They paint one nail because one nail represents one person involved who brings more awareness, one person at a time. That could be why, just a guess though. Considering both he and his brother--and their siblings--were left to the wolves in Hollywood, this seems like a good guess. I'd bet they had their fair share of trauma growing up, at the hands of people in power.
