Camino de Santiago - Day #1 - journey through the Pyrenees | August 2020

  • They say the hardest section on the Camino de Santiago is the first day crossing the Pyrenees from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Roncesvalles because of the significant altitude change. Well, they are not wide off the mark, but with some physical preparation it is very much doable.
    In any case, the view and the surroundings compensate everything.

    I'm so envious of you, I was supposed to be walking the Camino this year (after changed my mind back and forth thousand of times). lol Thank you for sharing your adventures. Can hardly wait to see more of your videos. Be safe. Sending good thoughts from Pacific Northwest, USA.

      Well, it is not that easy to arrange such a trip, especially from that far. For me it is only possible when I'm between jobs like this year:D But I highly encourage everyone to try this or something similar. If you can do it without any time limit, then it is nothing to compare. You can unplug, no news (no Trump, nor the opposition), no boss, no clients, no emails, no pressure, such a big freedom, you go as fast as you want, you go as far as you want, you walk alone or with others, you stop when you want, you do as you feel. And all through breathtaking landscape...

      It is an experience nothing to compare, I'd definitely recommend to do something like this! Unfortunately the time is not the best to do it in September due to the actual covid situation in Spain. But let's hope it will improve soon.

    Do they still play the wake up call hymn in the morning in roncesvalles hostel?

    • @petertothtoma
      @petertothtoma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, they certainly do! For a damn hour:D The wake up sequence is: church bell, rooster, mobile phone alarm in the next bed, holy music, then a manager from the front desk says good morning:D

    Hi, many thanks for your post it is really helpful. We are planning to start in October but are concerned about the hostels - are they very busy? Do they feel safe? Socially distance?

    • @petertothtoma
      @petertothtoma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After 20 days so far all the places we stayed at were not that busy, seemingly there were always plenty of extra space. I felt pretty safe, I have even my laptop with me. Never heard or had any problem so far. Regarding myself, I’m not afraid of the virus, but I wouldn't recommend it to people at high risk from the virus. I've met people with different fitness level and from different generations (some older ones as well), country, and they looked pretty happy and alive ;- ) But I plan to do a quick summary video to address the points you mentioned.

    Man! I am planning to walk the Camino at the end of this month. Getting ready to buy all my stuff. Are you meeting many people on the way?

    • @petertothtoma
      @petertothtoma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are not many people, compering to what it looked like before the COVID 19, the Camino is sort of "empty". It is a unique experience, best time probably if you wanna be alone (spiritual journey). Currently I'm traveling with a group of 6-7 people, but you can meet more people here and there. In the municipal albergue ("mass accommodation") in Pamplona I've seen many folks, but I haven't seen many of them on the road later on.

    • @petertothtoma
      @petertothtoma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh and for the gear you plan to buy, I was thinking to do a quick summary video about my experiences so far, let me know if you are interested.

    • @petertothtoma
      @petertothtoma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And the corona virus situation is getting slowly but steadily worst in Spain, but they say they won't do a very strict lock down as in March. I'm optimistic that you can buy food, and find accommodation on the way, but keep an eye on the situation.

      @@petertothtoma I would and am planning to go after the pandemic. Many things I would do different this time. Main reason...I would not try to do it in 34 days like I did. I would take more time to visit the small towns and larger cities. Many people go back and do it a second time.

      And I would definitely concentrate more on the spiritual part.
