Turkey’s government is urging for calm after violence against Syrian refugees broke out in the central Melikgazi region. Riots erupted after Turkish authorities arrested a Syrian man for allegedly sexually abusing a seven-year-old Syrian girl in the central city of Kayseri. More than 470 people have been taken into custody with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attributing the violence to opposition parties advocating for refugee returns. The case is a bit more complicated. A Syrian man living under temporary protection in Turkey raped a 5 year old Syrian baby girl. The police identified the rapist and went to where he was living to arrest him. The district was a Syrian ghetto and the Syrians living in the district resisted the police because they believe it is their internal matter and Turkish police has nothing to do with it. Of course the police did not accept this after which they started physically attacking the police officers seriously wounding them. The local community heard all about this and started protests. Obviously all this set the ground for provocations. Currently the Syrian rapist and several others are arrested and the local police is in control.
Can you imagine thinking you can be a law unto yourselves within another country? What in God's name is "internal matter" which the police is supposed to stay out of?

My Kurdish friend in Istanbul loathes Syrians and all Arabs.
And aren't there citizens of Turkey who were born in Syria? When I was in Turkey there was a section of town (many laundries, i.e. service businesses), walkable from the famous shopping street, that was populated by Syrians, many of whom were young men hanging around in groups on the street. I wasn't robbed but locals told me int as a risky place to go at night.
I suspect that the situation is more complex than this or any news group would indicate.
