Anna is actually fabulous at Bel Canto. Her voice is a wonderful fit with the expansive legato characteristics of this repertoire. Her acting is also a huge asset to the style since it can be so park-and-bark. I could also go on about Renee's talent with the art form. That woman can sing almost anything. These women are 2 wonderful assets to the opera world in their class off stage as well. I wish people would pipe down about things they really have no idea about.
I have to agree that both Renee Fleming and Anna Netrebko aren't Bel Canto wonders. Now Mariella Devia, that's a Bel Canto Goddess for you. But this interview is very sweet. They're both very talented ladies. All that aside, ahhhhhhhhhh, those costumes are so beautiful!
The obsession with comparing singers is a shame. There is no point in comparing two singers in the same role. Otherwise what would we say about Netrebko vs Dessay as Lucia? It is true that Anna sings roles that I don't think fit her voice type but I can also appreciate the other things she brings to the table. She has changed the face and popularity of opera and as an aspiring opera singer myself, I find it so discouraging to see such ignorance and pretension splayed all over TH-cam.
Well as an aspiring singer you might wanna change vocal coach and conservatoire if you think Netrebko is a decent Lucia and I hope for your good and the intregrity of your voice that you will never sing such wrong roles whatever your fach may be. It's great she draws attention to opera but it would be greater if she did it because of talent and not based on looks. There are hundreds of better singers out there, maybe you're one of them too.
Preach from the past!!!! I walked out of this broadcast because she was awful! People talk about "well, she used to be good". No, she wasn't! When I saw this, I had heard her name many times as she was the next best thing in opera. I went it with ZERO negative thoughts or feeling about her. I was just excited about seeing the opera! Then she started singing. By the second act it was clear she had fundamental production problems. By the third act I couldn't take her irritating voice and left. I love that you have proof that you foresaw the disaster that her voice is today. (And yet many, many people still say she is a great singer, NOW! Her voice is a trainwreck!)
And you think you have an idea about what Bel Canto is? And you think you'll prove it by complimenting the most overrated singer in the history of opera? Right in the page of her worst-to-date take of a role that was written for a coloratura??? I wish we didn't get groupies trying to teach us what is good singing. If you feel like being humble, listen to Mariella Devia as Elvira. You will understand what legato singing, rapid coloratura passages, solid high notes etc actually sound like.
How ironic one of the biggest bel canto screwers (Renee) complimenting THE worst bel canto performer of nowadays for a role in which she was seriously miscast - and it shows from her horrible pitch problems, flat high notes, smashed coloratura and on. At least Renée has "some" coloratura access, breath support, projection and a trill.
ANNA NETREBKO IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED SOPRANO OF ALL TIME
