    I had the same issue on my mini one afternoon, substituted the choke cable for the throttle, worked a treat! Also you could lock it in a position so it was like cruise control! I do love a good bodge :D

    Mate! you are an absolute nutter.....and I LOVE YA! You have bought and driven some utter crap. I love the old cars you have had and like myself I have driven some sheds ie: Hillman Imp,Datsun 180B, Opel Rekord, Rover 45,Vauxhall Chevette etc...etc.

    I had a similar experience with a friend and a Chevy Corvair, the accelerator peddle broke off its mount. We used a small adjustable wrench to substitute. Fun of old cars!

    I had a similar problem on my Vespa on the A1 many moons ago. Fortunately the cable still reached far enough to attach to my boot. very weird with throttle and foot break on the right foot and clutch and gears on the left hand. I made it the 30 odd miles home. Bizarrely the clutch snapped 50 yards from home too. Well played with your unorthodox bodge.

    I've often thought the 2CV needs a hand throttle , for those long 4th gear runs when the right ankle starts to ache from 'pied a plancher', I believe a spare choke cable could be adapted as they have the friction lock , perhaps with a different coloured indicator light (purple?).

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't say I find foot-down that hard to be honest. Problem is, cruise control needs to be responsive ideally, to keep the momentum up on hills! I'll stick to wearing heavy boots for long journeys...

    Many years ago I had a old Opel manta throttle cable went so attached string to throttle. Because bonnet opens away from car left bonnet ajar then had to drive with window down and hand out window. Drove like that Newmarket to Felixstowe!

    I call those knots Bow-line not bowlin, maybe i've been getting it wrong. Check where the end of the throatle cable locates in the pedal, if that is meant to swivel or the nipple pivots in a cup effect, failure to do so will cause the cable to snap at the end fitting, likewise if the cable is not a straight pull this will stress the end fitting and cause it to snap off.
    I had a gearbox fail in an Opel Manta, suspected layshaft collapse, only had direct drive in fourth gear, BUT... i was at our Opel Manta Club AGM so i couldn't suffer the embarrasment of getting towed away from that, i mercilessly slipped the clutch to get going and drove home from South Yorkshire to Milton Keynes in fourth gear only !

    • @gevmage
      @gevmage 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is indeed spelled "bow-line", but the common pronounciation in english that I've heard is more like "bow-lin" (short "i").
      It's a super-handy knot for tying the end of a rope (or cable in this case) in a loop to attach it to something else. Unlike more common knots it doesn't tend to jam up.

    I managed to recover from the same position many, many years ago using part of an old plug which I happened to have. It was one of those old round pin plugs (5A perhaps?) and I just took one of the pins out of it and used its screw fixing to attach it to the end of the throttle cable. That way you get a new replacement nobble on the end without losing any significant cable length. Lasted for the rest of the life of the car.

    Love the 2 CV. Used to see one that was rebuilt. in my work in Los Angeles. I love the simplicity of it . Like a model t. Cheap and so practical. Like my old Vdub van from '71.
    Mechanics in LA. Are runenesly expensive. Simple cars less stressful and more fun.
    It's why leasing is so popular here in LA. 200.$ per month and you get to drive a new one. Some jobs won't hire you if your car has more than 50,000
    Miles. Rich and carnivorous cats,LA California USA.

  • @Mrcento
    @Mrcento 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I did the same once with a Fiat Cinquecento and a length of twine!. I also found i'd never been getting full throttle before because the old cable was stretching under load months before it failed. fitting the new cable "gained" me at least 10bhp haha.

    My fave hubnut video to date!

  • @Digitalpiracy
    @Digitalpiracy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I guess its easier with more powerful engines. When the cable snapped on my dad's Passat 2.0 we just tied the throttle lever to the radiator with a bit of string tensioned at about 4000rpm in neutral and wafted it home, going up and down through the gears to match the road conditions to the available power. Speed was very variable but it got there including a pretty steep climb in 1st....

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, 29bhp isn't the most! We did a similar bodge to you at first, but didn't get very far.

    Go on lad! Thinking on your feet is always a good skill to have when driving old cars! Mrs. Hubnut knows stuff. This is also handy in such situations. God though, what a weird driving experience! Better than walking though, as are most things...

  • @davidanderson3425
    @davidanderson3425 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Capt. Mainwaring would have applauded your ingenuity in such a desperate situation. Some H&S bore is bound to come along and say, 'Is this legal and did you have full control of the vehicle?' Of course if the clutch cable snapped at the same time it would have been a lot different. Only a musician used to playing a one-man band would be able get out of that one! Did your right foot still want to operate the throttle pedal even though it didn't function? Very amusing video!

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love cars from the (now sadly lost) era when ingenuity and a few basic tools would get you home. Nowadays, alas, it's mobile phone and a tow truck that gets most people out of trouble, after a several hour wait at the side of the road of course.
