I really think that Sleep Token's songs and lyrics are a path of healing. At least, for me, it is. Vessel has the ability to speak to your soul. There's a interview with him, the only one that ever happened, way back in 2017, I guess...he said that their identities aren't important, they choose to remain anonymous because the focus is the music, the message. I think your reaction is one of the reasons for the mask: So that Vessel can not only create this sort of message and music that has such impact without ego or shame, but that he can also perform it and allow himself to be vulnerable without personal judgement. What often prevents many of us from showing our true selves to others is the fear of exposure and ridicule. Wearing the mask negates that, in a way. It's apparent he does consistently access raw emotion to perform live, and like you say - sometimes the cup runneth over and he's not afraid to slosh it all over the stage. Their "Bloodsport - From the Room Below" official mv is a good example of that direct link between content and performance. Not only are his lyrics and music top tier, the performance (and drumming, don't forget ii, iii and iv) shoot their music over the top into next level. Hit or a miss for some, but as a whole, it transcends.

The lyrics on this one definitely take center stage; the music is relaxed and straight-forward (simple song structure, no unexpected time/genre changes)...and i guess that's why it doesn't resonate with everyone (similar to The Way That You Were and Fall For Me). Like another commenter said, "Vessel has the ability to speak to your soul." Not all songs will speak to everyone, but sometimes, his lyrics just sneak up on you and wreck your day. ^ ^ For me, the soul crushing song from them is High Water.
Funny thing about the Singer, Vessel. Even when you know who he is, he's still nobody, no one you could possibly know unless you're a friend or family member of his. He's not somebody famous, and that's also what's important in a way. Because without the Vessel persona, he himself probably wouldn't say he's somebody special. Same goes for every other member of the band actually, they're not famous in any way.
