One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. - Plato
But the catch is, if we do vote for one of the two parties we only offer them a legitimacy they do not deserve.
On one hand, if political parties don’t represent us then why should we vote for them.
Voting for the lesser of two evils doesn’t help. When the “lesser evil” gets your vote they have been offered a mandate to rule. They will take your vote, give you nothing in return and then demand it again in two years time.
In this way, voting for the lesser evil, will ironically only lead to more evil.
But, on the other hand if we don’t vote we are allowing those in power free reign.
Solution?
Third parties are locked out of the system. So that’s a very hard road.
And, as a nation, we have been convinced to hate our neighbour, so it’s difficult to bring people together to fight on issues we agree on.
There is no easy answer but voting once every 2 - 4 years and hoping the party we have voted for is going to do what they have promised is clearly not the way to go.

I can't understand the blind loyalty to ANY party. I constantly challenge all of my ideas as much as I possibly can out of fear of just being wrong. I've found that I definitely lean conservative but every single day I question why I lean that way and after challenging my own ideas and having opinions that lean both ways on the political spectrum for years I'm comfortable in my ideas and can give a factual, coherent explanations to my beliefs.

Sadly for most people, political leanings are more akin to team sports than something they actually rationally or intellectualy consider where they align.
That holds somewhat true, but mostly only on the left. Van is a perfect example of how people end up being right leaning. I doubt anyone wants to be on the team of the racist, so I can't see many jumping on the right wing bandwagon 'just cuz' uk. On the left, it's about following the crowd.

I don’t think we need to put labels on communities. What is wrong with saying everything you said without saying black and indigenous. It’s your community only. When I was in school and younger they taught us to be color blind and now people argue to make color everything and it’s not. Some communities are underserved and we should all help each other cause at the end of the day we’re Americans above all.
We are going to have unity and then we will change the world, it won't be easy but it will be done.

My wife is having to file for disability, and one of the questions the lady asked was who did she vote for, so that shows you what they are fishing for if you get approved or not. It shouldn't make a difference who you voted for, if you can't work due to medical reasons than you can't work period.

I know my wife Hass to be careful about what she posts on social media. There are people at her job that have lost their jobs because of their vocal views on certain forms of politics. My son, who served in the Navy, also hast to be very careful about his social media presence. There too they are trying to get rid of those who don’t have the same Wolk philosophies. Social media is both a curse and a blessing. You would think that our freedom of speech would be more protected with social media, but in actuality it hurts us.

After so many black folks lost their lives after emancipation because the Democrats ruined what Lincoln was gonna do after emancipated passed. How many more years went by before they were actually allowed to vote? In THEIR own country? The country that they fought in world wars and other foreign wars to protect American. The whole Trump thing has caused me tons of headaches. I've have family and friends turn on me because I voted for him. Threw me away with the trash without asking me why I voted for him. Funny how quick they realized that they threw me away over a person they thought was the answers to find out it isn't working out they way they wanted.
I give that guy respect, he let her speak without interrupting, that's rare these days.

What he is doing I was doing at his age. I had my political beliefs but it was shaped probably more by the media that I watched. And then there come a point I realize what these politicians do and say has a huge effect on my daily life. And it opened up my eyes to the amount of corruption that the politicians in the lobbyist and political activist have in Washington. Politicians go to Washington and get filthy rich that's a problem. Truman said the only way you can get rich in politics is if you're corrupt. Politicians have created laws and methods and the system that funds their life and their lifestyle. Really sad there was a time when I thought they were civil servants, wrong! We need term limits and honest people in Washington. We deserve better than what we've got
I am curious. When you went to school were you encouraged to study current events and to be an educated voter? I graduated in 1970 and it was a part of our education. I am thinking this another educational failure currently.
@@janetg5176 best I can remember when I went to school we were taught more of how our government work and what each Department of government was and how each function of government worked on a national level and a local level. We never discussed left or right issues with exception of slavery the Revolutionary War the Civil War and the two World Wars. But just the history of it it never was a Democrat or Republican thing. It was more of grow up be a good citizen become a civil servant volunteer or run for office and do the right thing. The teachers who taught us grew up in an error that government was to be trusted budget was expected to be balanced and that both parties Democrat and Republican wanted the same thing they just had different ideas of how to get there. We will talk the capitalism and our form of government and how it worked can only function true and honest if civil servants served with honor. It was a sense of Duty not power or Revenge Factor.. it was just basically your civics class. We did not discuss the issues of the day and time we were living in. I know people who've known each other their whole life and not know if the other was a Republican or Democrat. They never discussed who they were voting for and why and if they did very seldom. Too many dishonest and corrupted people become politicians these days. We need civil servants not politicians and we need term limits.

I live in Jackson, and as an independent, I’ve had interest in a number of “3rd party candidates”, but I only bother to vote in local elections, because TN is going red regardless, which affords us a somewhat unique ability to truly vote our conscience. I voted Libertarian in 2016, not because I really liked Gary Johnson, but because I wanted to help the Libertarian party try and get to the 15% threshold required to actually become federally recognized as a political party. The main thing that happens is expanded ballot access and receiving federal funds to use for campaigning. Yes, the federal government actually provides funding for the campaigns of recognized parties. It’s a mechanism to keep the two party system. Trump actually did something for which he doesn’t get credit, probably because a lot of the establishment republicans aren’t happy about it happening. He has made the Republican Party more representative of Conservative Libertarians. That’s one of the reasons that when liberals are bitching about “the other side”, they now associate republicans and libertarians.

I know exactly what you mean. I am Canadian living on the coast of B.C. I would cast my vote and hope for the best without any research. All politicians were liars and not found accountable even when caught. However; when I saw T run for office, I took notice as the elites in America went insane. Cathy Griffin a supposed comedian walking with an effigy of T severed head. I was appalled. Then started noticing an agenda being played out. I started research after the planned demic hit. Did not like what I found. It is not good for humanity as a whole. It is biblical. For the record I never voted for the turdo.

So many of us don't pay attention when we are young. I'm 54 and we never talked politics at home. I honestly have only begun to understand so much since the plandemic and I was home and able to pay attention more! Heck I voted Obama twice becuz I believed in "hope & change". I cringe at the thought of it now! I am so thankful to see the younger generation being so vocal now and will be forever grateful to them.

Kait is actually an extreme case study in how people can change their minds as that one guy pointed out. She was an atheist for many years, but her husband is super Catholic. He never pushed her to go to Mass, but always offered. When her beloved cat got sick, he suggested they pray together. They did and the cat got better. This made her question her stance on God and start ask questions to people of all different religions. She landed on Catholicism. Now she's an avid Catholic with her husband, baby, and new baby on the way.

I work in a small mom and pop store and talk to people all the time that don’t know why they voting for the people there voting for. Seriously. I don’t care who you vote for as long as you know why you for that person Or why you don’t like a candidate!

I think a questionaire of at least 10 questions should be for everyone to at least know something about civics since their decisions can effect the lives of over 300 million people. I don't think people should vote just to be able to say they voted. I watched videos where people don't know who the VP is and they're voting give me a break/

When I was young politics was not a big topic. And I did think differently about a lot of things. But now it's out of control with politics and who's side I'm on. I'm on my family's side and friends with anyone. And politics is the last thing I care about, it only causes drama.

I think most people don’t educate themselves on the people and the policies the candidates have….if people would just think for THEMSELVES and not just go along with their community. Our vote is our only voice…..use it WISELY….
