    And another thing (and this is actually related to the movie): The first movie said that 11 mice were given injections. And the only two that got out alive were Jonathan and Mr. Ages. The other mice are referred to as the lost six. 11 - 2 equals NINE, NOT SIX!!!! Come on, guys! Seriously, that’s basic first grade level math! Are you saying These guys, who are supposed to be freaking professional writers, can’t do basic subtraction!?

      Another TH-camr that should go full-rage on TSoN2TttR is Bobsheaux (especially during the scene where Justin and the rest of the rats of NIMH turn out to be bad guys when they were never like that until that far beyond awkward moment) because that would be so funny, as strongly opposed to when Timey defended this film from its reputation as “one of the worst animated sequels”.

    The sequel books are MUCH BETTER than this movie... more interesting even! I recommend them!
    Great review! However much of a Secret of NIMH fan that I am, I won't lie that the sequel is a guilty pleasure of mine. Jenny (and Eric Idle as Martin) are clearly the best things here, and honestly it could've been a decent follow-up had someone made the story focused on the brothers & their relationship... and perhaps if they kept the "prophecy" garbage, it could've led to some actual conflict with the whole "one son saves everyone, but two sons" issue between them. Or heck, gimme a sequel version of the 2nd book. At least it would've been neat to see how they'd handle Jenner's son after what happened in the first film's climax and such (and not having a dumb prophecy driving the dumb plot).

    Another thing with Auntie Shrew being a Karen towards Martin is that she's hypocritical. In the first movie she's prejudiced towards the rats and never is shown to have any remorse for it. That they're up to mischief and that they're not coming to help them.

    • @SuperCosmicMutantSquid
      @SuperCosmicMutantSquid 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Let's be honest; Did Auntie Shrew like anyone outside of the family? Granted, given her animal basis and how she acted like a second protect to the family after Jonathan's death, I can get why she distrusted the rats but that's what made her clashes with Martin so great in the first. He thought he could protect everyone better than her so they were both mouthing off at each other over who was the better protector of the family and who knew better.

    I agree so much when you said that children can handle dark themes in animated movies. Most family animated movies today play way too safe because they don't want to scare kids... like... man, people today are just to sensitive and it's a shame that we don't see a lot of dark mature themes. Although at least disney and pixar still does that every once and awhile.

    Honestly the whole Jenner’s son plot sound like it could work. Maybe it could have dealt with how children can be judged based on their parents legacy. First of all they should acknowledge Mrs Brisby’s accomplishments. It also could have dived more into what the stone was and be about Timmy and Jenner’s son. However, because he definitely died, they would have to change it to he had a family while the the rats lived at the farm and they were cast out after the events of the first film.

    • @ricvaladez2563
      @ricvaladez2563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Basically, both Timmy and Jenner Jr. are judged based on who their parents were. People judge Timmy based on the cool things his parents did, and Jenner Jr. and his family are cast out because they see them as traitors like his father. The two meet and learn to accept themselves and express their individuality and it helps them find out something about the Stone.

    So Mrs. Brisby never talked about her husband to her son or Nimh? And Justin & Mr. Ages are being real a$$holes in this movie they never tell Timmy why he should be like his dad they're just being cryptic & expect Timmy to figure it out. Nicodemus never left any instructions on how to guide Timmy but lets be real instead of a statue of Johnathan there should be a statue of Mrs. Brisby she was the real hero. Like Sarah Conner & Ellen Ripley she had to go outside her comfort zone, putting her life on the line, take daring risks & become a warrior in her own right. While still remaining kind, strong, caring, nurturing, loving, yet scared & vulnerable doing everything in her power to protect her children. She went to see an owl that could've eaten her that was one of her biggest fears but she overcame it so the Great Owl could tell her to see the rats of Nimh, she faces a giant rat the tried to keep her from reaching the rats, she pleads her case once they learn she's the wife of their savior the rats vow to help her. She offers to drug the cat Dragon so the rats can successfully move her home without interruption, when her home sunk into the mud the stone awakened sensing her despair but her bravery & courage Brisby saves her home & family with the power of the stone & yet years later she doesn't get recognition from the community? Here's my take Timmy snaps & tells Justin & Ages he's not his dad & he doesn't want to be like him he leaves Thorn Valley & returns home. Justin & Ages goes to retrieve Timmy & lecture him but are met with a furious Mrs. Brisby who lays into them about constantly comparing her son to his dad. That would've been a much interesting take or they could've went by some of the story from the 2nd book (Which I didn't know there was a sequels to the 1st one). I do like the idea of Timmy teaming p with Jenner's son to stop Nimh.

    believe me bro, recent years... I do understand how much it hurts seeing something completely crap all over so many things you loved for so long. Like the creators of what came after didn't understand, respect, or care one bit about it, or how you (the wide majority of fans whom many of them are very passionate) would feel about what they had so carelessly wasted in their lack of vision. Or the damage their decision would do. That kind of destruction hurts more than anything. Especially when they make you feel so powerless that most of you feel forced to resign to being silent about it, and telling others to do the same.

While not masterpieces by any means, both sequels I would argue do a better job at keeping true to the tone and spirit of the 1986 original, both build upon the themes of "An American Tail". That being the struggles of the American dream. Granted AAT4 was still pretty bat shit weird, but still decent. Both these sequels feel like ACTUAL sequels to "An American Tail", which is something I cannot and will not say about "Fievel Goes West".

      I agree. I don't think the fourth American Tail film is anywhere on par with the third one, but at least that one was memorable in some ways, whiles Fievel Goes West not only feels like a total slap in the face to the original film, but it is one of the blandest, most forgettable, most unengaging animated films I've ever seen. The third one, however, feels like a proper return to form, both in terms of visuals and with its themes, especially the latter. It's a real shame that film wasn't given the time, money and effort to be a theatrical release because, with more polishing, it could have been on par with the original, while Fievel Goes West deserved to be direct to video.

    I agree the second film even for a children's movie was total garbage. Granted the reason they had to go completely off the cuff in the second film is because they almost entirely changed the plot of the 1st film from the book version. For instance in the book version of the 1st movie Nicodemus doesn't get killed, Jenner is only mentioned as he deserted the colony and was thought to be dead due to an accident at a hardware store where 7 rats are electrocuted. The cinderblock doesn't sink into a mud puddle and there isn't a magic item that saves the Frisby/Brisby home from destruction lifting it back out of the mud. The rats experience no difficulty in moving the house, it goes off without a hitch and then final problem they are faced with is moving the colony from the Rose bush at the Fitzgiven's farm before the exterminators and scientists from NIHM flush them out with cyanide and recapture any that aren't killed outright by the gas. Being that Jenner even though he doesn't show up until the end of the second book to save his son Racso is key to things being successfully concluded in the plot of the 2nd book they had to write an entirely new plot for the second movie. In the 2nd book a congressman and the corporatist scum they work for is attempting to turn the farm country into a campground and lake resort for the ultra rich by putting in a dam to cause the river to flood. The entire community bands together farmers and other people not just the rats/wildlife of Thorn Valley and they defeat the congressman by sabotaging the dam and installing a fake program on the computer that allows them to control the dam. Jenner chews through the cord that links to their main power supply. Since in the movie version of the first book he was made into an impromptu villain and killed that would no longer be workable in the second movie.
    Given the time period the first movie was released 1981 it makes sense why they reworked the plot of the 1st movie to include a magic item and to tone down the left leaning message of the book. It definitely has an environmentalism versus big business agenda theme through the plot of the books and given the rise of conservatism that started to make a comeback in the 70s I think the writers of the film versions wanted to dumb down the thematic elements of the books. Left leaning messages and activists in the United States were demonized and sent underground for most of the 20th century at least in the states to make way for corporate fascists that pull shit like this and they attempted to purge all leftists from American society. They failed miserably but for a time it had a traumatic effect on all forms of creative media released into the mainstream that's why it's so funny to see all the far right movie critics on TH-cam getting there panties in a knot over any film or television series that has left leaning themes or an agenda to them. They want to go back to the days when movies were purely around for an escape from the real world and was completely devoid of some serious depth. This was the type of horseshit conservatives release because their base can't handle any critique to their standard operating procedures.

    RaisorBlade's assessment of the voice acting in The Secret Of Nimh 2: Timmy To The Rescue reminds me of Netflix's The Dragon Prince. Thus far in The Dragon Prince, Nicole Oliver (Zubeia), Ben Cotton (Rex Igneous), and Erik Dellums (Aaravos) are the only voice actors who sound invested; everybody else's just lackluster.

    This review was fantastic, and made me hate Nimh 2 even more than I already did. It's the epitome of the "Kids are stupid" argument. A film that dumbs down every single thing about it so kids won't get any ideas. Even A Troll In Central Park wasn't afraid to get at least a little dark. This movie is as dark as the sun. I've never seen the original Secret Of Nimh, and I know more about it that this POS. Raisor, coming from someone who's been through the ride that was your Land Before Time reviews, don't take what James said to heart. He clearly misses the point of your reviews, and from the looks of it, I doubt he'd give a shit if you explained it to him. You don't have to justify yourself to that loon.
    To me, "JUST A KIDS MOVIE/CARTOON!" is not a valid excuse for a movie or TV show to be hot shit on a plate. I mean, kids should not be subjected to trash nor should they be treated like they're idiots. If it's available for all to see, then you have the right to criticize it and if they don't like it, that's too damn bad. If something's garbage, it's trash and there's nothing you can do to disguise that. The only way they can really shut you up is to false flag you, which would make them scum, but I digress.

    Thank you for making this review. It's spot on! I had a sinking feeling that the sequel to The Secret of NIMH would try to erase the darkness of the first film. There's been some talk on different forums among us 90s kids about the "darkness" of the era. The "children's television" we grew up on didn't infantilize kids or insult our intelligence. The authors of our era knew kids could handle dark themes. They also knew it was necessary to discuss these themes in safe places like movies and television to help them deal with these themes in real life.
    I remember when Mr. Hooper from Sesame Street passed. Jim Henson made an entire episode talking about death and the Muppets were grieving! This developed emotional intelligence in children. It showed us that it's okay to be sad and that death is a part of life. This would NEVER happen on TV today.
    There were a lot of dark "children's movies/tv shows" back in the 80s and 90s like Batman: The Animated Series, Watership Down, The Dark Crystal, and Gargoyles. I can see why the Goth scene was so big back then. There was a lot of media that gave us the permission to be honest about the fact that the world can be a scary place sometimes.
