like all the other movies they've done if memory serves? Part of this is to take potshots at the mouse and give all those people lambasting ridiculous PC revisions of beloved classics something to rally around. And fair play to them. Nobody else seems to have the balls to do so. and Shapiro is right that while some of these IPs are technically open to the public, they're Disney property in the eyes of many but they insist on dribbling over themselves and trying to lead the culture rather than knowing their place and simply providing people entertainment.
@@TheAcad3mic I'm sorry, but this is complete polarized thinking. We don't need something to "rally around" _in opposition to_ whatever feces Disney puts out. We can just ignore it. Creating something that's the opposite doesn't serve anybody, the only thing it does is create a polarized duality. This DW film isn't about careful storytelling, about telling a classic folklore story in a beautiful, well-crafted manner. It's about cashing in on people's (rightful) disdain of what Hollywood regurgitates. We really need to get over this left vs right, blue vs red, white vs black paradigm, IF we want genuinely good things and not just reactions to something that "the other side" has put out.

Can you imagine if it was just any dude from the daily wire? Like Ben Shapiro? "Let's say, hypothetically, you hired a hunts man, to go and murder Snow white? " I wasn't even gonna watch either of the films but if the daily wire does that, or bring in Peterson, I might actually be interested.
I think they haven't made an adaptation of 12 dancing princesses because they know they can't compete with the Barbie version from the early 00s, a niche masterpiece of filmmaking 😆
And we dance and we dance in an endless flow In the grace of a perfect design Stepping out of the dark and into the glow And the whole world will see when we shine We can shine

In the Grimms' version of Snow White or Snowdrop, the prince didn't save her by kissing her. He had his attendants carry her casket; one tripped and during the jostling Snow hacked up the poison apple so she woke up. The queen tried to kill her 3 times with different disguises--but the first two times the dwarves saved her. In the end, the queen is forced to wear red hot iron shoes at Snow's wedding party as a form of execution. I don't think the DW will incorporate those elements, though a dark gritty retelling would be fresh and new. Snow White goes Grim Dark. Make it more like Game of Thrones. Why not The Twelve Dancing Princesses? How about Green Snake, The Brother and the Sister, Iron Hans, The Blue Bird, The White Deer, Riquet with the Tuft, The Long-Nosed Dwarf, The White Cat, The Twelve Huntsmen, Grace and Derek? None of these have been done. There's a lot of unused material even among the French and German folktales.
I'm curious what liberties the Daily Wire will take. The Grimms Snow White is in the public domain, not the Disney version. So they can have seven dwarfs, but if they name them Dopey, Happy, etc.. they are infringing on Disney's creation.
_"How about Green Snake, The Brother and the Sister, Iron Hans, The Blue Bird, The White Deer, Riquet with the Tuft, The Long-Nosed Dwarf, The White Cat, The Twelve Huntsmen, Grace and Derek? None of these have been done."_ I dunno about anyone else, but I've never heard of any of those, which is probably why they've never been done.... And precisely why they SHOULD be done. Cast my vote for "deep dive" fairy tales no one knows or has ever heard of.
It also may be overhyped because Brett cooper’s audience will love it because they love her. I don’t say that to diminish her in any way. She was a child star and she’s studied acting for a while and she’s very talented, however like you said this may be overhyped due to the reactionary stuff but also due to her big audience from her TH-cam channel.
I mean that's just a part of the reason why they selected her for the role anyway, it's not like Disney does any different: Ema Watson for " Beauty and The Beast" for example, these people are chosen because they have a following and they hope some of that audience will see the movie.
I'd say that's the biggest mistake of the movie. How is anyone supposed to see anyone other than Brett Cooper on screen? I can't see Snow White, the character, I see Brett Cooper in cosplay
My question is which of the two live action Snow Whites will be cringier. I am trapped between eagerly awaiting and dreading the releases of both films. I would love a Snow White closer to the spirit of the original animated film and/or the original fairytale, but I doubt either will match the quality of a lot of the retelling I’ve read.
I think Daily Wire's Snow White would be more likely to be bland than cringe. They're probably just going to do the original fairy tale with no additions as part of the statement they're trying to make. I hope they include the red hot shoes the evil queen had to dance in.
@@annagrace2746 "bland" is a matter of perspective. I've seen Daily Wire fan guys drooling over the casting of Brett Cooper as Show White 🤪 -- and consoling each other that she's engaged. 😳😳🤣
I probably wouldn't see either of them regardless of who made which. I'm a grown ass adult, and not one of those Disney adults. But I could see the appeal of seeing a classic brought to life. Unfortunately, I doubt either one will be true to the original. Even in the Daily Wire teasers I think Snow White is riding a horse and engaging in some form of battle or something. Which is fine. Strong women, woohoo, yadda yadda, whatever. But that's a completely different story. If I wanted to watch something with a woman fighting, I would watch something else. So unfortunately I don't think we will be getting a true Snow White movie and both will be "reimaginings". If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
@@Terryterryterryterryterry I think you're mistaking the Pendragon cycle teasers and the Snow White one. Brett Cooper's in both, and I think the horse riding thing is the Pendragon cycle series
“We’re sick and tired of Disney for constantly being uncreative and reactionary and pandering and remaking all these stories all the time! We need to do something!” “Cool! What’re you gonna do?” “We’re gonna be uncreative and reactionary and pandering and remake the stories! Just…you know, from OUR side.”
Kids stories are always best when they have darkness in them. Watership Down is a great example of that. It is the darkness that highlights and emphasizes the goodness and the light. It also reflects the world more accurately and kids can tell.
Definitely, it's always the stories with darker elements that stuck with me when I was growing up. Whether they were more realistic like Brother Bear or overt like Howl's Moving Castle
I grew up on Disney movies but my daughter doesn’t like them, she had her tangled and frozen phase but she feels more excited by Coraline etc. I feel there’s a market for children like her that could bring more darker (more original) fairytales to the screen. I’d also love to watch them with her.
It doesn't look inspired, especially when they use Disney's character designs and the music from Willy Wonka. Kinda what I'd expect from Conservative Media: they know how to use After Effects for fancy logos and obviously have access to a stock footage library. They can record basic nature shots, but that's about it. I don't think "make the opposite of woke version" is creative enough. The new one looks bad, but the old one wasn't perfect. (Although the animation was revolutionary). If it's not even animated, what's the point? Makes me want to make a third version. Maybe they'll learn a good lesson that they need to be a little deeper than just wanting to "own the libs."
*Yes, because it's still not fair to the women.* Define "fair". Explain why polygamy is unfair when both parties consent. No one is coercing the women to marry the polygamist. The women are not cognitively compromised. Which aspect of polygamy is unfair? The women knew what they were getting into. If they thought it was an unfair arrangement, they wouldn't have accepted the deal in the first place.
How you managed to deduce the movie's "creativity" from a single barebones teaser is beyond me. And I suggest you go watch the production diaries of the Pendragon Cycle if you sincerely believe conservative media can only "record basic nature shots."
The Daily Wire movie seems to have been created solely to spite Disney's politics, which isn't something to be celebrated. The entire problem with modern Disney remakes in the first place is that they're being created out of political spite rather than an a genuine interest in storytelling.
sometimes you have to take a teleological approach to these things. results matter. if Disney has warped into a propaganda machine, and someone has created an anti-propaganda machine whose actual output brings us back round to some people just making normal movies... then that's a good thing.
@@TheAcad3mic Nah, I'm a man of principle. Daily Wire isn't an anti-propaganda machine, it's another propaganda machine. And a rushed mockbuster created purely for spite is not a "normal movie".
I feel like Disney is less on making political spite in films but more for capitalising off those politics in the laziest/shallowest way possible. Remember, when it comes to companies, they want their cake and eat it too so that's often why it's added. Not to spite anyone, but to capitalise off it
You're exactly right. Not to mention Brett Cooper wasn't exposed to Disney growing up because her mom thought it was evil. This movie wouldn't hold any sentiment or nostalgia to her. That being said, I did like Run Hide Fight by the Daily Wire which was an original movie. Not surprisingly, it had overwhelming bad reviews from the official critics which is just that side's bias. It's a shame that both have to do it
The point of Daily Wire making that movie is to make a non political movie that they can enjoy. People who are not right wing were already complaining about Disney Snow White live action so there is nothing about making a better political movie.
I have this idea of what if snow white is an actual child. In the original movie she is 14 after all. The idea of this little girl yearning for love and companionship makes sense. It would be such an endearing story if the dwarfs are some sort of parental figures and the prince was her childhood friends in a sort of puppy love.
My thing is , they dont care about disney princesses or Barbie until they deem it wrong or woke .Like I can tell for sure thst they cant tell all the barbie eras and movies but hated the Barbie movie cause it was Woke . They took the spotlight from actual barbie fans to provide criticsm toward the Margot Robbie movie
The only snow white I care about is the original version in which Snow White tortures her stepmother to death in a horrific act of revenge. Despite their names, the Brothers Grimm heavily sanitised the fairy tales even before Disney
@@redmaple1982 The Grimm brothers' original compilation describes how the stepmother was punished, but if I remember correctly it wasn't specifically Snow White that gave her the punishment. Also, there's a huge difference in standing up for yourself and giving in to your bloodthirsty desire for revenge.
@@redmaple1982 The version he mentions is pretty much the Grimm version, except I think Dworkin didn't remember it wasn't exactly Snow White who took revenge (or at least it's implied that the stepmother got punished, but it wasn't specified that it was Snow White). I can see how it's more satisfying from that perspective.
Probably my favorite Cinderella adaption ever! I love that they chose sincerity over cynicism, and that the character was sweet and virtuous but at the same time, feisty and intelligent! I do think there were a lot of Marxist undertones in the film (gotta love how she tells the prince thieves cannot help but be thieves due to their lack of education, still doesn’t stop her from giving an Apple to the face of the prince when he tries to steal her fathers horse while screaming that he’s a thief and she’s going to teach him a lesson😂) but I still love it! Gorgeous costumes and such great character development, not just with Cinderella and the prince, but with the stepmother , stepsisters and “fairy godmother” as well! The score was flawless and there was so much chemistry between all the actors! But I still cringe with the “I can still whip you” part in the end😂
@@amazingbecka1it’s not Marxist themes, because the era of the movie taking place…was a true time of peasants and royalty and the dichotomy was different. I am no fan of Brett Cooper, but she's a very pretty girl. So i feel like it's quite an accomplishment that they managed to make her look at least 10 years older with that lipstick colour coupled with the hairstyle. I am fairly sure that the Daily Wire can afford a proper stylist. They obviously rushed it way too much, so it will be meh at best, horribly cheesy at worst. Looking forward to the critique video, after you watch it so that we don't have to 😂
THANK YOU. I thought the very same. I watch Brett, simply, out of boredom. She is cute, and I think she is good at her job. However, the second I saw that Snow White Trailer - especially, as a former hairstylist who dabbled working in Hollywood/entertainment.. It all looked so bad. Apparently, Snow White’s hair is long, originally. The way they did it looked so awful - as well as her make-up. I really was disappointed in the overall look, when it came to those two aspects, for sure. Hell, I bet her hair woulda looked cute in a faux-bob, kinda like Taylor Swift did at her Era’s Tour movie premier (hell, even Taylor’s hair, make-up, and dress could have been much better executed/chosen. She might as well have been wearing a quilt. Best example I could think of, however, lol). And with the quality of extensions and make-up, today.. There really is no excuse for the way she looked.
When it comes to the question of whether we need another live action remake, I might have an unpopular opinion. The reason why none of the remakes worked except Cinderella wasn’t just lack of respect to the source material. It was because the other films, except Maleficent, were from the Disney Renaissance. During the Walt Era, films were slow paced and now feel dated, they are good but there’s a lot of space to expand on the story without ruining it. They just had to take away the mice storyline from Cinderella and here they had half of the movie absolutely free to fill with new details, and to add new depth. Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella had a profound understanding of the 1950s Cinderella (I watched it after I wrote about the original movie in my paper and I was very impressed) and it expanded on this theme, which is why it’s a masterpiece. Maleficent took a different route and I personally find this disrespectful, but it still feels… Idk, symmetrical. But Disney Renaissance films don’t leave any space to fill in, they are written like modern blockbusters, there’s nothing you can add to it to make it better - you can only make a completely different film out of it. Aladdin was boring, and so was Beauty and the Beast. However, I did hope that it would work with Snow White. It had a potential. If only they weren’t afraid to stay true to the source material and dig deeper… 1937 Snow White is a great film, even despite being somewhat bland, and it’s essential for the film history. It could’ve been better even than Cinderella.
What about Jungle Book and Pete's dragon? Those were were also wonderful and very well received both by critics and audience others say they're better than the originals
Parlay for a secoind, why don't you just read them, there not that long and mainstream culture isn't ready for something that really feels like a folk story yet
LMAO I didn't know there are Americans that seriously believe they used to speak American English in the United Kingdom. It's unbelievable how deep the 'we are the norm' mindset is over there.
The Last Unicorn is probably the most effective memento mori piece for children and adults and it also manages to be one of the best fantasy/fairytale stories ever. Peter S. Beagle was truly a wonder and so is the movie.
Galatea: “Like if a Christian movie depicted all atheists as evil…” Me: “So like, God’s Not Dead.” (It’s honestly been weird watching Disney make a lot of the same storytelling mistakes that were iconic to Christian films, while some Christian filmmakers are starting to turn the corner into far more nuanced storytelling with the likes of The Chosen and the Wingfeather Saga.) PS I read the first half of the Pendragon Cycle in high school and loved them. As a result I have mixed feelings about the adaptation: beloved novels always run the risk of being ravaged by adaptation-whether it’s American or British original content.
Some good news: it appears as though a lot of the actors for _The Pendragon Cycle_ are British and/or attended acting college in England, so that should be a plus, as far as performance and accent goes.
The two older Snow White adaptions you mentioned both had Snow White take a more active role in her story too so Disney are doing the same thing James Corden did where they make out they're the first ones to do a more feminist retelling when it's been a thing for years
I went to a an Evangelical Christian junior high school and they had all the Pendragon books. It's been 20 years since I read them, but considering they are so overtly Christian, they're pretty badass and actually kinda gorey at times. The author is from my home state, but he did a ton of research into the Celtic legends of Arthur.
I see a certain beauty in the symmetry of two equally hideous movies with opposite yet equally cringey messages being released in the same time. Let's hope they won't let us down.
"Scary's not what I'm looking for, it just needs to feel subtle and magical" 'Numinous' is one of those words I overruse but I definitely think it applies here
Thank you for shouting out that guys' channel, I'm gonna go watch his video next. The original Disney Sleeping Beauty was really creepy in parts. The bit where she's being hypnotised to walk up the stairs and Maleficent is singing 'Aurora' in minor key with the suspenseful music gives me shivers. One of the best Disney scenes of all time.
Did the Daily Wire's Gina Carano movie make a huge cultural impact? I actually like the idea of a faithful retelling of this story. And yet, regardless of quality, DW's Snow White will be discussed for a short time after its release by a conservative niche, then forgotten by all.
I saw terror on the prairie. It's pretty dark and bleak, but not really conservative. Just normal (I mean it even had a strong female lead, but it showed her vulnerability- eg. There was a moment when under attack, she had to feed her infant. The fear i felt knowing how exposed you feel when breastfeeding a new infant, was palpable).
Honestly I’m just starved for good apolitical content with timeless and relatable messages. I’m crossing my fingers that the Daily Wire will really try to do this story justice. I was thinking about the Cinderella remake and how it took a relatively barebones story and added a bit more substance to it. Maybe DW will just take the original Snow White fairy tale and do something like that? I have hope that they will make something worth watching, but we shall see if they live up to it.
I think its both. Its not like any project is created in a vacuum. Some people probably truly have artistic hopes for the project, some people no doubt see an opening in the market and others are just in it for a paycheck. And no doubt there are going to be people who are a mix of any of these. I'm not planning on watching it because I never particularly cared about Snow White, even as a kid.
In regards to your reservations about The Pendragon Cycle. I would want to see if Andrew Klavan is involved. He is a very accomplished writer and he lived in England for decades. He's well read on the Arthurian Legends and Shakespeare and all things English literature. I would absolutely trust the project if it comes out that he was involved in the screenwriting because I know he would do it justice. I actually found your channel because of his takes on femininity which were very close to yours. I would check him out if you haven't.
So true I’d be shocked if they don’t have him on, but he might be focusing on his books. I know he has a really successful career in that area as of right now.
I think more competition for Disney can't hurt, they've been dropping the ball hard with these remakes and I always suspected they've been ramaking their classic fairytales because they want to be the owners of them, at least in the mind of Pop Culture.
Disney may want to own them in the mind of pop culture, but they also need to keep using their IP in projects in order to keep their rights to exclusivity
It's funny how they said they wanna tell the original fairy tale...cos I'm pretty sure they don't really, they wanna tell the original Disney version, these are people who would find the original versions of pretty much all fairy tales far too morally questionable to tell em, because like most people they've never actually read old fairy tales
Thank you! So sick of the way people talk about kids entertainment as if children only deserve subpar story telling. In an ideal world the only difference between something for kids and adults would be how delicately the issues and ideas are wrapped up.
Thank you so much for this video! You brought up basically the same things I'd been worried about... remaking a film with the intent of sticking to the source material is all well and good, but if you don't do anything new or creative with the project, it doesn't really feel like it's combating the lack of creativity or new ideas in Disney at all.
Let's be real. Disney's Snow White got popular because of the revolutionary ANIMATION (another thing conservatives always told me was immature). It's a work of artistry, and even that version is kind of boring now. No, getting some shots from a stock footage library isn't gonna cut it. This gives me flashbacks to when Conservatives would chuckle and tell me: "Why would you read something as badly written as Harry Potter? Why don't you read the CLASSIC fairy tales instead!" (as if they even knew what they were talking about). I actually read classic fairy tales, so I know that 1. It's not going to satisfy the same kind of literary experience at all. 2. They're not actually that perfect or enjoyable in most contexts unless you bring some creativity to them. They are bare bones. Nobody really sits back and reads the original Snow White over and over (let alone the less popular fairy tales) because it's not a riveting literary experience just because it's old. You have to be innovative with it.
Well, animation used to be revered because it was a new innovation in film, but now it's just devolved into fetishistic fan art freakishness. The appeal of fairytales is that they appear simple on the surface but have hidden depth and are vague/open-ended enough to be interpreted in different ways. They have a "mystique" about them that an overbearing entertainment brand like Harry Potter doesn't have. Ironically, everyone's desperate attempt to retell these stories has made all these adaptations fairly bland, and at this point just doing a straightforward adaptation would be more interesting 💀 Also...not a Harry Potter fan critiquing other works for "bare bones" writing...💀
@@welfare_king Oh, when was the last time you stayed up rereading the Brother's Grimm collection? Can you name any fairy tales besides the ones Disney adapted? Surely you must read them all the time then, and aren't just being an elitist in the TH-cam comment section.
I love your idea of what makes a great fairytale!! The Last Unicorn lives in my brain to this day. The harpy!!!! So creepy. And I loved movies like Secret of Nymh when I was younger too-the dark disturbing aspects of those movies were really interesting to me as an 8 year old.
I'm looking forward to the Pendragon cycle, that looks interesting, even as someone who never read the books. It'll probably be "made for TV" budget, but if its good its good. The "diaries" posted by them about them filming in Hungary are fun to watch.
Hi Galatea, I thoroughly agree with your opening gambit regarding ideological variety in media. There is a very much far left bias within the Western film industry, primarily Hollywood/Disney currently, but also within the UK, Canada, Australia etc. This kind of "activist" storytelling has resulted in not only the quality and variety of ideas and writing falling off a proverbial cliff, but seemingly anyone right of Stalin is denigrated and caricatured in very obnoxious and hyperbolic ways. Conservatives have been labelled as racists, sexists, mean spirited and selfish, when this is not the reality in most cases. I'm left leaning myself, and appalled at the tribalism in media and our culture nowadays. No wonder someone conservative has decided to take their toys and play on their own, and it highlights the current polarization within society in many Western nations today. I applaud any independent studios or filmmakers that try to buck Hollywood's monopoly on the film industry, be they liberal or conservative. We need people with different viewpoints and opinions to collaborate and create together, otherwise we will all lose out and art will suffer as a result.
Movies are already suffering. Marvel and Disney movies we're the only profitable films in theaters. All the "art" films don't make any money. If anything is to blame, blame capitalism, not left leaning ideology.
@@MrRayRockstar Not exactly. The top 3 highest grossing movies this year so far have been Barbie, Super Mario Bros and Oppenheimer - none of which are Marvel or Disney produced. Just shows original ideas or decently made movies can be successful. Trouble is, they aren't being made currently. All we get are lazy remakes of stories nobody wanted stuffed full of pandering ideology instead of well written characters and story arcs. And it's not always about money, it's about compelling filmmaking.
@andy2172 First, the Mario movie was not original or had well written characters or story arc. It was cute and intended for children, and that's great! Peaches was awesome! Barbie WAS a feminist movie, and Oppenheimer has a director with a cult following. I'm one. The 2 movies had an amazing ad campaign that worked miracles for them. That's not the norm. 12 months, 3 movies. That's still not good enough
@@MrRayRockstar "First", loving the sass. The Mario movie was an original screenplay, based on the origins of the brothers and how they ended up in the mushroom kingdom, produced by the head honcho of Nintendo himself, Miyamoto. So original movie, sold well. Barbie was also an original screenplay, and marketed itself as a fun, family movie, when it was actually feminist propaganda (as you yourself admitted). It's funny, because when many people on the right ranted about the heavy feminist undertones in Barbie, they were laughed at and told they were wrong by many leftists. Yet you have just admitted here, they were correct all along. Interesting. Oppenheimer was another original screenplay, although closely based on the book American Prometheus. You said no recent movies apart from Disney or Marvel sold well, I gave you 3, from 2023. Don't move the goalposts now.
Never existed. And never will exist. There's more creativity than there ever has been. Especially with the internet. Just gotta look. As far as main stream water cooler everyone is talking about it main stream? Yeah it's pretty formulaic. But if you don't mind going deeper than that I'm sure you'll be able to find stuff(yes it will be some type of politics involved) that you'll like
The only part of America that speaks with a more Elizabethan style of english is in the Appalachian mountains, particularly southern Appalachia. However, you'll find many similar words and cadence all throughout the mountain region. This part of America was largely isolated from the rest of country due to the difficult geography for most of American history, and as a result, their accents have been fairly preserved. For example, my grandma would have said something like, "Yins need to go on an' warsh up for supper. Then fetch the dishes and fix the table 'fore we eat."
It feels like what this business is doing is just copying the homework from everyone else around them and just changing it slightly so the teacher can't tell. All I know about them is they keep creating shows/movies that are just rip offs of more popular ones, and instead of hiding it like the old rip off companies do, they're proud of it.
I agree about Americans trying to tell British stories. They are generally very brash and not subtle at all. American comedy is also not funny at all. Their scents are really awful too.
For some reason the term Disney princess's is used generally to describe characters of mostly European folklore culture or fairytales. This removes any real value that cultural tales have, and to make them inclusive and multi racial absolutely destroys European culture
About the accent thing, Brett Cooper is getting trained in a proper accent with a voice coach. She might do fine since she is an actress. What concerns me is they stick everyone at Daily Wire in these movies, including Ben Shapiro and Jeremy Boering. Political opinions aside, I'm not sure these guys can act.
As much as I don't wish the DW snow white is horrible, it will make for very good meme content if it is horrible. So it seems like it's a win for DW either way.
The fact Brett announced her engagement in tandem with the Snow White project struck an odd chord with me. Cant put my finger on it exactly, but it made her feel even more of a peculiar media/entertainment industry contrivance than her unprecedented channel blow-up on Ben Shapiro's network...while looking like Ben Shapiro's female deep fake. I'm not suggesting her engagement is part of some PR ploy or anything lol. I actually enjoy Brett's content and even her persona, but she occupies some sort of uncanny valley in my mind and that only compounded her aura of surreality.
I predict that their movie will be overall fine, but it probably won't add much to the old one and if it does add to the old one, it'll be mostly virtue signaling. But that's just a prediction. I love how you describe that it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth because that's exactly how I feel. It feels like an opportunity taken by people who don't actually care about the movie and won't do it justice. Also, unpopular opinion: I would love to see a remake in which Snow White falls in love with a vampire prince who saves her from internal slumber by turning her into his vampire princess... I'm just throwing this out there, just a fun little re-imagining. I wouldn't market it for kids though.
I have no high hopes for the daily wire. They really seem to look at the world through the lens of woke or not woke. Looking at Disney and concluding that wokness is the problem, is such a shallow way of analysing the sitation. The problem is that Disney has a powerfull monopole in the film industry. American art has always been comercial, but it has reached parody levels of corporate, assembly line product.
This one is done in the vain of being true to the original Grimes fairytale , I don't know what your referring to when you mention their artistic motivations , terror on prairie and shut in was solid and didn't focus too much on being on the nose politically or so to speak , I don't think any of their projects suffered like your saying because they were produced by conservatives
This is the part of western right wing politics that Galatea hasn't quite discovered yet, it seems. That's really how they filter everything in the US.
It kills me, because there are lots of creative people with actual visions they could fund if they just browsed kickstarter or instagram, but nooooooo, the world needs another basic version of snow white.
People also tend to forget that some of those stories, like snow-white or the little mermaid, are old folk tales. These and many other stories have been around for hundreds of years and they really matter to the people that they belong to. So if you use that source material to get across some political or social message, you're bound to genuinely offend many people.
18:45 thank you!!!! I think people are ignoring what she said and are just trying to protect their non destroyed childhood. It is hella weird how that story starts.
Have you read Tanith Lee's White As Snow? Its a darker, more adult blend of the original fairy tale and the myth of Demeter and Persephone. Its not a masterpiece but would have made for a more interesting adaptation than whatever Disney and Daily Wire are doing
I don't think it's that weird, we politicized kissing but really it's just an intimate act and has noting to do with sex or romance, you can try it at home if your not a coward or listen to science call Shakespeare gay because to knights do it as final act human closeness before they die in I think Richard the 3rd
I’m not bothered by the Daily Wire making their own version of Snow White. I’m irritated by the sentiment of making their own version in response to Disney getting it “wrong” in their eyes. It’s like “stop woke-ifying the classics by brown washing the characters and making them diverse! We’ll show you how to do live action by keeping the characters as they were! Stop trying to erase white people”. Now, hear me folks: I’m a conservative. I don’t hate the Daily Wire. And no, I don’t like turning white characters into black or Latino for the sake of superficial, cliche representation. I had NO plans on seeing the black little mermaid because, as a black person who thoroughly enjoyed the original when I was a child, and never felt like i needed to be white to beautiful, I don’t need a black mythical creature with dreads to show me I can be a princess, too! So, please don’t. However, as a subscriber to the Daily Wire’s channel and being familiar with how reactionary they can be when it comes to pouncing on anything the Left does, I see this as less of them adding to their profile of Hollywood alternatives, and more to playing to their base’s kneejerk, and quite frankly LEFTIST reactionary habits of saying “you wouldn’t like it if we did that to your beloved characters”. The what aboutism, if the shoe were on the other foot, tit for tat behavior is getting so old.
I really don’t agree. They’ve been adding their own Hollywood alternatives for a while now. They have their own kids shows, documentaries on conservative topics, a couple of movies, and now a tv show for adults. Also all of DailyWire is a Hollywood alternative. It’s conservative commentators on one “network”. This is the only one that’s blowing up because they’re “facing off with” Disney. They can be reactionary but most times they aren’t, it’s just their reactionary stuff that makes headlines because viewers want to talk about that more. A great example is this video.
@@sweetxjc I don’t see what you’re disagreeing with. I know their network is an alternative and I know they’ve been making box office/Hollywood alternatives for a while. That’s why I said, this movie seems more knee jerk and reactionary and less like a legitimate addition to their catalogue. What I don’t like is the sentiment that they have to do this to clean up the mess Disney made by casting a latino as Snow White and quirky looking diverse folks as the dwarves. That’s so cheap to me. It’s tit for tat and immature. I mean, aside from her being slightly browner than the character, Rachel Ziegler doesn’t look too dissimilar from Snow White. The shape of her face, her brows, the dark hair- it could work. The problem is, 1) she’s super annoying, and 2) people are so caught up in this culture war, that we can’t even see how she might’ve been a decent pick if we’re going off of looks. It’s not like when they casted Zoe Saldana to play Nina Simone. That was wild because they had to put makeup and prosthetics on her to humble her features. That was crazy. I also hate cheap attempts to represent perceived “under represented groups”. I don’t agree at all with Disney’s push to reimagine all of their characters just so black and Latino children feel better about themselves. I resent that sentiment, for sure. I, for sure, don’t think it should be done to the detriment of white people. However, if we set the reason of representation aside for a minute, Hollywood has been using all sorts of wild people to play characters they have little to no ethnic/racial relation to. At least not apparently. Then there was black face, which we could just say was satire, but still. So, I think all of this is cringe. The demand for cheap representation The reactionary hissy fits All of it is an L in my book.
@bronxkies Love your points. I wish they'd write or adapt original stories about black and Latino people rather than race-swapping. I've read that the director of the live action The Little Mermaid heard Chloe Bailey's voice at an award show and wanted her to be Ariel, but went through auditioning process with hundreds of other women before deciding she was the best for the job. Unfortunately in this extremely divisive political climate and Disney's recent history of desperately trying to be progressive all the time it backfired. They made it about representation plus the CGI looked terrible. The Cinderella TV remake in the 90's with Brandy and Whitney Houston was very successful so color-blind casting or race-swaping has worked, but not in the 2020's.
I'd put money on DW's Snow White being trash. But no matter how trash it is, they'll be able say they made a better Snow White than Disney. Win win scenario
As an American with some pretty deep ties back to England and Northern Ireland, our folk tales here are no different. We sing and tell stories about not only the brutality of our heroes like Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie but also their fairly gruesome ends that only added to the legend. I heard workmen up from the Carolinas talking about The White Doe, supposedly the ghost of Virginia Dare, the first white child born in British America, who disappeared with the rest of the Roanoke colony. The Iroquois indians from my area also have some gruesome tales of Hiawatha defeating a witch and her pet cannibal. Pretty scary and magical!
Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses was a good adaption, and I remember the video game being more fun than it had a right to be. (You know, I think that most big name conservative speakers didn't grow up with early 2000s little girl media, and it shows. Because there were actually a LOT of creative adaptions of fairy tales from various franchises.)
I know you love children's literature, but on the theatrical side, I would love to hear your analysis of Bluey. It's got that passionate, good storytelling that even adults enjoy. I think it'd be really interesting to hear your thoughts on it!
One project you might want to look into is Jonathan Pageau's retelling of Snow White, Snow White and the Widow Queen. He plans on retelling a few fairy tales from the symbolic perspective. Jonathan is an icon carver for the Orthodox Church but he does not shy away from the darker symbolism of literature.
There is a market out there for conservative movies. Since 80% of blockbusters nowadays are woke in one way or another. I personaly prefer korean and japanese movies. They are not bogged down by either ideology.
On fairy tales: Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are actually ancient religious ideas Snow White is called that not because of her skin but because she is a virgin and white is the color of virginity she represents the Virgin Spring Goddess that comes out of winter this is why she is Frozen in a death like State and is awakened by the act of procreation that is a kiss so that she can become fertile
My ears pricked up when you said they're doing an Arthurian thing bc you're right in that there's dozens of them but we haven't had a good once since BBC Merlin 😂 Although I've heard The Winter King is supposed to be good
@@erinrhianne Arthur and Merlin had a classic dynamic. I've had a few friends like Arthur, so I thought it was particularly funny at some parts. The 2012 era were good times though, lol.
The first problem with the Disney remake of Snow White is that Rachel Ziegler is objectively not as beautiful as Gal Godot. The fundamental premise of the story is, therefore, invalid. It is hilarious that the advertisement before this video was for the Daily Wire's comedy "Lady Ballers".
I was raised evangelical Christian but have always disliked Christian films because they are basically sermons wrapped in bow. Now, for the same reason, i dislike most modern films and shows because they are the exact same thing, only instead of christianity they are preaching "the message," as the drinker says. I have 2 children and we have watched some of the shows on BentKey and they are pretty good. Same with Angel Tv and their show The Wingfeather Saga (tuttle twins is also hilarious and educational but has a distinctly libertarian and anti-communist slant). I just want people to tell good stories, and if its is a show for prepubescent kids, to keep it age appropriate. When i say age appropriate, i dont mean squeaky clean. Keep the dark and creepy, it is important for kids to face the dangers of the world in safety, that is part of the point of fairy tales. I mean less lies about the world and identity. Good fairy tales presented the truth under the fantastic. And you can tell truth from lies and propaganda, as an adult, but kids dont yet have that ability to fully see the differences. And I agree with The Last Unicorn. Its one of our favorites. Personally, while i wish they were doing an original story, i do get the logic behindd going head to head with disney, especially announcing Snow White on the 100th anniversary of disney. It generates the buzz.
As much as both version look plain bad, Disney's version is done out of pure stupidity but the Daily Wire one is done clearly out of spite and pettiness. If Disney wants to screw up yet again, let them but why spend a few million or however much the film is costing just to pat yourself on the back and say "look, we did it better". Disney is far from their glory days and are going there fast but The Daily Wire's validation antic just looks pathetic.
I’m excited for Daily wires fairytales! They’re doing multiple Grimm stories as well. Don’t try to rewrite another authors stories just recreate you own.
There’s nothing wrong with putting your own spin on an existing story. The problem lies with treating your audience like they’re stupid and changing the meaning or symbolism behind the original story to push an agenda.
I watched "The Last Unicorn" first as a young kid. Both then and now, having watched it a few more times since, it remains, in my opinion, an underrated masterpiece. Everything about it is so memorable and mesmerizing: the music, the themes, the top notch voice actors involved, and several scenes that I can only describe as powerful and impactful.
I like what seems to a reasonable perspective when analyzing pop media and societal issues, from what I've seen so far in a few of your videos. I'm subscribing and I'm looking forward to the content you release in the future!
It’s definitely a cash grab they know that they will get high quantity demand and demand from making this movie 🍿. The reason why these grifters are aggrandizing this movie plus making this movie is because they will see an elasticity of total, marginal and net revenue go up ⬆️
Your opinions are so similar to mine, it's almost scary. I often times have the more unpopular opinions that don't fit neatly into right or left or mainstream talking points, so coming across someone else who thinks similarly to me is a breathe of fresh air. Not trying to sound snobby or pretentious or anything though lol.
I miss this type of content from you! You're one of the best TH-camrs for a good film analysis! I'm no fan of the Dailywire, but I look forward to seeing how their Snow White compares to Disney's. The lead actress does give me more Snow White vibes than Miss Weird, Weird. Hope the Daily Wire explores some darker elements of the fairy tale and pays homage to the revenge scene in the Grimm's version. Would love to see a film critique when both movies come out! 🙏
The twelve dancing princesses has got a movie, a German one and it's beautiful! Germany has a long tradition of making fairy tale live actions. "Sonntagsmaerchen" - Sunday fairy tales are on TV every week, it's a huge catalogue. There's so much the rest of the world is missing out on. You'd love them Galatea.
I'm actually really sad that the new Disney Snow White looks like it's going to be such a dumpster fire. Honestly, after Zegler's comments, I rewatched the original, I was trying to figure out what was so bad and 'weird' about it. Sure, it was a different time, Snow White was a different archetype of femininity (understandable when you realize what Walt and other people in that generation grew up with - the 'lost innocence' of the World Wars fresh in their formative years) but the story itself is...fine? Actually very charming? There's nothing 'weird' about it more so than any other fairy tale? I keep hoping Disney will return to the vibe of the live-action Cinderella, but every live-action I've seen from them has just let me down more and more. I genuinely was crossing my fingers that they'd do the first film they ever made justice since it's such a big deal to their history as a company. The prediction of 'Disney's Folly' really does seem to have come true at last. Also if Bentkey wAS going to do a Snow White film...casting Brett Cooper was an awful idea. Hold real auditions, good lord, don't just grab the nearest woman under contract. Do they think kids will start watching the rest of her content if they see her in a pretty fantasy movie?
She's an actress though. It's likely she was hired in the first place for this express reason, and she was doing culture commentary to keep her busy and build her profile
What's *weird* about it is that Snow White isn't a femboss epically owning all the men in hand-to-hand combat. It's not complicated, modernity hates anything that's good and pretty. Everything must be ugly, including women's personalities.
You're so likeable, listening to you talking and talking and talking feels like you're my little sister, haha! It's realy nice to take a break from the depressing news while working :)

Not all sequels are bad
like all the other movies they've done if memory serves?

It would be great to make a comical retelling with lots of satire
On those grounds, the Hello Kitty Snow White is more accurate than any other version out there. XD
@@YazzyFairy oh, please no, no, no, no
I'm curious what liberties the Daily Wire will take. The Grimms Snow White is in the public domain, not the Disney version. So they can have seven dwarfs, but if they name them Dopey, Happy, etc.. they are infringing on Disney's creation.

And precisely why they SHOULD be done.
Cast my vote for "deep dive" fairy tales no one knows or has ever heard of.
On the topic of American adaptations of fairy tales - Tolkien didn't want Disney to get their hands on his work for that exact reason
And I agree with regards to kids' media - if you watch older media for kids, it's often surprisingly dark and complex, not just happy la-la stuff

At least in my peer group growing up, Tim Burton's works were so cool bc of how grim they were
Shoutout to your daughter for spotting the scam early.
*Yes, because it's still not fair to the women.*
Define "fair".
I wonder what excuses you're going to use to avoid the question this time. Another midterm? Dog ate your comment?

NOW THAT I'D PAY TO SEE it would make the danger and the witch feel like actual stakes because it be much scarier for a kid

The only snow white I care about is the original version in which Snow White tortures her stepmother to death in a horrific act of revenge. Despite their names, the Brothers Grimm heavily sanitised the fairy tales even before Disney

Probably my favorite Cinderella adaption ever! I love that they chose sincerity over cynicism, and that the character was sweet and virtuous but at the same time, feisty and intelligent! Gorgeous costumes and such great character development, not just with Cinderella and the prince, but with the stepmother , stepsisters and “fairy godmother” as well! The score was flawless and there was so much chemistry between all the actors! But I still cringe with the “I can still whip you” part in the end😂

It all looked so bad.
Apparently, Snow White’s hair is long, originally.
The way they did it looked so awful - as well as her make-up.
I really was disappointed in the overall look, when it came to those two aspects, for sure.

Well said.
What about Jungle Book and Pete's dragon? Those were were also wonderful and very well received both by critics and audience others say they're better than the originals
The Daily Wire are the LAST people I want doing traditional depictions of folk and fairy tales lmao
Galatea: “Like if a Christian movie depicted all atheists as evil…”
Me: “So like, God’s Not Dead.”
(It’s honestly been weird watching Disney make a lot of the same storytelling mistakes that were iconic to Christian films, while some Christian filmmakers are starting to turn the corner into far more nuanced storytelling with the likes of The Chosen and the Wingfeather Saga.)
PS I read the first half of the Pendragon Cycle in high school and loved them.
I loved his Song of Albion trilogy.
Very cool maybe I will read. It’s nice to hear there’s Christian books in different settings

Gina did a movie with DW?
@@opticalraven1935 Exactly.
one could say that none of the Disney live action remakes make any huge cultural impact.
@@opticalraven1935Yeah, it's a western called Terror on the Prairie. It's pretty bad.
One "fairy" tale I would love to see is Pied Piper of Hamelin. There are so many great old stories and fairy tales to adapt
Look, however you feel about Ben Shapiro, it took a lot of courage for him to dress in drag as Snow White. Im just saying.
Have you watched any of their other films?
DW will probably just rely on their fanbase and the hate for Disney's snow white to boost them.
I hope I'm wrong though.
Disney's Cinderella from 2015 was nice.. compared to all the woke stuff..
Lol imagine thinking that the Daily Wire would produce actual art
I think its both. Its not like any project is created in a vacuum. Some people probably truly have artistic hopes for the project, some people no doubt see an opening in the market and others are just in it for a paycheck. And no doubt there are going to be people who are a mix of any of these.
I'm not planning on watching it because I never particularly cared about Snow White, even as a kid.
Walking away from manosphere shills, thanks for the enthralling content
In regards to your reservations about The Pendragon Cycle. I would want to see if Andrew Klavan is involved. He is a very accomplished writer and he lived in England for decades. He's well read on the Arthurian Legends and Shakespeare and all things English literature. I would absolutely trust the project if it comes out that he was involved in the screenwriting because I know he would do it justice.
I actually found your channel because of his takes on femininity which were very close to yours. I would check him out if you haven't.
I enjoy listening to Klavan as well. Have you seen the filming diaries they've posted from Hungary? fun to watch.
The worst part is they can afford to mess up because of their name.
Bit old for Harry Potter and I grew up reading Terry Brooks fantasy 🤷♂️
@@hengineer All the girl characters sucked in 1970s high fantasy. I can see why Harry Potter had more appeal to teenagers when it came out.
@@lunalee3021 🤷♂️ Fair enough
Well, animation used to be revered because it was a new innovation in film, but now it's just devolved into fetishistic fan art freakishness.
The appeal of fairytales is that they appear simple on the surface but have hidden depth and are vague/open-ended enough to be interpreted in different ways. They have a "mystique" about them that an overbearing entertainment brand like Harry Potter doesn't have.
Ironically, everyone's desperate attempt to retell these stories has made all these adaptations fairly bland, and at this point just doing a straightforward adaptation would be more interesting 💀
Also...not a Harry Potter fan critiquing other works for "bare bones" writing...💀
@@welfare_king Oh, when was the last time you stayed up rereading the Brother's Grimm collection? Can you name any fairy tales besides the ones Disney adapted? Surely you must read them all the time then, and aren't just being an elitist in the TH-cam comment section.

If anything is to blame, blame capitalism, not left leaning ideology.
what movies?

Yeah...I certainly don't think a Southern Californian accent is anything like any accent in the British Isles.
It feels like what this business is doing is just copying the homework from everyone else around them and just changing it slightly so the teacher can't tell.

Seems a bit like your brain is creating a theory based on malice instead of just general timing.

People also tend to forget that some of those stories, like snow-white or the little mermaid, are old folk tales. These and many other stories have been around for hundreds of years and they really matter to the people that they belong to. So if you use that source material to get across some political or social message, you're bound to genuinely offend many people.

It also sounds like it’s trying too hard to sound like Disney, which could present branding/differentiation issues.

Now, hear me folks:
I’m a conservative.
I blame myself for saying "I think Brett Cooper would actually make a good Snow White" and having that comment blow up.
Exactly. I 100% agree.
The demand for cheap representation
The reactionary hissy fits
All of it is an L in my book.
The Cinderella TV remake in the 90's with Brandy and Whitney Houston was very successful so color-blind casting or race-swaping has worked, but not in the 2020's.
i personally think that the DW snow white is just cashing in on the culture wars going on.
I'd put money on DW's Snow White being trash. But no matter how trash it is, they'll be able say they made a better Snow White than Disney. Win win scenario
Not a Christian movie, but a great theological movie is Seventh Seal.
Deals with a Knight struggling with his faith in God and the prospect of death.

Found your videos recently. Im from Cleveland ohio usa love your content. Keep up the hard work
I like what seems to a reasonable perspective when analyzing pop media and societal issues, from what I've seen so far in a few of your videos.
