When you watch older ones you see his vocal drums routine

Adam does a 10+ minute session in every concert. At Christmas it was based on “Carol of the Bells”.
“Listen to the Music” is both one of my favorite songs, and one of my favorite Home Free covers. They’ve added it to their current concert set list. And to mix it up they have a breakdown where all five guys do vocal percussion.
They are obviously singers, not beatboxer’s, but it’s a fun way for them to present something different.

I thought I'd show my cousin something cool with some Home Free and find out they originate from 20 miles where she lives and she saw them a few times on cruises...she has sat here in the hospital with me watching beatboxing videos the entire time LOL This one surprised me...

    Nice reaction!
Adam is really good in what he does as being the drum set for an a cappella band. Also his top notch solos introduce beatboxing to an entire new audience: elderly ladies!
He has said he has no time or interest in competing, but obviously follows what is happening in the bb world.
Usually before starting the looping part he says it’s Oras by SARO, but these are not always included in these fan recorded videos.
Looking forward to more of Adam’s solos and HF.

Terrific to have a knowledgeable practitioner react to this. Thanks.
This is a new genre for most HomeFree fans. And some overstate Adam's rank in the beatbox world. It's out of love, and they don't have the context.
But I always give musicians props for experimenting and getting out of their comfort zone. And Adam is an excellent example of that. I applaud him for bringing this style of beatboxing to a usually conservative, country music audience.
On their current setlist, this is past the halfway point in their 90 minute concert. He's already done their "Man of Constant Sorrow / Folsom Prison Blues" mash up and "Ain't Going Down ('Til the Sun Comes Up).
Do you know what a typical year of live events is for a professional beatboxer?
HomeFree did around 70 gigs in 2023, with Adam providing the percussion for 15 or so songs, plus a solo like this.
For more info on Adam, i suggest the Modern Drummer piece online from 7 Nov 2019. It's a brief summary of his experience and approach, in his own words.
    Again, thanks.

So it consists mostly of giving workshops, performing at events and doing stuff online. A ''successful'' pro for example has about 5-12 gigs in a year (beatbox is still a niche).
But one can make a decent living with beatbox. :)
      Thanks for your comment!

I do think Adam’s major contributions to the band are his energy and musicality. And the tenacity to stick it out for the first 13 years, and carry on as the only original member since 2016.

They've cut down their tour schedule. They used to do around 150 concerts a year. Also keep in mind Adam does all the arranging for the percussion in their 300+ songs, and runs the looper for layering the vocals of the other guys in their concerts, live, in person, on the fly -- nothing pre-recorded. The man is an absolute machine.

I am a BIG Home Free fan, thanks so much for reacting to Adam’s solo, I like the one where he is wearing a red plaid shirt the best :) check it out sometime! So sorry Austin Brown will be leaving the group soon. Hope they find someone to take his place. They will have big boots to fill. I love Home Free 😊. Great reaction 🎉

Finally, a quality beatboxer who understands the techniques reacting to one of Adam's performances! It's outstanding hearing someone else show the same quality abilities. (the typical beatboxer to review one of these videos sounds like beginner when they try to imitate him.)
    Nice, entertaining and informative reaction.

The beatboxers/sound effects guys working in the a cappella world have brought beatboxing to an entirely new audience. This sixty-something lady would have never encountered beatboxing were it not for Home Free and Voiceplay. And so it gives me an entirely new appreciation for YOUR abilities in that regard.

I don't consider Adam a beat boxer...although, he most certainly can do beat boxing...but he shines as the vocal percussionist with the driving drums replacing real drums in the HF songs. He adds beatboxer style effects and such...but really....it is his percussion that shines.....

I agree what sets Adam apart from other a cappella beatboxers is his vocal percussion. He is able to simulate the sounds of real instruments, so much so that you forget there aren't any.

I think a very good explanation for this brilliant beatboxing: Adam Rupp is inhuman. 😉 He is a drum alien in Angelguise.
You just have to because he is so unbelievably good(and handsome too😊😍)!! Like he swallowed a drum kit. And then vocally he can also make so many more (instrument) sounds which is not normal

I keep seeing people say this, but I've watched most if not all of the world beatbox Championships and the global beatbox Championships and he's never competed in either. I googled and read for quite a while and couldn't find anything. Do you mind pointing me in the right direction? I'd love to know more!

This seems to be some misinformation that Adam himself has tried to get people to stop saying. I think it potentially stems from an old article about the best beatboxers that had its formatting broken. It starts talking about Adam Rupp then switches to talking about Joel Turner, but it’s not super clear that it switched. It mentions Joel Turner is two time world champ (in solo and crew category), but someone might’ve misread and thought it was still talking about Adam Rupp and the rumor spread among fans.
Alternatively, I think I’ve also heard he got voted best beatboxer at some acapella competitions, so maybe people confused those with beatbox championships.
On his own website he mentions he doesn’t consider himself among the best beatboxers.

What impresses me is that he does one of these solos in the middle of every show in addition toproviding the vocal percussion for the rest of the show.

He's doing a different looper solo now, but he introduces this one as being ORAS by Saro when he performs it. Not all the fan recordings include that part, of course, but he does credit the original artist. I believe this arrangement is longer (and therefore more complex) than Saro's original, which has to fit into competition limits which Adam doesn't have to. For the Christmas tour the last couple years he's done a very Trans-Siberian Orchestra sounding version of Carol of the Bells. I'm not sure whether the new looper solo is his own creation or an arrangement of an existing beatbox solo.

He is actually performing a cover of 1 of ☆Saro's☆ loops from GBB 2017 semi-final against MB14, &, tho I don't deny Adam's skills when applied to Home Free, he's NO SARO. Saro is a world beat box champ for multiple GBB's & has performed on stages all over the world, honing his craft everytime he steps to the mic & MKII.
If you want to hear this song w/elegance, precision, & clarity performed by the man that actually invented this beat, watch MB14 vs. Saro, GBB 2017!!

IMHO, Adam Rupp is the best beatboxer - he's truly incomparable. There are other live videos of his 'drum solos'. For an extended version of his 'no-monica' watch their video "Working for a Living". BTW, he plays piano, drums, trumpet & whatever else he chooses to pick up. Great reaction to a great artist!

So he just copies a Saro routine with an objectively worse remix ?
And did he at least credit Saro ?

    • @lrfcowper

He does at every performance introduce it as ORAS by Saro. A lot of fan recordings just don't include that part
