    I’m planning on making my own workbench and have watched dozens of vids. Your plan/vid is the best by far. Good work and thanks!

    Good explaining! btw. when you were cutting the 4x4 with the table saw, that is one of the ways to get kick-back since the wood between the blade and fence could go slightly askew and get pulled up by the teeth of the blade since it is tightly gripped by the tool. Using a cross-cut sled alleviates that problem.

    Great idea to use the oscilating saw for cleaning out the lap joints! I've always used a chisel but your way looks easier and faster.

    • @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re
      @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got that tool about 5 years ago, one of my favorite tools, use it on my "real job" almost every job for one thing or another, but to clean out joints like that works a lot easier. I'm sure someone who does woodworking for a living out there wouldn't approve but for a weekend warrior and a bench I'm going to abuse it works. Thanks for commenting.

    Great video! I was thinking of using your method to build a bench/table for my wife for her Pottery. Do you think it would be strong enough to span 8'? For the top I will be using 3/4" birch as this works good with clay I guess. If 8' is too far what is the max you would go? Thank you, Ken

      Thank you, I built that almost a year ago now, still using it. I did add some drawers to one side, a door in the middle and the left side holds my small compressor now but still solid as a rock. The premade top is still in very good condition surprisingly, since mine is more of a work station/desk I think that top was a perfect choice. With a piece of laminate glued on would last me forever. Thanks again for watching and if you haven't already, please subscribe would help my channel out.

      Completely understand that, I think every other tool I have in the garage is on wheels feel like I spend half the time working just rolling things from one side to the other. Thanks for dropping a comment, and the bench top after 2 years is still intact. Has a few dents, dings and other things on it, but still a solid top solution for the price if you have no way of clamping a large top and leveling it yourself. My other choice was a butcher block top, but price was outrageous at the time, may have come down a little.

      Sorry for the super slow response, my regular job has been crazy lately, somehow this slipped through. Yes I did add drawers to the right hand side, a door to the middle and left the left side open for a small compressor. I didn't film it, had never done that before so it's not the prettiest thing in the world but it does work. I'll try to do an update on what I did this week. Thanks for dropping a comment. Yeah I'm about 8 - 10 months in to my self taught TH-cam Academy. That bench was one of the first things I built. I have another channel, but it is so covered with a little bit of everything I'm not really picking up subscribers like I think I should so I'm separating my pages out a little. I've picked up a few tools over the last several months, some dust collectors and some used more than I ever thought I would. Good luck with it, I have updated it since that original build I did a video but, well it looked like a drunken Tarintino film so it got left on the cutting floor. I added 3 drawers to the right, a door in the middle and left the left side open for a compressor. Again thanks for commenting and subscribing. Oh and that "cheap" top besides a few dents and dings still in excellent shape.

    If you are a rookie, then I'm a bench warmer. I appreciate a video showing how to build things with just basic tools - like most of us beginners. Other videos use planers, template jigs, expensive accessories for screwing holes, etc.. Your video shows beginners don't need all that fancy equipment to build a simple sturdy workbench with careful squaring, cutting and measurements.

    • @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re
      @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the comment, I do have the planer, jointer and some of the other fun stuff but I bought the "best of the cheap" and still use a skill saw, miter saw, and several other beginner tools all the time. I still look at videos like you said "Simple to make" In my 500,000.00 workshop... lol Again thanks for watching and dropping a comment.

    Great job. Thanks for this.
    One question: Didn't you need to allow for wood movement when attaching the top?

    • @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re
      @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly but my garage is somewhat climate controlled, insulated, A/C summer and wall heater in the winter. Also in the Myrtle Beach area so not harsh cold spells. Been together over a year now, no slack, overhangs or wiggles, still like a rock. I used interior lumber, I didn't really let it sit, straight from the box store to the floor. If you had time you could let the wood set for a few months, but I've not had many issues unless using treated, that moves Alot as it dries.

    • @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re
      @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re  ปีที่แล้ว

      The top was about $140.00, it is 72x30x1-1/2". Got it at Lowes. I tried to find a link can't find the right keyword but they still have them. It's like a "craft" top and not a Butchers block, but the butchers block is 300.00+. I bult that over a year ago and besides a couple little dents and dings the top is still holding up well. You could put a piece of laminate over the top to make it smoother or flatter, but for just every day workbench was perfect. Thanks for watching and the hardest part is notching those boards just find the best method that works for you.

    • @roger2276

      @@PoppysWoodworking-vb7re thanks man yeah Lowe's has them 30x72 for 115.00 and now I'm going to price out all the materials you listed so I can get a total cost .. all I have is a new circular saw and power impacts and drills

    • @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re
      @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roger2276 Should be all you need for that project. Good luck with it let me know how it turns out. I bought that top at about the peak of wood prices, at the time that butchers block top was almost 400.00 I was worried about durability, but again for just throwing stuff up on it and a work top no issues.

    • @roger2276
      @roger2276 ปีที่แล้ว

      So total for everything you have there in materials at Lowe's is like 235.00 in today prices and yeah I'm a little worried about the top and butcher block is really expensive 😢 but what if I put like 1/2 brown MDF over this top ... should be strong enough?! Huh

    • @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re
      @PoppysWoodworking-vb7re  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roger2276 It is pretty strong with the supports under it the issue you may run into depending on what you are doing is digging in or chipping. It's not really a "hardwood" top, but you also just laminate the top for a nice clean smooth surface. I was like you even when I picked it up and put it on the cart thought this is probably a waste but at the time I didn't want to spend the money and had no clamps big enough to make a top. I'm a good 240 and have walked all over it doing things and it doesn't budge or flex any. If your just concerned about the weight you could put an extra 2x4 or even a 4x4 under the top for support before you put it on.

    Route some edges on the thing to make more old-timey, slap some varnish on the thing, sign one leg with a Dremel or a brass plate, and then use and abuse it. 100 years from now your descendants will appreciate it.
