Did You Know This About The Time Turners In HARRY POTTER…

  • Hermione had the only time turner at Hogwarts! Unfortunately for JK Rowling, it opened up a can of worms for her, as it would be difficult to write future plots if wizards could just travel back in time and undo their mistakes. In fact, she admitted going far too light-heartedly into the subject of time travel in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. That’s why she had all remaining Time-Turners smashed during the battle in the Department of Mysteries, removing the possibility of reliving even short periods in the future. If this hadn't been the case, we would have had a very different story!

      It's a paradoxical event, like what they did in the movie, it's impossible for them to meet since it'll create a paradox and would wipe out both existence creating a loop that does this until one would realize what they've been doing and or the turner breaks.
      I also think there's an explanation as to why Time travel isn't heavily used since this could have had major changes to the story seeing as it could have had Harry (present) be the reason why Voldemort missed or he could have killed Voldemort while he the mad man was confronting Lily.
      Still, I don't think the possible reason why is because no one can go farther than an hour or two back, the reason why Harry and Hermione we're able to could be drawn to Harry being more sensitive to Magical energy allowing his presence to be a fueling force for the turner and moving them back further which would have killed a normal wizard or so I think.
      Unfortunately, all these are my opinion, except the first part since it delves into the understanding of how plausible Time travel works and how it differs from Timeline jumping.

      I heard a theory once of someone that said that time turners worked as a self contained paradox where you can only go back in time if you noticed the changes that your future self would make to the timeline, like hermione throwing the rock at Harry and taking Buckbeak (Remember that the angle used in the movie didn´t show buckbeak being kill and in the time travel part you see that the cutted thing was a pumpking), the howling and the patronus, so under this logic you couldn´t use it for everything, of course, Cursed Child came to ruin that very good theory.

      *inhale* There are cases in the lore (before cursed child too, which nobody counts) of wizards who accidentally erased themselves or events from history by messing with time. It's why wizards who aren't licensed by the ministry are forbidden to use time turners, the consequences of altering events are unpredictable. The exception seems to be when you already know the outcome, as Dumbledore did when he told Hermione and Harry what to do as he had already witnessed Buckbeak being freed. *exhale*

    Dumbledore clearly states they must not encounter their past selves showing a wizard couldn't fix their mistakes. Second off, Time Turners create a causality loop as shown by Harry and Hermione throwing the snail shells at themselves, Hermione howling to lure Lupin away, and Harry conjuring his Patronus. Harry literally states when he conjured his fully realized Patronus, he knew he could do it because he had already done it and realized nobody else was at the location when the Patronus appeared. They become the explanation for events they had already experienced. The timeline remains intact via the Novikov self-consistency principle in handling paradoxes regarding time travel. Buckbeak was never killed; they assumed he was given the circumstances but did not personally view it. Lupin's distraction was assumed to be caused by an unseen wolf. The snails hitting them came from behind cover and they didn't move to investigate. Sirius needed to be saved because he had already been saved by that point.

    It also could've been easily explained had they said something about the three hour jump in the climax being extremely risky or something. Up until then, Hermione had only been jumping by an hour at a time to get to every class. But she and Harry needed to go back three hours at once to save Sirius. Rowling could've had Hermione mention how dangerous it is to go back further than an hour at a time in order to explain why using the time turner wouldn't be a very good 'fix-it' method for important events.
    They also could've said that time turners are heavily regulated, like how underage wizards have a trace. Hermione got special permission to use one for her classes because McGonanagall set it up for her. There could have been some regulation from the Ministry that lets them track or even control when and where they're being used. Perhaps Dumbledore could have done some trickery to allow Hermione and Harry to take one untracked trip.
    Hell, even just saying they're incredibly rare and tricky would have sufficed, seeing how they get away with not just having everyone brew Felix Felicis due to how difficult it is to make and disastrous to get wrong.

  • @nordern1
    @nordern1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's sad that she didn't realize that they didn't actually break anything, because they didn't actually allow you to change anything. They were just twice at the same time in different places with hindsight. But there wasn't some first time where Harry and Sirius dies at the lake, it's both happening at once. So if you tried to use a time turner to fix prevent something from happening, you would obviously fail, because it already happened.

    People don’t seem to get that timeturners can’t actually change events in time but only create closed loops in time instead. I get that their existence raises the question why there aren’t more loops like this present in the series but I think Rowling was smart by letting the timeturners be rare and heavily regulated by the ministry.

      tbh it felt cheap. it felt like she didnt plan it out and as soon as a huge plot hole came up she decided to take the easy way out by having them all conveniently destroyed so only the good guys could use it. if she just didnt put them in the books in the first place it would have been better than trying to fill all her plot holes

    • @thomasjeppesen3055
      @thomasjeppesen3055 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@namixless9732 where do you see a plothole? As I wrote Timeturners can’t actually change the past, only create a closed loop that allows a person to be in more than one place at the time. Rowling could simply have decided to never mention them again in the series and it would have been fine because their limitations and rarity were already well established in Prisoner of Azkaban and it wouldn’t have been if they were never used again since there really wasn’t any other events in the books where a timeturner could have been used to save the day - aside from maybe someone going back in time to secretly observe the person who put Harry’s name in the goblet of Fire.
      So I think it was a good touch of Rowling to actually find a logical way to remove them from the series.

      @@thomasjeppesen3055 the loops itself change stuff tho.
      For example in the 3 book if they did not go back in time, amongs other things Harry would be soulsucked by the dementors, but him going back there allowed him to save himself, therefor changing events that would otherwise happen.
      You are kinda right that the timeturner cannot change what did actualy happen, but it has the power to let this thing not happen in the first place.
      For example if i ride my bike and drive into a tree the time turner cannot change this, but if i ride my bike and get stopped by someone therfore im not driving into the tree just to then travel back in time to stopp myself, that would be possible.
      By the way this closed loop ides is problematic in the sense that you can create stuff and abilitys inside this loop without restrictions (essentialy) and keep them ones you get out of the loop, proven by Harry´s increased abilitie to controll the patronus.
      Lastly based on what is shown in the books the timeturners are basicly not restricted atall and not monitored whatsoever either.
      the monitoring part is proven since H&H comite high crimes using this device but not get punished whatsoever, and the first thing is more or less implied since they give this most powerfull of all the magical items to a 13-Year old Child. Sure this child might(or might not ) be a prodigy but let me remind you that they didn´t even had a final test the year befor her getting this and she isn´t even that good in all her subjekts. And even if, you or better said the ministery of evry nation would never give a 13 year old the equivalent of a nuke just because she is good in school.

    • @thomasjeppesen3055
      @thomasjeppesen3055 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@1stmorgoth289 the loops are fixed in time. If the loop has already happened natural events will always lead to the people creating it going back in time. Harry and Hermione wasn’t aware they had already gone back in time when they were in the hospital wing and so they did it without any precautions about the matter.
      It’s just an eternal loop in time that will keep reinforcing itself because there is no factor that can potentially interfere with the moment.
      I don’t see the problem with that because it allows no opportunity for people to actually change stuff. Really, you shouldn’t really think about timeturners as a time machine but more like a tool that can create a clone of yourself with foresight over the events that will happen in the next couple of hours.

    • @1stmorgoth289

      @@thomasjeppesen3055 ONe example that is absolutly possible to achieve with the use of a time turner:

      I therefore do so, meaning i use the turner to give me the bag and then go on using the passwort i just recieved.
      In Harry´s case it could also be:
      Here is the sword of Gryfendor use it to destroy this neglace and then travel back in time to give it to yourself, for destroying the neglace.
      Sure the Physical thing you send back in time stays in the Loop, but while in this Loop you can do stuff with it and nonphysical things such as information, can even leave this Loop.
      *"with foresight over the events that will happen in the next couple of hours."*
      Yes with foresight over the things that will happen, but this things might have alreadyy been altered by you traveling back in time.

Buckbeek wasn't killed he got away and the executioner killed a pumpkin instead xD harry thought he saw someone who looked like his dad only to figure out it was his time double. changing time drastically different may not have been possible. its a closed loop it was always going to happen as it did. so nothing actually changes.

    I would also like to think it is down to how time travel is written in Harry Potter (my personal favourite form of it)
    You don't create a new timeline, when you travel back, you had always traveled back and you were always going to do what happened.

      Also fun fact: she got a lot (if not all) of her dates wrong in the book like she’d give a date, say it happened on a Friday when it was actually on a Monday. 1 example of this is Valentine’s Day in Chamber of Secrets. They had classes that the dwarves giving out the valentines were interrupting. The problem with this? February 14, 1993 was on a Sunday. There should have been no classes to interrupt. Also in the 1st book the beginning of the story takes place on a "dull, grey Tuesday." But in 1981, 1 November was on a Sunday.

Although it does cause some weird paradoxes where you HAVE to use the time turner or the present will change because future you wasn't in the past to make things work out exactly how they did.
    ex: If Harry and Hermione don't decide to use the time tuner in PoA, no one is there to throw the rock at Hagrid's hut, Buckbeak isn't saved, and Harry isnt there to conjure a Patronus.

    I personally think that Time travel in this movie is the best way to use it. You can't change the past, you can only confirm the future.
    I think any other form of time travel aside for Endgame brings in too many questions. Like if I were to change the past and ensure that I never did something stupid and broke my leg. I go back, do a thing, change the past, now I've never broken my leg. But now I've also never had the desire to go back and stop myself from breaking my leg. I'd never stop myself, hense breaking my leg all over again. Now I want to stop myself from breaking my leg. Do you see where I'm going with this?
    My point is that time travel is way too easy to break unless there are rules

    Question is what is the orginal time line what actually happens to Harry if Harry isn’t there to save himself

  • @anthonycory2116
    @anthonycory2116 ปีที่แล้ว

    It was actually only three time turners and all of existence it said so in the books.
    Also the Time turners had a very big limitation as it couldn't go further back than 24 hours.
    So let's say a villain who failed at a task decided that they wanted to go back and fix it Not only would they have to figure out a way to break into the ministry to steal one they would have to do it before they made their mistakes so it would have to be a safeguard Not a fix because there's no way they're going to be able to break into the ministry and steal the time turner within 24 hours of a previously made mistake
    Let's just assume that they do get a hold of the time Turner before whatever task they're trying to complete to ensure that it goes perfectly. The disarming spell expelliarmus disarms anything that a person can be holding so by the time the other person is able to pull out the time turner in the middle of a fight to reset time another wizard there could already be ready to disarm.
    Not to mention if the person becomes captured or killed the time turner will be confiscated anyways so it's not the end-all be-all fixed to everything
    Now if there was an actual spell that someone could use to go back in time, then we might have a problem because even if you confiscate their wand they can always get another wand but if you're able to keep them separated from the time turner for 24 hours then time is set and there's nothing else they can do

  • @shinra6913

    they also had the side effect of aging you as you came forward in time. so travel back 1 year then back to the original time you would age 1 year for the return trip. meaning if cursed child had even the slightest bit of consistency with the main books harry would be over 100 years old and albus potter would be in his 80's

    Honestly though it makes sense why wizards can't go back in time to change the past bc it already has happened in the present before they go back in time
    I feel like instead of destroying all timeturners it would make sense if a character tried to change events from the past that we know didn't happen but they are stopped by an unseeable force or something like that like in Alice through the looking glass movie where she can't change the past because anything she does in the past just triggers the same events

    My problem with this is that they weren't even operating one the specific rules of time travel that would allow for that... the rules they used basically said that anything that happened had to have already happened. If the traveler takes any action, then that action will be perceived as if it had always happened. You can't change the past using the time turner, you can only take part in it.

And the person going back in time would only be able to return to their timeline by actually living the timeline. And even then, it wouldn't be the same life they return to.

  • @phoenixmason4101
    @phoenixmason4101 ปีที่แล้ว

    She didn’t actually have to do this. The way it’s presented in PoA, everything that you do after going back in time has already happened. Harry and Hermione were already in the past on the first go through that timeline, so they didn’t actually change anything. Buckbeak had been saved already, even though the past trio wasn’t there to witness it, and future Harry had already saved himself and Sirius with the patronus, though past Harry thought it was his dad

  • @Misora7303
    @Misora7303 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think she overcompensated, personally.
    In POA, the Time Turners work in a closed loop, there is no fixing your mistakes, they were always fixed.
    They effectively act as temporary clones that you control in retrospect. Dumbledore knew future Harry and Hermione were using the Time Turner long before he ever suggested it, and it's that prior knowledge that makes using them even possible. Go back to try to undo things and you're just not going to succeed, because you already failed. Hermione always makes it to class because while sitting one, she knows she'll eventually use the Time Turner to sit another. My biggest gripe with them is Hermiones complete lack of due care when moving between states.
    There is no timelines where Buckbeak dies. The inciting incident is his disappearance, which was always caused by events in the future. When you understand that, you realise liquid luck has roughly the same outcome, and is in fact probably a bit more effective cause it requires less planning.

    Time travel is powerful, but it's not so bad. They can't change what's already happened, as you can see in prizoner of azkaban. If they make a mistake or someone dies, it's permanent. Really what the time turner allows for, is for the characters to be in multiple places at once. How you can utilize that to great effect is a lot more difficult than simply changing the course of history which they can't.

  • @1stmorgoth289
    @1stmorgoth289 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    based on how the time turner work in this univers "destroying" them is not possible.
    Since its absolutly possible that your future self goes back in time and gives you 5 timeturners so that you can go back in time to give them to yourself and suddenly there are timeturners again in this world.
    Its cool if she knows it now but the pure existens of the timeturners destroys basicly evry tension this story could have.
    Since you can safe yourself with this devices evryone that dies, did infact only die because they did not bother to save themself. So noone dies witth regret in this world, wich is kind of nice.

Someone will save Harry from the Death Eaters. And Harry's parents will stay dead. What is set to happen will happen and the time turners may only act as vessels for these set events to transpire.

  • @ZackofSpades

    Time Turners, and Prophecies, are two great examples of how Harry Potter is in a fixed-fate timeline. Any attempts to change or alter the past, or the future, are already factored into the timeline, and all actions are preordained.

  • @ThatPancakeCat
    @ThatPancakeCat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's never really explained how the time travel works anyway.
    In the prisoner of azkaban we see them going back to make it so what happened in the past actually happen. Which makes sense, that's the most realistic way that time travel would work yet most time travel movies don't do it because it's boring and doesn't involve stakes around movies that revolve entirely around the premise.
    They get it pretty spot on in the movie and I absolutely love the scene.
    However, in the cursed child we see a plot revolve around being able to change the past. Which they can then just return to somehow when they mess up a timeline which is the stupidest bullshit ever when you think about it for too long.

    Actually, not even JK understood how she wrote time travels in her books. It's impossible to change the past and undo mistakes using time turners, because the past has already happened. For example, buckbeak never died, because Harry and Hermione saved him, after traveling to the past. All of your actions when you are in the past are already predetermined in order to make the present you are from. So no, a wizard can't fiz his mistakes by time traveling because if his mistake have happened already, he will never be able to change it, or he will give up on changing it, or even his attempt at changing it could be the triggrer that made it happen in first place.
