  • 1956 Desoto Firedome Sportsman 2 Door Hard Top. 85k original miles, original interior, glass, and chrome. One of only 4,589 built in 1956. Original and rare color combination. History: Purchased new by J.M. Dean in Glendale CA from Dealer #36809. I was the 4th owner. I made many bolt on modifications to make it a more reliable and enjoyable to drive. 330 ci S23 Hemi with 230 HP and a push button automatic. Official pace car of the 1956 Indy 500. In a conspiracy the Desoto was not allowed to run in the Daytona 500 in 1956 because it was faster than its big brother the Chrysler 300 which won for the 3rd consecutive year. As a pay back the Desoto was allowed to be the pace car for the Indy 500 that same year. Desoto President L. Irving Woolson drove the car and set a pace car speed record.

    I don't think there will ever be a era with car designs as nice as the 1950s.

    With the help you received from the little fellow, it's no wonder it turned out so well. I did like the new dash, it looks very much a factory original item, it's so well finished and fitted.

    DeSoto cars had a lot of beautiful colors and combinations of colors back then. It must've been Chrysler Corp's fashion line.

    The very last DeSoto my late parents had was a 1956 Fireflite sedan, moss green & white. Had Chrysler continued making DeSotos after 1961, my late parents would have coninued buying them. I have seen a few 1955 DeSotos in the San Diego area when I had lived there. My late parents told me that if I would have been in a higher income bracket that I should have bought the 1955 Fireflite sedan.

    I'm watching Vertigo which got me here. That's the car James Stewart was following Kim Novak around in up in San Francisco. I kept Googling 56 New Yorker which does look similar but then I paused movie trying to hone in on the front name it had 6 letters then like a dumby it came back to me, DeSoto! And they weren't Dodge DeSoto either back then DeSoto branched off as its own car right? Sorta like Continental branched from Lincoln around that same time. That was an era that'll never be well surpassed.

    A lot of your modifications probably lower the collector value of the car but the upgraded brakes, alternator etc. make the drivability & safety & total enjoyment of this car better. You did it your way and I respect that, All in all a beautiful car!

    • @330desoto
      @330desoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +4thstooge I can appreciate that trade off. Since this car was so rare I made it a point only to make modifications that were bolt on. Any serious collector could always return to stock but drivability would be extremely comprimised and I built it to enjoy driving.

    Wow. Well, I'm seriously impressed man. I loved the way you put that film together. I'm sure the busy music helped. But mostly I am impressed by your ingenuity. Its a wonderful way to be and the RESULTS ! Fabulous and very clever of your son to do all the real hard work to fix this car up like he did, = )

    In 1955 and 1956, DeSoto offered a 2-door Sportsman Hardtop in Firedome, and Fireflite models, it has a Hemi V-8 engine. 2-door hardtop is getting popular than its Predecessor (previous years). For 1956 DeSoto, 2-door hardtop sell more than a 4-door hardtop version.

    Very nice ride, we just didn't know back then, what we were going through or I would have bought a few cars to put in a Barn. This era will never come again. In today's world, spending a bucket of money, on a ride that might you have to push down the street, because gasoline is a thing of yesterday, is the new WORRY,,,,

    Find an original for the love of god.
    The original wheels are fine. Wheels look good on some cars just not on Desotos.
