  • The Department of Education has been a colossal failure, plagued by inefficiency, waste, and an inability to achieve academic success for American children. President Trump campaigned on shutting the Department of Education down, and here's a roadmap on how Congress can actually get that job done.

I was right there with you. I hope we learn our lesson and I hope our future citizens learn the lesson also. That lesson is, when the government tries to sell you something and you think it's benevolent or benign it never is. Even 50 years ago the department of education was a piece of shit teaching kids about six education. They had no right to talk about that outside of the home.

Education should be put back in the hands of the parents. Not some government agency. Not crazy about putting it in the hands of the states either. They have too much control already. The parents should be in control. When I was a kid in the Sixties we had the PTA. My mom was able to sit in my 3rd grade class.

Just yesterday I was looking at the website for a local middle school. This school sits on the corner of an upper middle class neighborhood and across a smaller street from an uberwealthy neighborhood of $10M+ homes, so, not exactly the projects. The website was bragging on the fact that 52% of their students were either at or above grade level expectations... and are considered one of the top 5 in the district. WHAT THE HECK?? That means nearly half the school id deficient in their math skills... HALF!! The Gen Z crowd is beginning to show us just how ignorant and uneducated they are, and looks like Gen Alpha isn't doing any better.

I support this with one caveat, special education students need more protections. It's easier for a school district to funnel the kids into the school to jail pipeline (a real thing), or push disabled kids, who would otherwise be able to work as adults into group homes and SSI. My kid works in the trades and is really good at what he does but I had to fight hard and often got into trouble with the school district. Not all kids who receive special education will be able to work, they still deserve dignity and the ability to maximize their achievement.

I was thrown out of school the day after my 18th birthday. I had severe panic attacks and depression due to home troubles. The school didn’t care and due to missed classes threw me out. I went and got my GED and went to trade school. I’ll never forget how cruel the principal and other administrators treated me. Some teachers who found out were angry at them for not allowing me to graduate. I have harbored anger due to their lack of empathy and kicking a teen girl while she was down. Forgiveness is hard but it’s the only way I can free myself of the painful past. I’m now 36 and live alone and disabled after a failed unaliving attempt at 28. The way children and teens are treated dictates the rest of their lives which can either positively or negatively impact their community and their families. I regret allowing depression to lead me to such despair. One thing after another. My heart breaks for children today. They need stability and they need love. They don’t need to be told there’s multiple genders and they may be in the wrong body. That’s unbelievably evil. The less choices they have the safer they feel. One toy entertains for hours. Multiple toys cause meltdowns. Make life as simple and predictable as possible. I hope to see more families able to have stay at home parents for homeschooling. I know financially it’s not always possible but I know that it’s the best option for all involved. If I had married with children I’d love to be at home with them watching them learn and grow. Life’s the most precious gift. God bless you all my fellow American friends ❤

Take the money and pay the home schooled kids to pass tests. You would be surprised how motivated poor people are by money. Also, with khan academy and online resources, tutors will not be the most efficient use of money, as being a tutor requires not just academic credentials but teaching talent. Motivated stable parents and nuclear families will play a much bigger role in the success of kids than wealth.

@@CoelhoSports Who said anything about tutors? Teach the kids critical thinking skills to teach themselves. Teach them to hack. Kids do need supervision and a safe environment--that is what the grad student is for. I would defer to the latest LLM chatbot that respects full attribution and the "genealogy of truth", to do the actual teaching, so kids can appreciate how to show their work to demonstrate authorship and enable reproducibility of results. Then I would have the students participate in local to global scale hackathons that address climate change event mitigation, by leveraging statistical mechanics to model natural systems and quantum machines to evaluate. Start with qiskit and python on an Android tablet running termux (Linux distro). Let local businesses provide prizes to incentivize participation. You really do not appreciate who you are talking to. I am a loser here on TH-cam, so frustrated that I cannot share any of my ideas with anyone in defense of my country.

They can read. They can see. They can hold their own in a conversation. They can engage their student subjects in real time. Right now, all you need is a grad student to engineer prompts that would enable a custom acquisition of subject matter to be mastered by your child. Eventually you will not need that. Experts will contribute to a protocol wiki to share such chatbot prompting recipes. Please, I beg you to get out more!

I do not even agree with a state Department of Education. If we have children, we should care for them. If we intentionally neglect our children, they should become wards of the state.....and Foster Parents can homeschool. Foster Parenting should be rigorous to apply, but paid very well.
For the truly poor, but not intentionally neglectful parents, they can send their child to a charitable church school....which used to exist before government money got involved.
And before you say it cannot happen....we have 8 children on poverty level income. We have never accepted ANY form of government assistance and we pay our bills. We may not have fancy vacations and nice cars, but we budget and go to the zoo, parks, and other fun places. None of us feel poor. Others who make more than us seem more miserable and have less, blowing their money on cable TV and eating out frequently. Our children read grade levels ahead, can socialize with peers and adults, know how to function in the real world, and will be a giver to society as opposed to a leech.
Give education back to the parents. If I am not qualified to teach my child the same information that I received a diploma for, the school system failed worse than I did. I would not send my children to a failing system that can not teach me to regurgitate what I was "taught."

Geez. Correlation rather than causation for why students are doing so poorly. Divorce rates are higher, as are unmarried parents raising kids, often with various dads. Obesity and chronic disease is higher amongst kids (~50% of poverty-line kids are overweight/obese). Americans now get most of their diet from processed foods. TV, video games, computers, and cell phones can be accessed 24/7 and are designed to be addictive. Maybe there are other factors affecting achievement. Yes, the federal government has grown too large and put ridiculous requirements on schools that have hurt education. I have not heard enough incisiveness on what should stay and what should go; it's just tear it all down!
It's funny that conservatives are declaring that now is the time to shut down the Dept of Ed, when Republicans grew it massively with NCLB. Yes, Obama followed up with his own monstrosities. This looks like an elite bipartisan agenda to ruin education. For what purpose? Who benefits? Sure as hell, ain't the American people.
