    After watching many UK gardening programs I have become a fan of salvias. Other than nemerosa, some Proven Winners selections, and the sad little unscented bedding salvias, I don’t see many salvias on offer here in the US. But I’ve learned that there are some hardy varieties that are native to the US, and ideal for the increasingly dry summers. I’ve added a couple to my garden this year, in addition to beginning a collection of non-hardy varieties that I overwinter in the small greenhouse that my husband built using old doors and windows. I found s. discolor at a local nursery last year and was smitten! The contrast between the silvery foliage and dark blooms is stunning! Hummingbirds love them as much as I do 😊

      Try Flowers by the Sea Nursery - they are salvia specialist here.

      Love them, but they sadly went out of business last year. Other ideas are Almost Eden Plants and Select Seeds. @@FLlife

    Another interesting and useful video. Leaves me thinking I should find a home for another salvia, maybe the Nutans variety?

    Thanks so much for the plant list and zones for the US - very helpful to help us find our favorite Salvias. I have a small collection incl. a native Florida Salvia creeper (I'm zone 10) - groundcover you can walk on - with tiny bright sky blue flowers. Nice scent too when you touch the leaves or walk on it. Can't wait to try Guanajuato and Salvia nutans maybe even Amethyst Lips. Great show and telldemo - thanks!

    I have a salvia I grew from seed last year that likes boggy soil. Salvia forsskaolei . It has huge leaves spreading to a meter across and will have blue flowers growing up to 50cm. It is growing by the creek that runs through my property. Thanks for more tips on salvias!

      Interesting. I grow the exact same one in gravel by my driveway. I should try it in a wet area.

    I have a fairly large collection here in Florida 9b. I’m going to search for nuetons and I’ve always struggles with nemerosa but I’m inspired to try again.

      I garden in FL zone 10a. Would love to know if there are any particular varieties in your collection that have done exceptionally well in our climate? Always interested in trying new things. :)

    • @FLlife
      @FLlife ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kayceevallozzi I’ve had super good luck with Armistad, Wendy’s wish, love and wishes, Black and blue, any of the proven winners Rockin series which will be the easiest to find. Also Mystic Spires is easy to find. All of these although they say they are either annual or perennial are evergreen and ever blooming for us! I usually cut one or two stems to the base periodically to keep them flushed out and full. I’m in Bradenton on the west coast. If you’re near, I’m happy to share some cuttings or garden tour. Happy gardening!

      @@FLlife Oh, thank you so much! Adding these to my plant wish list now. 😊 And thanks for the tips! I love the idea of cutting a stem or two down at a time to keep things fresh. Will give that a try! I’m in the Naples area, so not too far! So kind of you to share your garden. Will keep it in mind should I ever find myself in your neck of the woods.

    My several Salvia cardona always bloom beautifully, but splay open in the center. They are in full sun from 9- 2 in the Summer and are watered adequately for this plant. I am thinking that perhaps these Require(?) dividing every 2 years or so? Mine have been in the same spot for about 8 years.

    • @johannsgarden1199
      @johannsgarden1199 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe the soil is too rich, causing the stems to be more tender and less sturdy.

    I don’t know why, but Hot Lips is one of my favorite plants ever. Up there with peonies and roses and dahlias! 🤪😂🩷
