i'm a japanese. agreed. i don't wanna get annoyed by youtubers talking roud in the shinkansen, especially in green cars where you pay extra for comfort.
Not sure if you could tell from the episode, but our train car was nearly empty. And to be clear, phone conversations on Shinkansen are a violation of the guidelines/rules, but having conversations at a respectful volume is fine. We absolutely ensured that our voices weren't loud enough to interfere with the peace of fellow passengers.

But the fact is, as you have experienced, the noise level at super-high speeds is no less than that of regular trains. And you are not drunk and ranting, you are just having a normal conversation facing a camera at close range. As a general Japanese etiquette, eating and drinking are allowed in reserved seats on Shinkansen and limited express trains, and of course normal conversation is perfectly fine. Americans are often (not always and not all of course) but often bad at "reading the room". I see it here in Scandinavia too. We're pretty quiet in public and try not to bother anyone , especially on trains or other public transportation, so we can immediately hear when Americans are around because for some unknown reason they are very loud even when everyone else are quiet. It's an interesting phenomenon and I wonder why. I don't think they know they're being perceived as rude, and I genuinly don't think they mean to - hopefully. That being said I really like this content and they seem like a very positive and happy family not scared to try new things and they provide useful info :)

I enjoyed these videos so much . I was 16 years old I’m 1970 and travelled to Japan with my High School to visit The Worlds Fair in Osaka . It was my first flight overseas , landed in Tokyo in the early morning and waited for the Bullet Train . I will never forget watching that train arrive and sooo many people disembarking. This was a life changing trip , because I had that amazing experience and learned like your children that the world is shared by all of us and 99% of people are lovely I have been able to easily travel to many different countries taking in the wonders the world has to offer . Try to be really quiet in any public transportation in Japan.Japanese do not react nor comment but they do not like it.Just a sincere advice.As you see they do not talk and very quiet as respect to others.
OMG! Where was this vlog before we came to Japan? It's so helpful for all of us newbies. We had a hard time figuring things out, but you guys explain the process so well.
Just a bit of information. The shinkansen runs on electricity disseminated through the pantographs mounted on the roof of the train cars. The magnetic levitation (maglev) you mentioned is currently under construction, with the first operational service planned for about 4 years from now. The train conductors do not need to see your passes/tickets because they have information regarding what seats are occupied in the reserved seating cars. So unless you switch to a seat not reserved, they don't need to check your pass/tickets (actually preferring to leave you in peace to enjoy the ride). Lastly, the shape of the shinkansen, especially the nose of the train, has been primarily designed to alleviate the pressure wave generated when entering tunnels. as well as making it more aerodynamic overall. It was a necessary technological innovation for Japan as there are numerous tunnels on the shinkansen routing. Lastly, the Shinkansen pass is currently only usable for Hikari and Kodama services. This just means that these trains stop at more stations along the way. The Nozomi service is the fastest in terms of time to reach the destination, which is because it makes far less stops (usually at major cities such as Yokohama, Nagoya, etc.) along the way. The trains are all the same for your travel route, only differentiated by the number of stops which translates to the amount of time required to reach the destination in question. You actually purchased and used your JR passes at a good time. JR announced increases of approximately 70% for these passes to go into effect sometime in October 2023; they have held the price constant on these passes for a long time, so an increase was to be expected. Still, in spite of the significantly increased cost, one benefit of the "new" passes is that they will become valid for the quicker Nozomi and Mizuho services. For those looking at the "new" passes with the higher cost, it's recommended that they evaluate the planned itinerary for cost utilization. If travel is somewhat limited where it isn't cost effective to use a pass, consider using JR's smartEX Shinkansen online service where train tickets may be purchased from 1 month up to 4 minutes before the scheduled train departs, with unlimited changes to the reservation. There is also online seat selection. The tickets can be delivered to a QR code on your smartphone, a linked IC card like Suica, or even having a physical ticket printed out at the station. Plus, there are special discounts (Hayatoku fares) of about 25% on tickets purchased up to 3 days before departure. One just needs to register for this service in order to use it, and download the app to a smartphone if planning to use this device (note - the website is offered in English). Other than that, enjoy the JR Pass. The trains in Japan are the best way to travel throughout this remarkable and unique country.

The MAGLEV opening in 4yrs is doomed, because construction has been delayed for several years due to COVID-19, and furthermore Shizuoka Pref., which is on the route, is opposed to the deep tunnel and will not issue a construction permit...😞

For any trip on Bullet train, always be 30 minutes early. Then you can take time to go get bentos, drinks or snacks. The trains do not have as much dining options as they used to. Now stations are like malls, so there is so much fresh food available before you get on the train.
That train ride looks very comfortable, the bento box looks delicious, yum You turned your back one minute then Colt got his breakfast ice cream 😮 HAHAHA

Shinkansens are NOT maglevs and they do NOT levitate. They are normal trains. Next to that: green class is more like business class, NOT first class. You’d have to use Granclass for that. Also: be quiet in the train, you guys have zero sense of your surroundings and customs. Especially in the green class.

Are you sure? Because we got that straight from the JRpass website: “On the train itself are superconducting electromagnets, called bogies. When stopped, the train rests on rubber wheels. To begin motion, the train moves forward slowly on these wheels, allowing the magnets beneath the train to interact with those of the guideway.” It made sense to us because the train was so smooth, so the experience matched as well.
@@AlwaysBeChanging Yes, I’m sure. They have a Maglev test track for future developments, but all conventional Shinkansens are normal high speed trains. Japan does NOT have any transit maglevs.
@@AlwaysBeChanging BTW: A simple Google query would’ve told you that. They are building a maglev track between Tokyo and Nagoya, but it’s far from open, with no opening date even announced. The ride is so smooth because the rails are extremely precise and angle into the corners and the cabs have excellent suspension.
Also, when you heard the chimes, you have 3 minutes until the train stops. Have your bags ready to go like one-ish stop in advance, because you just don't have time to think when you have to get off. Also in Japan, trains are nearly always on time, but if you are switching trains, try to give at least a 30 minute window, it allows you to take your time and not get lost.

It is a little strange (for a Japanese) to see the VLOG introduce eating an Ekiben on the Shinkansen as an activity like an amusement park attraction, but come to think of it, when I was a little boy, I couldn't stop being excited every time rode the Shinkansen, too. And, Baskin-Robbins is great, but "Reitō Mikan"(frozen tangerines) is recommend too😋
Welcome to Japan！Glad that you enjoyed Shinkansen！I'm afraid so far no shinkansen trains levitate. That's the Chuo Linear Shinkansen now under construction. It will start operation later than 2027. The maximum speed of which will be about 500km/h. No tickets are now checked in shinkansen trains, as they all have been already checked when you inserted the tickets to walk through the gate. They used to check our tickets in shinkansen trains maybe more than 20 years ago.
We did learn that we got confused about the maglev. We tried turning the seats around. It’s possible to turn them if the train is traveling the other direction (you have to turn all of them) but it doesn’t work to make seats face each other. There isn’t enough legroom.
Rail pass can now be purchased directly online and you can make reservations online in advance and not have to bring the vouchers (something to forget) anymore!

Yes, that price sounds right. I got them from the JRPass website. Make sure to purchase with plenty of time to get them in the mail before you go to Japan. And try to get to the train station a little for your first ride so you have time to get seated tickets for all your rides you have planned during your stay. It’s easiest to get it all done at once.

Yes, you can book using the JR pass app (I believe, we didn’t do it that way) or the website but I think you still need to exchange your vouchers and get your seat tickets in hand. And you still need to show your passport when you exchange the voucher.

Fuji is always going to be hit or miss to be able to see it, often has clouds around it. Always be on the right side of the train leaving Tokyo to try and see it. Coming from the west (Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya) be on the left side.
The Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto was built in a hurry in time for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, so there are many curves and it is not very fast. Japan is now building a Maglev Train. That's a speed of 500km.
We had to make a correction on the maglev train. We can’t wait until it’s finished. The Shinkansen is still far superior to Europe and North American trains.
Sorry…the present Shinkansen you are on is not the maglev…This newer type will be much much faster and quieter especially when it lifts off the rails. This newest one has a few hurdles to overcome but hopefully I will someday travel from Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka within 68 minutes. Living in Japan….We will use the Shinkansen for the shorter routes because domestic flying to longer destinations is much cheaper. If you have to you almost whisper. Also the foot rests with "carpets" on them are not to be touched by shoes. Japanese people are really polite so no one will ever correct you or confront you about anything in public, but it's good advice to read up on etiquette before visiting. It's an old country with lots of rules and manners that are very specific to them. Anyway - I like your content and love that you bring your children along. Memories for life!

Erin the reason why they have those pictures on how to use the toilet is because in China, the toilets are on the ground and you just stand over them and do your business (which is actually more ideal and sanitary if you think about it). That would be cool if you guys go to a sumo wrestling match, I'm sure the kids would get a kick out of it.
Actually, you could rotate your seats to face your kids. The only thing you had to do was to press down a foot pedal at the side of your seat, and then the seats could be rotated very easily. Too bad that the station attendant didn't explain that to you when you bought your tickets.
We actually discovered that and tried it. But if only one set of seats is turned there is no room for your feet, the seats facing you are too close. We figured turning the seats only worked if all the seats were turned and the changed them based on which direction the train is headed.
Our car was nearly empty and we didn't speak loudly. As always, we were respectful of people around us and, while there is no rule against speaking on these trains (except for phone conversations), we made sure that we didn't disrupt others.

Typical Yanks. Loud and ignorant and complacent. The Shinkansen is not a "maglev". Yes, you can turn the seats to make it a quad. Most of all, you should not be so loud on trains and any public places. The reason why your ears do not hurt when the train goes into a tunnel is because of the design (that is why the first and last train look like a duck bill. It is based on bio-mimicry to reduce any impact upon hitting different medium surfaces). It is Japanese technology. I hope you learned to be subtle and considerate while you were in Japan.

For any trip on Bullet train, always be 30 minutes early. Then you can take time to go get bentos, drinks or snacks. The trains do not have as much dining options as they used to. Now stations are like malls, so there is so much fresh food available before you get on the train.

Shinkansens are NOT maglevs and they do NOT levitate. They are normal trains.
Next to that: green class is more like business class, NOT first class. You’d have to use Granclass for that.
Also: be quiet in the train, you guys have zero sense of your surroundings and customs. Especially in the green class.

Are you sure? Because we got that straight from the JRpass website: “On the train itself are superconducting electromagnets, called bogies. When stopped, the train rests on rubber wheels. To begin motion, the train moves forward slowly on these wheels, allowing the magnets beneath the train to interact with those of the guideway.” It made sense to us because the train was so smooth, so the experience matched as well.
@@AlwaysBeChanging Yes, I’m sure. They have a Maglev test track for future developments, but all conventional Shinkansens are normal high speed trains. Japan does NOT have any transit maglevs.

The ride is so smooth because the rails are extremely precise and angle into the corners and the cabs have excellent suspension.

We’ll have to figure out how to make that work next time. When we tried it we didn’t have any leg room.
Also, when you heard the chimes, you have 3 minutes until the train stops. Have your bags ready to go like one-ish stop in advance, because you just don't have time to think when you have to get off. Also in Japan, trains are nearly always on time, but if you are switching trains, try to give at least a 30 minute window, it allows you to take your time and not get lost.

It is a little strange (for a Japanese) to see the VLOG introduce eating an Ekiben on the Shinkansen as an activity like an amusement park attraction, but come to think of it, when I was a little boy, I couldn't stop being excited every time rode the Shinkansen, too. And, Baskin-Robbins is great, but "Reitō Mikan"(frozen tangerines) is recommend too😋

Welcome to Japan！Glad that you enjoyed Shinkansen！I'm afraid so far no shinkansen trains levitate. That's the Chuo Linear Shinkansen now under construction. It will start operation later than 2027. The maximum speed of which will be about 500km/h. No tickets are now checked in shinkansen trains, as they all have been already checked when you inserted the tickets to walk through the gate. They used to check our tickets in shinkansen trains maybe more than 20 years ago.

I think you could rotate the seat to sit across from each other (Sorry if I'm wrong). By the way, it's not a maglev train (yet).😉
We did learn that we got confused about the maglev. We tried turning the seats around. It’s possible to turn them if the train is traveling the other direction (you have to turn all of them) but it doesn’t work to make seats face each other. There isn’t enough legroom.

Rail pass can now be purchased directly online and you can make reservations online in advance and not have to bring the vouchers (something to forget) anymore!

Yes, that price sounds right. I got them from the JRPass website. Make sure to purchase with plenty of time to get them in the mail before you go to Japan. And try to get to the train station a little for your first ride so you have time to get seated tickets for all your rides you have planned during your stay. It’s easiest to get it all done at once.

Can we book the bullet train with Jr pass even before arriving in Japan?
Yes, you can book using the JR pass app (I believe, we didn’t do it that way) or the website but I think you still need to exchange your vouchers and get your seat tickets in hand. And you still need to show your passport when you exchange the voucher.

@@frankfrankie888 the green pass does have a snack service. You can probably buy tickets at the train station at several kiosks.
You may be excited and having fun, but you have to stay quiet in the car for the sake of the people who are upgrading from regular seats and riding in green cars. I wish I had more compassion for others. But I want you to enjoy Japan.

Fuji is always going to be hit or miss to be able to see it, often has clouds around it. Always be on the right side of the train leaving Tokyo to try and see it. Coming from the west (Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya) be on the left side.

The Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto was built in a hurry in time for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, so there are many curves and it is not very fast. Japan is now building a Maglev Train. That's a speed of 500km.
We had to make a correction on the maglev train. We can’t wait until it’s finished. The Shinkansen is still far superior to Europe and North American trains.

Sorry…the present Shinkansen you are on is not the maglev…This newer type will be much much faster and quieter especially when it lifts off the rails. This newest one has a few hurdles to overcome but hopefully I will someday travel from Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka within 68 minutes. Living in Japan….We will use the Shinkansen for the shorter routes because domestic flying to longer destinations is much cheaper. Your video was intriguing from a foreign traveler’s perspective…quite informative with a little bit of cantor…..very nice

@@AlwaysBeChanging But there were people right next to you trying to sleep. I don't want to criticize, but I thought it was common knowledge that no one speaks on public transport in japan. If you have to you almost whisper. Also the foot rests with "carpets" on them are not to be touched by shoes. Japanese people are really polite so no one will ever correct you or confront you about anything in public, but it's good advice to read up on etiquette before visiting. It's an old country with lots of rules and manners that are very specific to them. Anyway - I like your content and love that you bring your children along. Memories for life!

Guys, cool video like always. Erin the reason why they have those pictures on how to use the toilet is because in China, the toilets are on the ground and you just stand over them and do your business (which is actually more ideal and sanitary if you think about it).

Actually, you could rotate your seats to face your kids. The only thing you had to do was to press down a foot pedal at the side of your seat, and then the seats could be rotated very easily. Too bad that the station attendant didn't explain that to you when you bought your tickets.
We actually discovered that and tried it. But if only one set of seats is turned there is no room for your feet, the seats facing you are too close. We figured turning the seats only worked if all the seats were turned and the changed them based on which direction the train is headed.
It's best to refrain from talking on the train.
Our car was nearly empty and we didn't speak loudly. As always, we were respectful of people around us and, while there is no rule against speaking on these trains (except for phone conversations), we made sure that we didn't disrupt others.

Typical Yanks. Loud and ignorant and complacent. The Shinkansen is not a "maglev". Yes, you can turn the seats to make it a quad. Most of all, you should not be so loud on trains and any public places. The reason why your ears do not hurt when the train goes into a tunnel is because of the design (that is why the first and last train look like a duck bill. It is based on bio-mimicry to reduce any impact upon hitting different medium surfaces). It is Japanese technology. I hope you learned to be subtle and considerate while you were in Japan.
