I wholeheartedly agree with you and with your music analogy. This is exactly the point even when it comes to the time you need to learn a language. You can't think you can learn to play the guitar in a couple of months, can you? So why do people still believe they can learn English in no time?

I strongly believe that it’s important to study grammar. But, if want to be a professional teacher we must do it.

I think this ist a very interesting topic. Back in school I was forced to learn English grammar because English is the first foreign language in Germany. To bei honest I hated it and I thought I was too stupid to learn it. Later I started learning English again and taught myself most of it but grammar remained largely a mystery to me. I learned from books, films and series but I have to admit that a lot of things are easier for me now that I understand the grammar better.
I learned it from Ben's latest grammar Video "Essential Grammar Course"
I can only speak for myself here, but it's the first time in my life that I understand the grammar and even enjoy it.
For everyone out there who has the same problem as me and ist studying for an exam or just enjoys the English language, get this course, IT`S WORTH IT...

Hi Ben! I have been watching your videos for months while preparing for the CAE exam, and they have proven to be incredibly useful! I just got my results - a 206 score 😮- and I wanted to tell you how grateful I am for the awesome content you share with us ❤

I agree with you. No matter what amount of vocabulary you know, it is pointless if you can’t put words in the correct order or know how to use them. Studying grammar takes one to the next level in no time, it is a "cheat code" 😅

I was learning English for many years at the end on very high level… and it was too much. I can remember one moment, when I was starting at page with exercises and I was wondering if it’s a dream, because I literally couldn’t understand what am I looking at. I was unable to learn anything new, my mind was like „Im done, I don’t care, f**k off”.
Of course it is my fault, that I choose school like that (I had extended English, but also extended biology and chemistry)😆
Now when I speak English it takes me a while to start speaking fluently, because in my mind there is always „grammar, grammar, GRAMMAR”. And all the time I feel confused, because I’m sure that my grammar is so bad, that I’m committing a crime against the English language.

    Dear Ben,
tomorrow marks the final day. After countless of months spend studying the exam, i will finally be done with it all tomorrow. However, I must convey my appreciation for your videos. You are a genuine man, trying to help out students in their everyday struggle. Moreover, not matter how scared I was, your calm and relaxing manner has always put my mind at ease. By all means, please continue doing these videos ! You are a great influence on the world, honestly of higher value than most politicans :_: With this is i bid farewell to your videos. Hello Ben! I think most of people who are learning English are not keen on studying grammar, however as you said , it is essential to expanding vocabulary and also to know how the language works. To play any musical instrument is necessary dedication and so is learning English. I am used to saying to my students that playing 'Stairway to Heaven' from Led Zeppelin with perfection is like achieve the paramount when you are learning English.

Excellent video, explained in such a clever and interesting way. I agree 100% with what you said and, like you, I learnt virtually no grammar at school. Before I became a teacher, all I knew was that a verb was a "doing word". This puts us at a disadvantage when learning a foreign language and may partially explain the high number of monolinguists in Britain. If you start a second channel teaching guitar I'll be the first to subscribe.

Thanks, Gideon. Interesting point about how we're at a disadvantage when learning a foreign language. It's true that I learnt a lot about English grammar from learning Spanish.
I'll let you know if I start a channel teaching guitar 😃

Hello, I am always used to saying that grammar is the skeleton of a language and all the other features are the meat!😅 But yes, we need all these aspects when it comes to learn a news language, even our mother tongue because languages are tools which we all use in order to live and have experiences and emotions. Yeah, I've been guilty of studying it too much until the recent past but, now I have changed my levels of % of my skills when I study. I complain usually 😢but it's only on me now changing the past mistakes in new good habits. I try to speak more in different condition, with myself, native and non native but it's very difficult to find people. Thank you! 🙏

Although we are able to communicate before going to school, we learn basic grammar at home using the most common structures correctly. Problems appear when we need to use advanced grammar (past perfect, conditionals, even adverbs). We may be able to be understood, but there could be some misunderstandings from those mistakes. I do believe we need to study grammar when learning a second or third language to compare with our mother tongue and to understand why the structures need those words exactly or even in a determined order. We can learn advanced grammar the same way we learn basic grammar at home: by immersing ourselves in the target language.

Ok, so I fully realise that literally nobody has asked and it has nothing to do with the video, but I really need to vent this to strangers online, and I watched about 5 hours worth of Ben's videos to prepare for my C1 exam, so maybe I can get some meaningless condolences. I just got my results, and I have scored 199 points. If I had 200, I would have the C2 level. I have never been more sad and happy at the same time.

Jimi Hendrix visited Essaouira in late 60's. You could come here with your guitar for some busking, will nice to bring Gideon with you, I believe he is remarkable with his ukulele.
