  • In this closing keynote from #mtpcon San Francisco, product discovery coach Teresa Torres shares her insights on how product managers can co-create solutions with stakeholders and better manage expectations.
Teresa starts by pointing out that we all find comfort in getting the right answer. She points out that product managers typically advocate for their own point of view in meetings with stakeholders, and resist suggestions for change. When we’re asked to build something other than what we’ve suggested we complain to whoever will listen. It means that we create the problems we have with stakeholders. By only presenting the final answers we ask stakeholders to give their opinions about our answers, and not about our work, so it shouldn’t be surprising if they don’t agree with us.

@TeresaTorres Opportunity solution tree is such a great idea to communicate the product strategy to stakeholders. Also, this helps a product manager to mind map all the opportunities that can impact the outcome and clearly show the various options that stakeholders can vote for to make the product strategy address their specific needs.

I recently have started following Teresa Torres (and finally I write the right spelling in one go with right number of 'r' in right place :P ) and I can observe my mindset shift from a business analyst to product manager. Yet lot to learn and lot to experiment. Best take away is Opportunity-Solution tree about which she has mentioned in almost every seminar and it helped me organize and visualise my thoughts better way. Thankyou so much

    Teresa just gets it.
There are books that cover PM best practice. Useful but basically a compendium of everything good PMs tend to do.
There are other books like Cagan's "Inspired" which focus on what PM should be but don't connect the vision to the practice.
Teresa's book covers what to do, why do it and how to get through challenges.
I might look into hiring her as a product coach if i could be so lucky.
