These statements like "Athlete XYZ must finally retire" come from the mindset that you've got to finish on top. As if tapering out of the top elite would diminish your earlier accomplishments. In my eyes that is BS! I think you can and should race as long as you like. Also if it means, handing over the crown to the next generation of elite racers. You should only stop when you feel that you've got enough of it, and want to focus on something else.
he's the "goat" only because he did nothing else than MTB. Van der poel and Pidcock would have crushed him anyday if they would have been on mtb only, and not on road. And btw, Schurter tried some random road races, he was pretty much anonymous... the real goat of cycling (in general) is really VDP.
