Had these cakes myself. Two with the peas is a good sized meal. If you had chips then one is enough. You can see the quality. Had the cakes from Tesco, saved a pound & got two bits of cardboard that tasted like floor tiles so never again. Sometimes saving a little means you lose a lot.
I got Aldi ones, horrible, threw them in the garden, a few starlings came along and flew off as quick, wasn't until a savage of a seagull came that they vanished
The traffic light nutrition info on the front can be a bit misleading. In fish there are oils and fats that are beneficial to health, and these can prevent disease and illness, so 22% might sound high but it's not as bad as it may first seem.

As you shop at M&S, taking into account your jaw predicament, a must buy is the £12 Gourmet meal deal. The Beef Bourguignon is delicious Gaz. It's worth a tenna on its own. Their creamy mash Is ideal for the side dish. Deserts are your choice, although I found the cheesecake's very heavy n super rich. Starters are spot on. Review it Gaz it'll be worth it. PS. The main really is for 2 folk 😱 I know 😂
I get Harry ramston's mushy peas ,in a tin for about 75p a tin . It does look good , but I got some fish cakes from heron foods, for about £2-50p . Fish cakes with mushypea filing .having them for dinner to night .Take care and all the best. 😊😊
In the US fish cakes don’t have potatoes in them, usually a lot of things like onions, garlic, peppers ( capsicums) and spices, egg, and either breadcrumbs,or crushed crackers, then coated in breadcrumbs, sometimes especially in restaurants they bind them together with bechamel sauce, and lump crab cakes are the favorites here, and very expensive,at home most people make them out of salmon,or tuna.I still make mine with mashed potato.😊
M&S do some lovely dishes but I wish they would realise that the country is in economic crisis and people are struggling to feed their family especially those with children. It is always so expensive! That is why Aldi are doing so well I think...... a lot of their 'extra special' range is really good and I think just as good as M&S. Glad you enjoyed them though... hope your jaw is healing x
I suppose there's still a place in the market for high quality food, and obviously it'll be priced accordingly. If you go to London you'll find food shops which make M&S look like a discount supermarket. The fact we have the choice is good.
But M&S isn't catering for shoppers on a budget. That's what Aldi and Lidl are for. M&S couldn't give a fig if those on their uppers can't afford M&S prices. Back in the early 2000s when I was living ultra frugally before my pension started, I did go very occasionally to the M&S food hall as a special treat, but I knew that one purchase a week (an egg and prawn sub) was expensive.
@@BaldFoodieGuy You could add a Chew Scale flash in the top left corner, say from 1 to 10. After chomping through the fishcake I'd say you're about at Chew Scale #4.
I’ve tried the M&S mushy peas & found them to be too salty. I prefer Harry Ramsdens’ mushy peas from Iceland. I find that when M&S do “The Best" versions of their products they are not always better than the standard versions.
If you like smoked haddock, buy a packet of two fillets from Aldi or Lidl. The same price in both stores, £3.59 for 230g. I always cook one fillet for breakfast and I do it in the microwave. The thing about smoked haddock is that it is very time critical. Just a few seconds too long and it's overdone. However, if it is underdone, you can put it back in for 5 seconds. In my 700W microwave a 130g fillet takes approximately 80 seconds. Increase time for larger fillets. If your microwave oven is rated at 800W I would cook it for 60 seconds, then maybe a bit more if it's not yet done. You can tell whether it's done by gently lifting some of the fish with a knife to see if the flakes are separating. Before cooking I lightly sprinkle the fish with dried dill and put a small knob of butter on top. I always cover the plate with a microwave plastic dome to keep in the steam.
Tinned mushy peas are an insult to mushy peas, even a lot of chip shops are fobbing people off with them, so a lot of people have no idea what proper mushy peas are. If you have to resort to tinned peas go for the marrow fat because they mush naturally. But get the boxes of peas you have to soak. Slow cookers are great for mushy peas and less mess. By the way add sugar and salt once cooked.
At my Aldi store...in Australia they sell those with salmon and a cream sauce and I have them as a snack or a meal with vegies, and sometimes they have Mac and cheese bakes which are so good and same size as the fish ones.
2 mins in: "They are quite chunky aren't they" 4 mins in: "I'm gonna have two, I am quite hungry, and they are pretty small ain't they" 😂😂 They look delicious, as a lover of seafood this are a bit of me! Great review as always!

Something you could try that's soft.Get some instant mashed potatoes(no lumps) some good quality condensed Cream of Chicken or Cream of Mushroom or anything like those you like, either some ground meat,if you can handle it, or soft canned meat.Heat the soup with half a can of milk and add either cooked ground meat or canned meat, making sure to break it up fine first in either case.Season to taste.Put down some potatoes on a plate, ladle some of the soup gravy on top. This was one of my dad's bachelor dishes. When you can chew a cooked seasoned beef patty can be used on top of the potatoes and then the soup ladled over it.Cutting the milk in half makes a nice thick sauce.
A lot of money for a very small amount of Haddock. It's a grand total of 72 grams of Haddock or 36 grams each fishcake. That's very poor value, even considering it's processed, manufactured and premium. It's not even close to £1 worth of actual fish in the entire product.
That reminds me I have some cod fillets in the freezer waiting to be turned into fishcakes. I keep saying I'm going to do them the next day but never get round to doing the mashed potato.

We had a fantastic M&S foodhall, for some weird reason, i think it was due to rent, they closed the foodhall, but the good/bad news is they are reopening next yr on another retail park, the bad news, the nearest M&S is in town, and with all towns there is a car parking issue.
I like fish cakes, and those look nice so I'm quite tempted to get some to try them. And the mushy peas, too, though I would never in a million years add sugar to them. Not sure I'd have chips with them, though, given the fish cakes have potato in them.
Your face healed up in no time Gaz. Regarding the fishcakes, I think that price is steep. Think I will stick with the Aldi melt in middle ones, way cheaper and even cheaper when they are reduced.
Both Aldi and Lidl have the same fish cakes at £1.99 manufactured in the same factory. Theres a range of 3 main variants at Aldi/Lidl with 2 additional random variants that turn up from time to time. There was a Thai Curry variant which pops up from time to time and its brilliant!
That’s our tea sorted for Saturday night, we’re off to Chorley to the M&S food hall anyway for some bits, sorry though Gaz we’ll be having homemade chips too. A great shout mate 👍🏼🇬🇧🇬🇧
I love these Gareth & these are on my weekly shopping list. I’ve never tried them peas. I have mine with a tin of bachelors chip shop style mushy peas & homemade triple cooked chips. I have a slice of bread & butter & I know lots of people are going to be grossed out but I make a butty with a bit of the fishcake, some chips and some peas. Totally lush. Do you like scallops? One thing for you to try and another thing on my weekly list is Coquilles St Jacques. You get 2 shells and inside its scallops cooked in a velvety white sauce, topped with creamy mash and hand garnished with cheddar cheese crumb. They are quite expensive at £7 for 2 shells. But surprisingly very filling & so worth it x
@@BaldFoodieGuy You’re welcome. Only little baby scallops inside, but you do get quite a few M&S don’t scrimp on them. Mind you at £7 for 2 I would hope not lol x

Making me hungry now Gareth. Good review. Sainsbury's used to do something similar but haven't bought any of theirs for a while now and we've no M&S here so I can't do a comparison.. Perhaps you could sometime. Look after that jaw and take care.
Lidl do cheese filled fishcakes. They do Cod & parsley, Haddock, Thai style king prawn or Salmon with Spinach and Lemon. The price? £1.99 for two. I've tried them all and they are tasty. I like to get the Cod or Haddock ones and squidge them down between two slices of bread and butter, yummy. They are 290gms. As for mushy peas? I either buy the tinned version or just buy a tin of marrowfat peas and mash them up a bit. Either that or I go for some good old liquor sauce made from fresh parsley. That goes down well with some creamy, buttery mashed spuds. I love fish, I eat some nearly everyday for lunch. I'm into having a few good sized whole Sardines at the moment, or some smoked Mackerel fillets. I also love Kippers, but they are getting hard to find in stores today. Some white pepper, a splash of vinegar, a knob of butter and some bread and butter? That's Heaven on plate. I will say that these M&S fishcakes looked great, sourced from British trawlers and have a good amount of cheese. Are they for me? At nearly a fiver? I don't think I will be buying them anytime soon. If you love fish? Do what you can to support British trawlers, just like British butchers.👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍.

Hi Gareth, Thanks for your review 👍all looked lovely but I will be sticking to Aldi‘s for my mushy peas 3 tins for the price of your 1 but glad you enjoyed Gareth, when you are fully recovered you won’t know what to eat first I bet it will be a nice bit of steak 🥩 all the best Lin
looks Really good . Yah chips and Butter Bread are required also Tarter Sauce and Ketchup . Mushy Peas in the Can are probably the Same as those in the fancy plastic Can.
Everybody moans about the price. If you want cheap cheap dog food, then that’s cool. But if you want the best you gotta pay. I only buy all my food in M&S and it’s fantastic, but I don’t bitch about the price.
They do look very nice Gareth but a wee bit pricey considering Aldi do melt in the middle fish cakes ,my favourite being the parsley sauce one, they do have others, at £1.99, maybe worth a look for you?, great review as usual
Hi Gaz... glad you're able to eat a little more. I've had those before, they were delicious, but as you say, not enough fish. When will you be able to use your jaw again properly? I wish you well brother.
Also one of the absolute cheapest things you can make. you can buy a massive bag of the Lockwood ones for £1 and they'll be far better as you can season them as you like

You get 2 shells and inside its scallops cooked in a velvety white sauce, topped with creamy mash and hand garnished with cheddar cheese crumb. They are quite expensive at £7 for 2 shells. But surprisingly very filling & so worth it x
Thank you Sarah I've had scallops in the past but not had them for a while. I should try them again. Thank you kindly x
@@BaldFoodieGuy You’re welcome. Only little baby scallops inside, but you do get quite a few M&S don’t scrimp on them. Mind you at £7 for 2 I would hope not lol x
@sarah30uk yes that's a hefty price, I know in a restaurant they are about 15 quid for 2 but it's been a while lol x

Making me hungry now Gareth. Good review. Sainsbury's used to do something similar but haven't bought any of theirs for a while now and we've no M&S here so I can't do a comparison.. Perhaps you could sometime. Look after that jaw and take care.
*Fishy to me lol 👌🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻*
I had a pot of cottage cheese watching lol. *Nicely Reviewed meal from Marks& Spencer*
Hope you’re doing good there
Glad you enjoyed it
These look delicious. Bit pricey but you only live once. Bit of a treat.
Cheers Gerry
Looking well mate, do they reckon you'll heal completely?
Hope so, hope my jaw gets better
@@BaldFoodieGuy of course you will heal fractures, which I’m sure is what you have take 6-8 weeks to fully heal,I know I have had them twice, though not on my face.Once healed you will never know it was broken.good luck my friend.😊
Fantastic review Gareth! The fishcakes look amazing! My favourite mushy peas are from Aldi great consistency and price. Have you tried Marks and Spencers Tea Cakes? The best tea cakes ever! Pleased you are getting better, Best Wishes From Graham.
Cheers Graham
Look exactly same as ones I got from Lidl
Hi Gareth, Thanks for your review 👍all looked lovely but I will be sticking to Aldi‘s for my mushy peas 3 tins for the price of your 1 but glad you enjoyed Gareth, when you are fully recovered you won’t know what to eat first I bet it will be a nice bit of steak 🥩 all the best Lin
Sounds great! Thanks Linda
No prob just so glad you are on the mend & looking ok 👍🙂
Some people add vinegar to mushy peas
looks Really good . Yah chips and Butter Bread are required also Tarter Sauce and Ketchup . Mushy Peas in the Can are probably the Same as those in the fancy plastic Can.
Cheers John
Everybody moans about the price. If you want cheap cheap dog food, then that’s cool. But if you want the best you gotta pay. I only buy all my food in M&S and it’s fantastic, but I don’t bitch about the price.
i have had them absolutely great can leave the mushy peas ,nice choice better than soup your deffo on the mend great to see .👍👍😄😄😄
Ooo can’t eat salt substitute, makes me swell up😳
They do look very nice Gareth but a wee bit pricey considering Aldi do melt in the middle fish cakes ,my favourite being the parsley sauce one, they do have others, at £1.99, maybe worth a look for you?, great review as usual
Thanks 👍
Hi Gaz... glad you're able to eat a little more. I've had those before, they were delicious, but as you say, not enough fish.
When will you be able to use your jaw again properly?
I wish you well brother.
Cheers Col
Way out of my price range for a Yorkshireman 😂
Those fish cakes, some cod in cheese sauce some mash and mushy peas.
Forgot to add , Mr G… Morrisons melt in the middle fish cakes are 2 for £5.00 ( 2 per pack )
Dave
Cheers Dave
Could you review jaffa cake.flavoured tea from Aldi please??
Jaffa cakes will be easy to eat yum 😋
I like to add mint sauce to my mushy peas. Those seem a bit expensive for the portion size.
Also one of the absolute cheapest things you can make. you can buy a massive bag of the Lockwood ones for £1 and they'll be far better as you can season them as you like
