Tyler mentioned in an interview that he was talking about his wife in this song because his grandfather already had some dementia by the time they started dating and didn’t get to know the real person he was.
I’ve listened to this song many many times but I have to admit ...watching this video brought a little tear to my eyes at the end with your summary. Tyler is a deep guy who has meaningful things to say...and a great message. Agghhhh, so refreshing in the music world.
He has said in interviews none of his grandparents were very religious, that his parents 'discovered' religion in college. I was lucky enough to see this played the 1st time I saw them. According to the setlist website, they have only played it live 32 times in a 100+ show tour.
Wow for real? I wonder what is the decided factor on whether or not they will play the song. Do they decide beforehand or is it a spur of the moment kind of song?
@@SuffiReax not sure his reasoning. According to the website, it looks like they started playing it in early May, and stopped in late June. For the most part they seem to keep the same setlist just sometimes switching a few songs in or out. It differed from leg to leg somewhat, and there were a few other noticeable differences from the time I saw them in May to the final North American leg last fall.
My dad had brain cancer and I watched die and forget everything slowly over a years time. It was hard to visit at rehab because he wasn't the dad I had the 16 years I spent with him before hand. Miss him a ton. So yea this song means a lot to me too
Yeah, the baby was not born yet when he wrote this song, but I'm sure it would apply after the fact. I thought that maybe, too, he may have started writing it when he was still alive and just kept it the same? I have had grandparents have dementia/ Alzheimer's and it is so hard to go see them when they don't know who you are. They might know that they should know you, but can't quite place you. I lost my grandma in April to Covid. Her dementia was getting really bad. I had not visited her since January. I am really glad I did. I think of her when I listen to this song.
I think the upbeat music with sad lyrics is something kinda neat that T.O.P. does. It makes me think that it goes along with their masks and two faces things. The happy upbeat music is one face, that draws you in, gets you bopping along, as you put it. Gets the passersby into the music....Then as you listen more and more, you begin to pay more attention to the lyrics, and begin to see the reality beneath. The second face. The pain, the struggles, the insecurities. I can't remember who it was, but there was also another reactor that also put it in a way I kinda liked...When you're feeling good, you can listen for the music, and when you're feeling low, you can listen for the lyrics.
Actually, Tyler confirmed in this interview that he was talking about his wife: www.nme.com/big-reads/twenty-one-pilots-interview-nme-big-read-2455816 Although, of course, there could always be multiple meanings.
I found this playlist last night, and I am LOVING IT!!! Can't wait to continue to see how much more you figure out about the boys and their music. Welcome to the clique fren!!!! 💛||-//
Yes, Alzheimer’s is horrible. My Grandmother has it and had to go into a nursing home. She began packing and hiding a bag and hiding it so she could sneak away and going “home.” It was hard going to visit her… She met my daughter when 9 months old and lit up like Christmas tree. She loved babies.
Yes my grandmother was very similar. Stopped recognizing her own kids and then didn't even recognize her own room sometimes and would try leaving saying she wanted to go home. It was very sad.
Great reaction as always! If you want a few more artists to react to, might I suggest: Jon Bellion, AJR, Quinn XCII, Lorde, half•alive, Finneas, Witt Lowry, Tom MacDonald, Imagine Dragons, Melanie Martinez.

Ah thank you. That is sad
The sad lyrics with upbeat musicality is a TOP constant throughout their work.
I am noticing that pattern
"listen I know, this one's a contradiction because of how happy it sounds, but the lyrics are so down" - Not Today (Blurryfacee album)
his grandfather was on the Vessel Album Cover!
Thats awesome!

I totally agree, he is a breath of fresh air to the music industry. Puts actual talent and deep dedication into his music.

Love your TØP reactions! Today would've been his grandfather's (a/k/a Popops) 89th bday, so I'm glad you reacted to it.
Thank you!
Oh wow, how neat. Thank you for sharing.
He was talking about his niece at the time I think but he does have a daughter now

Omg the lyrics are so sad, and here I was rocking along with you.
I don't know why but this music reminds me of the 80's 😄.
It is very sad, so confusing to the ears cause you want to just dance and sing along until you realize what you are singing.
can't wait to see this reaction!
If you want a TØP song that you’ll enjoy with a video that will BLOW YOUR MIND, react to My Blood!
That one is coming out soon!
The she is referring to his wife but he does have a daughter named Rosie!!!

when his grandfather passed away tyler's niece was born a month after so that line "i wish she knew him" refers to her
he said in an interview it's about Jenna
@@katstorm13 i've only ever heard him say it's about his niece... what interview??
@@ariesgrey www.google.com/amp/s/www.nme.com/big-reads/twenty-one-pilots-interview-nme-big-read-2455816%3famp
Rosie was born in 2020 and trench came out in 2018 so unless Jenna was pregnant for 2 years, that line couldn’t have referred to Rosie lol
@@MrIcetea2012 no one said anything about Rosie they said niece not daughter lol
Oml I love ur TOP pilots reactions dude I wanna see u react to every TOP song lmao

I am slowly working my way through them all :)
Basically the album was almost done with 13 songs, but he recorded this song on the day his grandfather died so now it's 14 songs.

I think they have only played this song live once probably due to it being emotional for him.
please react to Morph!
I've got it recorded, it'll be coming out soon!

Do a reaction on the Pantaloon next. It's same kind of song, happy beats but lyrics are so sad.

Oh yes, half•alive is a great band to do in relation to tøp
He does have a daughter but it’s about his wife and grandfather
Yeah, you won't see him play this live. He doesn't play it at shows, because it would be way too emotional for him. 💛
so am I really the only one who physically must ball my eyes out every time I hear this song or
He does have a daughter but not at this moment
