• John Pai 존 배: Master's...
Born in 1937 in Seoul, Korea, John Pai was raised in a rural area near Ilsan and later moved to Seoul, where he lived until he moved to the United States in 1949. His family was deeply engaged in the political turmoil of the era. His father, a Presbyterian minister who carried out independence activities during the Japanese occupation of Korea, was in exile in the United States during the Second World War while the rest of the family remained in Korea. Pai recalls his early years in Ilsan as a period when he spent much of his time alone or with his grandmother, as his mother had warned him not to play with friends due to the risk of exposing his family’s pro-independence activities. Consequently, he remembers days of drawing while surrounded by nature, lying down and gazing at stars, as well as days filled with music--his sister playing the piano, and his mother (who was raised in Russia) singing Russian folk songs. At the end of the Second World War, the family relocated to the United States. However, with the outbreak of the Korean War, his father returned to Korea to engage in relief work, and his mother likewise returned to Korea shortly thereafter to help establish a school.
