I saw Shaq play in Boston, it was my only time getting a chance to see him. He threw down a dunk and the whole arena erupted. It was awesome to see a legend.
@@jorgecambra2193Yeah, after making over 150m in guaranteed NBA money and another 100m in endorsements before retirement, he definitely needed that 1.5 to deteriorate his body and career stats. You're a fool. 😂
or he could be just saying it in a way to express his point, he never gonna do that. We don't know. Before anybody dismiss this point, he never really give up 1.5m, otherwise he'd just say he gave that 1.5m back instead of say he suggested it.
When I quit college basketball there was a grieving period. It’s something you’ve done you’re whole life and suddenly it’s gone. No teammates, practice, games it’s tough on you mentally. I can’t imagine playing for 20+ years in the nba and it just being done one day.
I just play in the work league and req league. I quit when I was 52. I was grieving. It wasn’t even my main thing. I loved basketball and enjoyed the competition
Didn't need the money. And would make more doing less if he retired. Which he did. It wasn't money owed, it was 1.5 left on the 2nd year of the deal... he played the 1 season and retired.
JJ Redick is such a good interviewer I liked it so much when he was a pundit on ESPN. Always stayed objective and gave us an insight from a basketball player’s perspective.
I saw him play for Cleveland, trying to “win a ring for the king” on the elimination game he got 20 some points but the rest of the team didn’t show up. It was a shame, Shaq is a legend
@@fil4648for some reason, the way this comment is worded makes me feel like he might've been. remember, athletes are people like us, they have youtube accounts too.
@@fil4648Im not but I was semi pro football player for a couple of years before I turned 20 and even played in u16 international team for my country and now 5 years after that when I go to field and can barely do anything I used to be able to do because of my knee problems it just fucks me up mentally so even if he wasnt a pro he could still feel that
Boston loved Shaq immediately. That Rondo to Shaq lob was cherry on top. If that achilles injury aint happen that was an unbeatable starting 5 even w shaq at the end of a great career. Many wanted him back.
I really respect Shaq as a person. I'm a UK fan and didnt like him at all in the early 90's but to learn about his character after BB. Top notch, Top notch man.
I know shaq is mostly universally loved. But anyone that doesn’t like this guy just has something wrong with them how can you not love the big guy. Humble as anyone a killer on the court and the guy is funny as hell I friggin love The Big Diesel
I respect him as a player and the impact he had. But there has been some moments of him being very petty and insecure. His feud with Dwight Howard over being nicknamed Superman. And the recent Jokic remarks. As well as Phil Jackson asking Kobe to do less so Shaq felt like he was getting more done. He has also admitted he relied a bit too much on his natural gifts as opposed to sharpening his skills. So for me personally, cool dude and incredible talent but he gets a bit too much in his feels about certain things and lashes out negatively. Which makes me less of a fan.
What a great question, and even a better honest answer! This is why Shaq is loved, he's real! You'll always be the one Diesel! I saw him in person and it was almost not real how fast he was. Big and he moved like a point guard. Unreal
For y’all that don’t understand he still took the money! Yes, he told them to keep it but legally and contractually speaking they had to give it to him. So he still got the money lol.
This is why basketball was better back then. This mentality. Killer mentality. Hopefully it’s gonna come back. I like what I’m seeing from some teams out there
We still respected Shaq in Boston. He gave us memories and moments. People who stick around and give a show are still loved. We loved seeing him even if he wasn't exactly what may have been expected. It's like Blake was the last few years. You still love to see him on the team. He may be one of the last ones off the bench but he's still such a vital part.
If he stayed in shape he coulda averaged 15-8 in Boston.. but at that time it was the middle of the shooting big transition.. shaq had no chance to compete with that..
Shaq was Shaq anymore. The guy that showed up in the neighborhood to play basketball with the kids. The dude that called into radio station morning shows sending belly laughs across the country. The dude approachable in public making peoples day everywhere he went. Shaq is much bigger than current basketball skills. He touches lives around the world.
I get that, but i feel like that's why I love how Kobe gace it his all. Sure he felt like he failed at some critical series, but when he retired he could break it down and say he did everything he wanted to do. Shaq was so dominant but once it stopped being easy he sorta saw how he could have done more. That's hindsight
There’s grieving for fans, too. I started idolizing Shaq when I was around nine and remember viewing him as indestructible. Then, he started aging and I always thought, ‘he’s going to turn into Shaq again…’ I cried when I watched a game of his in Phoenix because I knew it was over. Love you Shaq!
The thing is that as our favorite athletes get old, we also get old. Following a career makes you reflect on your own mortality a bit. You also come to terms at some point that your life is a certain way, and whatever you accomplish, it eventually turns to dust with you and eventually you're completely forgotten. Before I leave anybody with a sense of existential dread, that doesn't mean life is meaningless. We live for our own satisfaction, for our friends and family, and every once in a while for a stranger, and for the 0.01% of us great enough to be athletes, the fans.

Hell, when I stopped playing basketball after 11 years because my heart wasn't in it anymore and I hated my new coach, those were sad times.. Must be awful for someone like Shaq.
Shaq may be sensitive as hell but if you give him some space and ask him with empathy and respect, he'll come out on his own and display utter humility.

Was that the game with the big paper faces of Garnett and Rondo in the audience? I was at that game
Shaq, you always be who you are.
