of brake discs and pads front and rear, which is normal wear. I had to replace some electrical connectors to the electric handbrake actuator (which was because I removed it wrongly), but that was a small job. I also experienced water seeping in through the rear door inner linings (glue dries up), which apparently happens to a lot of these cars. But all in all, I had a lot of good motoring from this car, which did not once let me down over the course of nearly 8 years. And somewhat surprisingly, I found it relatively easy to work on it myself.

    Nice review and very accurate. I have a 5 year old F11 with 90k miles on it. It’s a brilliant car, but multimedia system crashes every few hours when it’s cold, and I have had to replace the air suspension bags (the latter I did myself with Arnott replacements for £300). Apart from that I’ve had a coolant leak (£100 fix from an independent). Changed to normal tyres as run flats are rubbish. Apart from that I love it, very comfortable, quiet and even my 520d has some grunt left when fully loaded with adults, luggage and a bike rack. Just don’t assume that you have to get it serviced by BMW, as they are ridiculously expensive, and will always in my experience, try to charge you to replace half worn parts early- seriously oil, filters and brakes are an easy job at home, and use an independent for nearly everything else!

    Bunch of double talk here. There is only ONE WAY to buy a BMW: You find one that just got off the 3 year or 4 year lease, buy it for half what it cost new, and make sure it has the factory extended warranty for 6 years or 100,000 miles. When the warranty starts to expire you get rid of it and get another.......FUN DRIVING, LOW COST, and while plenty of repair bills, BMW pays for them not you! Buying a German car without warranty is a bad idea....the lesson will be very costly..........end of story......

      Dante I. BMW are very hard to work because you have to strip away a lot of stuff to gain access to the gasket or hose to replace. Plus the way the fittings are position you need specialized tools to take them off. A normal valve gasket leak takes 2 hours on a Japanese brand, on the BMW N55 engine same job takes 9-12 hours to do!

    I have a 2011 550i (M sport) 6 speed manual. In silver, like in your video @ 6:18. With custom exhaust and a few other goodies, including Dinan stage 2. The engine was making a ticking sound and the BMW dealer said I needed a new engine, there was metal shavings in the oil pan. With these expensive cars (BMWs) get the warranty. I have a brand new engine, 4.4L shipped from Germany and installed by BMW dealer in NY. The warranty covered almost $18k for engine/parts and labor. I have just over 40,000 miles on the chassis/body, the car looks brand new. No other problems or complains. Over a thousand miles on the new engine now and she purrs like a lion. ...It's true (as per video), early models had fuel injector problems. No other problems or complains so far. The platinum warranty is a MUST! in my opinion and a peace of mind.

    • @OverSoft
      @OverSoft 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, the 50i engine (N63 engine) (especially before the LCI update) is a unreliable piece of crap, most early F10's already have a replacement engine and they still crap out on occasion. In the US they had a recall (but they didn't call it that, they called it the "customer care package" to avoid bad press), but in the rest of the world, you're basically screwed if anything goes wrong on the engine.
      If you're in the market for a 550i, definitely avoid all pre-2014 F10's and make sure it has an N63TU engine (which is the updated one). Otherwise, go for a 35i or an M5 (which second hand might cost only 20% more than the 50i).

    I’ve owned an early production (2010) model year 2011 535xi for nearly 8 years. The car has 99k miles and has been free of problems save one that I believe is common. The trunk release goes out on a lot of these cars leaving you w/o access. In my case the car was rear ended literally the day after failing and was repaired as a part of sheet metal repair. The run flat tires on the car are a disaster. They bend rims AND they are worthless when flat...I know. A friend sold these cars (BMW) for 7 years saying the tires were the most common complaint and that factory reps ignored concerns saying they were here to stay. All that said it has been a very comfortable and well performing car. Hope this helps if you’re considering one.

      I have 17” on my E60. Drives excellent with run flats. However on normal tires at high speed (150km/h 90M/h) the becomes unstable. My tyrecenter confirmed that the car really needs run flats.

    My 2011 F11 520d has really only had a technical problem with both rear suspension bellows. Both were changed under warranty, however. My only real disappointment is with paint blistering on the original 17 inch rims (236 style). They have been used as winter wheels and clearly cannot take road salt, even though they have been regularly washed and waxed. I am now changing them for original 327 style wheels.

    I replaced the OEM continental contiprocontact run flat tires that came with my 528 F10 with BridgestonePOTENZA RE960AS POLE POSITION RFT and not only did the harsh ride quality of the continentals go away, but also the car's straight line traction and handling improved greatly. Try these bridgestone tire if you want to improve your ride quality while not sacrificing the convenience of having run flats on your car. I will not recommend the Bridgestone driveguard run flat tires however. I found that, while it provided improved ride comfort, it had little to no road feedback for the car.

    I have no coolant or oil leaks, but one can hear a wushing sound from the timing chain at 1500 rpm - bmw service told me it is not a big deal.

    I had a 2016 518d estate automatic on lease from a BMW dealer in Arras, France. I did not buy it when the lease ended as BMW simply wanted too much money for it. I specified comfort seats and they were not very comfortable. They lacked padding and the leather was hard. The standard seats are better The ride quality without Adaptive Suspension was harsh at slow speeds. I had 225/55 17 tyres, but lower profile tyres would make small bumps and road noise even more noticeable.
    I had problems with the coolant level dropping. This was an internal leak caused by the EGR valve and was subject to a worldwide recall. BMW France failed to notify me of this problem and recall, and I had to have the EGR valve replaced at Chandlers BMW at Hailsham, UK. It was also required that the EGR cooler be replaced as well as part of the recall. Once again BMW France failed to notify me of this recall. Problems with the EGR cooler could cause the car to catch fire. Good luck to the next owner!
    In the 90,000 kms I drove my car over three years I found it to be very fuel efficient, averaging between 40 to 48 miles per gallon on long distance driving. The 518d was very kind to tyres which lasted well and wore evenly. The 8 speed gearbox changed smoothly most of the time, but would get caught out at low speeds as it hesitated to select the right gear. On autoroutes and motorways the 5 series was tiring to drive as you constantly had to correct the steering to keep the car straight. The steering was dead and lifeless especially on long stretches of motorway, you couldn't relax for a moment in case the car drifted out of the lane.
    The main problem owning a BMW is the cost of servicing and repairs. €760 for the 2nd service is way too much. I knew if I kept my BMW I would have to put new front discs and pads on it, and maybe the rears too. The air suspension on the estate versions like mine will eventually require the air bags to be changed and that is around €900 each side at a French BMW dealer. Also I started to lose coolant again which was probably due to the new EGR valve now leaking.
    Be aware that the bonnet, front wings and doors are all made of aluminium on the F10/11 and are more vulnerable to denting plus harder to repair than steel
    I now own a Renault Talisman Initiale Paris edc 160 estate. It is loaded with features which would cost extra on a 5 series and it is more comfortable with abetter ride quality. In my opinion the Talisman is a superior car for the money.

    Not a detailed assessment. The weak spot of the F10 reliability are suspension components and its ability to warp brake discs pretty easily. Also there was an engine upgrade to the 530d which improved performance to 258 bhp and emissions/economy from the 2012 model year.

Do this ASAP because otherwise you will put too much pressure on your air suspension compressor and it will wear prematurely! Air bag replacement = cheap, air compressor replacement = expensive. Watch out for the oil filter housing gasket around 40k, and water pump every 60k (overheating indicators when temp is normal is your hint). If your A/C stops blowing cold, replace the blower motor and blower regulator. Also, leaks in rear window seals and headlights are a constant frustration. Don't be afraid to ditch the run-flat tires-you won't regret it! The ride is much smoother without them, cheaper too! Some mechanical inclination will go a long way in saving you money with this car. I have 2011sept 520 diesel and i had to change the engine at 170Tkm because of many injectors were defect. There was no warning from board computer. I let check by BMW garage whether timing chain should be replaced, it costs 140€ and they gave me the car back and have not indicated the vibrations which was not normal. They are not so qualified. The truth is that Injectors should be tested every 100Tkm.

    based on the video, the 520d 2011 is a good choice, but is it better to buy a 2014 facelifted version instead or are they about equaly reliable? (considering the pre-facelift have the n47 engine)

    • @matasz8106
      @matasz8106 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      fl model is much more reliable as bmw fixed the early production problems and improved it in various aspects. If you can afford the facelift why not go for it and even ask it? If you cant, you cant. Even the pre fl is good enough

      @@matasz8106 i can afford a pre-fl with the equippment i want and there is a lot on the marked. The fl version is not that much more expensive,but if most problems like the timingchain is fixed after 2011, i’d rather but a pre-fl 520d.

    You missed one very important part. Cars with 250 000...300 000km will have a high pressure fuel pump failure (the rate is very high). This causes injectors to fail. The fuel pump will start dispersing small aluminum pieces around the fuel system. This means that you have to replace the whole system - fuel tank, high pressure fuel pump, all the pipes and injectors. Very costly. Better replace HPFP between 200k...250k km. This is a serious issue of new Audis, BMW, VW, Volvo and so on. It's because they all use similar Bosch pile of crap which will eventually fail. Google and see for yourself ;)

      what happen? N55 should be way more reliable compared to n54. Still gets common oil leaks for valve cover, and oil housing.
