The Mazdaspeed 3 (US name) has a ton of tuning potential, too. With full bolt-ons, a mild turbo upgrade (like the BNR S3), and a solid E25 tune, you can reliably make 380/380 @ the wheels. All of this for just a few grand. GREAT bang for the buck.
Numinous the K04 can put down 310-315 on e30 and water/meth too. Granted it runs about of breath fast... I’ve been looking at various turbo upgrades for my Speed6, the S3 and S4 are at the top of my list. Don’t have any e85 available in my area, closest station is 4 hours away :(
true had a 2004 model for a year, 2.0L 150hp... and let me tell u. it felt way quicker and was quicker than any 150hp car and its proven as I raced a few
I have a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3, it's completely stock, and may I say that is by far the best handling hatch I've ever driven. It's got tons of power (263) and it's geared very well. It's by far the best bang for your buck you can get in the hot hatch world. It has a few flaws, it can sometimes have turbo seal problems and the aftermarket for it isn't as good as most other cars. I totally recommend it to anyone thinking about buying it. It puts a smile on my face 24/7
Edgard Salguero they require a lot of building, example, the fuel system is a bit weak from factory, and it needs a few mods before you can do just an exhaust, simple stuff if you aren’t a dumby and look into it, just saying it’s not as easily modifiable or as well backed up as for say, a Subaru Impreza (they’re a lot slower to begin with though so 😂)
I love my 2010 speed3. It's a badass car. I just straight pipe that girl all the way through and it sounds purdy!! Its super fun!! Been a proud owner for 8 years!
Dillon Simpkins the aftermarkets pretty good for our cars. Entry level inexpensive turbo upgrades are abundant (corksport, BNR) or you can step up to bigger more expensive kits like ATP with the GTX series Garrett turbos or Borgwarner and it’s EFR series that are capable of 600+ with a built block and auxiliary fueling
I just bought a 2012 Mazdaspeed 3. And I never thought about them until my Dad sent the link for it to me but the first couple weeks have been a blast owning it.
Ever since seeing how well their rally cars are build I have been waiting for them to make a hot hatch, and I am so glad they re doing it now and how well they have done it.
I still have my 2010 MPS and loving it! Was contemplating on swapping it for an N but now having second thoughts after reading some of the comments here. I guess I’ll have fun with it for another more year 😊 Thanks for this review!
Uhhh, what problems? The early years you had to keep an eye on the variable timing but other than that, I'm not sure what problems you're talking about. Pretty much, if you avoid the first 2 or 3 years of the car, you don't even have to worry about the few problems those had.
Also make sure those timing chains are done on the older mps. The 3 and the 6 were notorious for weak stock chains usually started rattling around the 50k mark and is a pretty expensive fix.
“...just wanna stick my fingers in there, that’s for another time though” repeated this clip a number of times and it had me laughing out loud every time. Great video guys, really looking forward to this i30N!
I'm a seaman and I've seen what Hyundai is capable of doing. Large 300+ m long ships entirely made by Hyundai. That company is very powerful and it's only a matter of know-how to cripple VW Golf GTI or Ford Focus ST.

Are you still planning on doing a video of the 3 MPS, genuinely interested in buying one soon and your videos are bye far the most unbiased and insightful on TH-cam.
Henry McComments that’s the way to go. Mine has an accessport with a custom 93 tune, intake, hpfp, coilovers, turboback exhaust, and tarmac fifteen52’s. Extremely fun. Loud turbo
Tommy Hiltrigger there's a lot of settings to use with the accessport like over-boost and launch control. I eventually want to continue my mods need the money lol
Depends on your price range and style preference. If you're looking for something around 34k you could look for a used Focus RS. That's probably your best bet for more power. If you want a coupe, check the upcoming Kia Stinger. All the GT trims come standard with a twin-turbo V6, and that's starting similar to the Focus RS. There's cheaper trims, but really... Why?

Some people are so ignorant these days, "but its a hyundai". Hyundai as a brand has improved so much over the years with the genesis and and also the kia stinger...
I love the MPS - drove one back in the states in 07 and was very pleasantly impressed (lady from the dealer wasn't at all - she nearly threw up). My friend and I ended up buying and modifying a regular mazda 3 (auto) - auctioned new, great price, turbo kit, all custom manifold, etc... got it to near 300 horses while still looking absolutely stock - that was the fun part. Was killing my fairly stock R-X8 at the time. :) thx for bringing back awesome memories.
Just got my very first car, I’m 18 and have worked and saved up and got myself the 2011 Mazda 3 mps series 1 luxury model for a bargain on gumtree. With a brand new engine replacement and turbo replacement both stock for mps, due to the previous owner when she got the car serviced they screwed the oil filter which poured all over the engine. So they replaced it with a stock brand new mps turbo and engine which has only done 31000km. I’m in love with the mps

I just listened you for the first time today. I must say I fully enjoyed your comparison. Great t know there is someone more then Clarkson that is not boring behind the wheel. Well done Bro :)
Mk1 3 MPS owner here. Amazing cars that are proper sleepers and the best part is NOBODY knows what they're, even most petrol heads. I love it! Ps, just make sure it's had its VVT + timing chain changed :)
I’ve got the i30N and absolutely love it. It puts a great big smile on your face when driving it. 5yrs unlimited mileage warranty(also covered if you take it on a track). My wife has a Audi Quattro TT over £40k and doesn’t have climate control!! What a joke!! You get so much more car for ya money. It’s a no brainer.
Dunno about the UK, but here in germany we can get a single-day registrated i30N as EU import for like 26000€, which already is pretty damn affordable for a new car with 5 years of warranty if you ask me.
I have a first Gen mazdaspeed 3 with 300+ hp after a tune, it also has mods. I rebuilt the engine cause it blew because the oil pump gave out. With the tune, it's putting down all the torque :)
I really enjoy these short, informative videos with cheaper older cars, surely every other Petrolhead loves nothing better than setting a budget for a certain car, finding what you want then rapidly increasing that budget with "if I stopped paying for that, did this," type maths then ending up in a lifetime of debt (in theory).
right hand cars are useless unless its India that most of population cannot afford them or japan that don't need them back, Australia don't need them either because they like BIG ASS POWERFUL ENGINES so basically the only market for these cars is UK where Taxes for such small car is 600 pounds and most people don't want to spend that much hence really low price on cars that nobody buys
Anyone who acts like a badge snob around Kia and Hyundai’s are daft when you look at how far they’ve come over the past few years it’s clear that that know what they’re doing. I’ve driven plenty as I’ve worked with them and they’re great cars, well built and nicely finished as well the Cee’d gt is definitely underpowered and has the wrong engine but my hope is that with the Stinger coming and the i30N that Kia will follow suit. Plus Albert Beirman and Peter Shreyer onboard they’re only bound to get better and better. But then what do I know I have a Golf Gti 😂
Yeah, Hyundai and kia have come a long way, credit where credit is due. I used to be one of the badge snobs who joked about these cars 10 or so years ago
To all those pro's saying it's just a hyundai...the N was testet and developed on the Nürburgring with actual race drivers. The guy behind the "N" (Albert Biermann) was a former engineer at BMW M GmbH. This car is absolute madness on the road.
I've had my mazda 3 mps gen2 for a month now cant beat its brilliant car quick enough standard torque steer makes it lively doesnt like the rain tho if you have the traction control on it just flashes up even in 4th gear
I prefer the older generation mazda 3, it looked more aggressive whereas the newer one is all rounded in design.... Just like what happened with the vw golf etc..... The only hot hatch that improved in design was the opel/Vauxhall astra
Fuck yeah! Glad to see somebody did a video like this. My MS3 (EU= MPS NA= MS3) is my favorite DD I've ever had. I ought to upload recent videos since I've done a lot of work to it, but man oh man... I'll be straight up with you guys, every time I sit down in that car it tries to kill me. The torque steer is insane, but I LOVE it. When you're getting on it you should have both hands on the wheel, or at least a firm grip anyways, so you don't have to actually wrestle with the steering wheel. The only time you have to is if you have a weak grip or you're holding the wheel on top with one hand. This car is a blast to DD. If anybody out there is looking to buy one, or has one but hasn't modded it yet I highly suggest you do. The driving experience is amazing. With all 3 motor mounts upgraded, a balance shaft delete, and a lightweight flywheel the vibrations and noise in the cabin is pretty loud, on the highway you have to raise your voice to talk to people. BUT WAIT! That's not the end of the world! Throw dynamat (or another brand of your preference) in your car and the noise and vibrations are mostly gone. The only vibrations you will feel are in the steering wheel, shifter, and pedals, but not in a bad overwhelming way. Feeling the vibrations in the wheel and shifter make you feel so connected to your car, and the road. Personally I prefer that. With the 3 motor mounts, BSD, and lightweight flywheel the power planted to the ground is absolutely superb. The responsiveness is THERE. No lag, no stutter, it's like having drive-by-wire throttle. I've driven all the hatchbacks available, ended up being torn between the MS3 and STI, the ST was rather boring, felt too controlled. tl;dr MS3 is like an untamed beast that loves to drive and take it hard. If you buy one, take care of it and it'll take care of you.
I FUCKING HATE BADGES SNOBBERS SO MUCH!... they wud have a golf GTI over this i30N cuz of the badge... but the i30N is so much more fun to drive and all lot more bang for ur buck... i mean albert engineered it ffs... ik the quality of the interior isnt upto VW standard but as alex said, hyundai has spent the money of the chassis and that's where it matters!
ask petrolhead what they would take, between an rx7 and an i30N and you would be alone hating in your hyundai its not badge snobber, the mazda is just a better bang for the buck car
My Dad owned both gens of the mazdaspeed 3, that second gen one was the car in which I learned to drive a manual and the car I drove the most between 16-18 years old.. never honed the car as I always drove it on public roads but man did that car feel like it had an endless supply of power! Recommend it to anyone who's looking to buy one, they seem pretty cheap for the amount of car you get and they're fairly reliable!
All these comments of people asking who wants a hyundai. Shows how little they know about the brand. This i30N is a far better option than a golf gti in every way.
They've been focusing on skyactiv technology and fuel economy for their everyday man's car. I support them in doing so. They will eventually bring the speed back.
Stephen Avery My brother had a Speed6 (the MPS), it was probably the one he bought but the thing was an absolute piece of shit. I love the car a lot, and I really hope it was his specific one that was awful and fucked up because frankly someday I want to buy one myself
It's actually got more in common with the ford focus RS as they share the same engine but the RS has been modified by ford to have an open deck design and some more modern mapping and turbo goodies. The torque limitation on the MPS' is purely to protect the rods from bending as boost comes on. The torque is too high for the rods in 2nd and 3rd gear especially. For those wanting a more refined and practical car with 4WD, get the mazda 3's older brother, the mazda 6 MPS. I've got one....seriously, best £3,000 I ever spent 👍
Love ya stuff Car Throttle! Keep making Awesome affordable car videos, they are so good! Try and do some classic 90's cars; STI, S2000, Integra Type R, Honda CRX, Honda NSX, Toyota Mr2, Rx7, Supra, Evo, 180sx.
Don't forget the 308 GTI too, 270 BHP, 19" wheels, 15" Alcon brakes, limited slip diff and the best power to weight ratio in its class. Drives superb and is cheaper to run than all the rivals.
The MPS is much more expensive to insure since it comes only with a thirsty 2.5 , the hyundai comes with a 2 liter engine and has a lot of customisation
You guys are also forgetting the crazy low end torque of a speed, hard to launch without getting wheel spin cause boost comes on fast and violently. Good tires and a quafe LSD completely fixes that though. A good launch will put the car below 6 seconds off the line
Y'know what, i've always felt your reviews have been a bit tacky and unfocused; but good job, it was really on point with addressing everything and felt really professional while still having some entertainment, keep it up!
I’d actually consider buying this Hyundai. I’ve driven the Mazdaspeed and all I remember about it was the torque steer which was unsettling under full throttle. But that’s just my opinion based on maybe three hours seat time
Bought a 2012 Mazdaspeed 3 (MPS) off the lot brand new, without even driving it... Yes I'm crazy... 51000 km and almost 6 years later... Four seasons driven (Canada)... No regrets, still love it 😆. (The 'N' looks cool too, no hate, 'k?)

To be honest, i'd rather take the Mazda. Better to work on, simpler etc
And the Hyundai is a piece of shit.
Don't buy the Mazda, that 2,3 turbo engine is known for having problems. Also, that same engine is the predecesor of Ford's EcoBoost engines
But that is why you can buy it. As it is easy to work on, you can clear these problems yourself, and that is all a car guy wants.

I prefer the mazda 6 mps..I know its bigger but the 4x4 is worth it!
waynusp1664 that’s what I drive lol
To me mazda 3 still looks somehow more fresh than hyundai.
Who’s never heard of the Hyondai Alex! The awesome commercial of the car ripping through the track will be remembered
Love that MPS, they are way more expensive in France BTW...
right hand cars are useless unless its India that most of population cannot afford them or japan that don't need them back, Australia don't need them either because they like BIG ASS POWERFUL ENGINES so basically the only market for these cars is UK where Taxes for such small car is 600 pounds and most people don't want to spend that much hence really low price on cars that nobody buys
❤The Mazdaspeed Mps❤
I prefer the older generation mazda 3, it looked more aggressive whereas the newer one is all rounded in design.... Just like what happened with the vw golf etc..... The only hot hatch that improved in design was the opel/Vauxhall astra
*Here* *I* *looking* *for* *even* *cheaper* *models* .
Gowtham Oleti golf gti mk5
I need a car under 2k usd
Miata.
Look for volvo S60/V70 starting from 2000's to 04's with 2.4T or 2.3 T5 engines.

The "AAC" Format never dissapoints! GJ as always
I actually like the Mazda more.

Alex: If you don't have your hands on the steering wheel you will die.
*Continues to do a 0-60 with one hand on the wheel*
You want him to shift with his mind? You can't do 0-60 with both hands on the wheel in a manual...
Music Man i30N is a hothatch and the RX7 is a sports coupe... Obviously Id have the RX7 but I dunno y u wud compare a hot hatchback to a sportscar
Rejoice Rone it’s because vw has an actual history with hot hatches
but is still more pretty, more fun, and with a tune and a turbo will kick you korean ass
but even if we would do the experiement with the speed 3 you would still be hating alone in your hyundai
I got a Mazda 6 sportsline 2.5 from 2009 and the Bose really rocks 😍😂
You’re representing me now. What you think, I’m gonna let you roll in a Hyundai?
Gün Gün han?
All these comments of people asking who wants a hyundai. Shows how little they know about the brand. This i30N is a far better option than a golf gti in every way.
just get a neon srt4
Jesper Henriksen which means it's a good car. Have never understood people who judge cars by theie badge
The people who are saying it’s a hyndai, drive a hyndai
Why isn’t Mazda going to bring back the 3 MPS for the 2014-present Mazda 3?
They've been focusing on skyactiv technology and fuel economy for their everyday man's car. I support them in doing so. They will eventually bring the speed back.
Cause the new skyactive tech is a msp tech put into everything
@joes04redrx8 won't be made. They've stated several times they aren't making a speed anything for a while
They're making an awd Mazda 3.not speed3 but awd Hatchback 🙄🙄
Best serie is back at it again. Loved it
Their such amazing cars. I have a srt4, but I have a lot of respect and love for them since the Mazdaspeed protege.
We need the i40n
Minecraftcar88 and the i20n coupe
Hope the N division can cook up something nice for us in the future
John J really! That will be a beast but I am not to keen on the veloster
AHMAD H. Yeah
Chacalx98EVO can you imagine i10n 😂
The speed3 is an awesome car but sadly its so underrated and unknown :(
Would personally rather have the AWD 6 MPS for £4k
Stephen Avery yep
Stephen Avery I'm pretty sure its fwd.. Not too sure but pretty sure.
Casey Lopez it’s all wheel drive, but it’s an active system so most of the time it will be front wheel drive.
Yeah the 6 MPS is AWD,its really above and beyond the 3 MPS off the line, makes a great sleeper car 😂😂
The amount of badge snobs here ffs
Give credit where it's due
that Huyndai... how can one not love it??
308 gti ❤️
Don't forget the 308 GTI too, 270 BHP, 19" wheels, 15" Alcon brakes, limited slip diff and the best power to weight ratio in its class. Drives superb and is cheaper to run than all the rivals.
The MPS is much more expensive to insure since it comes only with a thirsty 2.5 , the hyundai comes with a 2 liter engine and has a lot of customisation
The MPS 3 is much quicker then 6.7 sec to 0-60.
Yep, sub 6 most of the time.
My guess is the top mount was heat soaked af when he did that test because I definitely go 0-60 faster than 6 secs in my gen 1
You guys are also forgetting the crazy low end torque of a speed, hard to launch without getting wheel spin cause boost comes on fast and violently. Good tires and a quafe LSD completely fixes that though. A good launch will put the car below 6 seconds off the line
What happens if you cant afford the mazda
FACR TORNZ buy a junkyard vw beetle
NA mazda 3
Hyundai is amazing
Y'know what, i've always felt your reviews have been a bit tacky and unfocused; but good job, it was really on point with addressing everything and felt really professional while still having some entertainment, keep it up!
I’d actually consider buying this Hyundai. I’ve driven the Mazdaspeed and all I remember about it was the torque steer which was unsettling under full throttle. But that’s just my opinion based on maybe three hours seat time
Oooh the Hyundai sounds like 😏
I don’t get why ppl are hating on Hyundai
Eurobeat ikr
B K was first
i was 5th
I'd rather take the Mazda even if I could poop with money.
Finally some Hyundai I30 N coverage
I have a slightly tuned first gen MPS and it's a proper beast. Way better than the smiley faced ugly second gen.
