Sometimes products just get 'upgraded' because the lower spec original components are no longer being manufactured, and would be harder to source.

There's actually a couple sites unloading the Gen 1s. I just picked up 2 for $300. Curious to what the future services it will be for but for my current needs (literally just streaming music) I just added 2 more speakers at for 25% off.

"According to Sonos, the new processor and additional memory do not currently represent any new features or noticeable performance changes between the Gen 2 and the original One, which is now called the Sonos One Gen 1. But these upgrades can enable new features specific to the updated speaker in the future." Let's be honest Play 1, Play one first gen and Play One gen 2 all have the same sound quality. I think the biggest take away on this is, it will have a purpose one day. No one upgrades the hardware on a just because. If you buy Sonos one gen 1 now because you want to save a couple of bucks, then you likely should not have bought it. They have been struggling with getting Google on their devices and for some reason I think when they do the performance will be a whole lot better. Same likely can be said for Airplay 2 or any future release from Apple. You can bet they have knowledge and a plan, we as the public just don't know it. Remember these are smart speakers, not the speakers of yester years, despite sounding the same...LOL Who know perhaps they are working on their own voice Ai. It seems to be the thing companies all do today. Believe me I am no expert on the why, and i won't pretend I know the why but no company puts in better hardware JUST BECAUSE. You can bet "THERE IS A PLAN"
The market is fierce. I just bought a Google Home max 340 bucks (2 for 600)that's almost half of a Play 5 and two is cheaper than one play 5. At the end of the day It plays what I need because I am an agnostic person when I buy 3rd party services. Netflix, spotify, etc . Sonos surround 2200.00 I can do much better systems for that price and have better sound supported formats. The rest of the work has caught up and in some cases surpassed sonos. I wonder what they will do next to innovate" Even Apple knows they have to get their Apple Tv on TVs because services are the future of profit and Tv are just that, agnostic and "so call" smart.

Well for you to make this review better. I would have finished that raspberry Pi setup to showcase how DIY speakers can be more smart. Especially if you get a DAC hat for the raspberry Pi.
Basically how to DIY your own airplay into your existing setups.
We use like 6 raspberry Pis in our venue to simplify music for multiple rooms. We use 1 Mac and an apple playlist. Pretty easy and affordable to get everything up and running.
just some food for thought :D

I just bought from Amazon a Sonos One Gen 2 with Alexa built in. I thought,"Hey that's cool". I already have the Sonos 5 in my kitchen and now I can have one in my bedroom. Well, I had a nightmare hooking it up! I had to move my wireless modem to the bedroom to enable it so it would work. I was thinking "wireless". I guess I'm dumb on that. I got the speaker up and running and it sounded really good. Then I looked on the box and packaging for Alexa anything. Nothing! This was one of the reasons why I bought this speaker. I could tell it to turn on and off and ask questions or even turn the volume up or down. Nope, it didn't have it like it said on Amazon and sadly it had to go back because it wasn't what I paid for and wanted. The sound is very Sonos and I like that alot, it's just not what I was paying for. Oh, I brought it to the UPS store and they charged me $9.00 for a box to ship it back in. So I'm out 9 bucks on a box and a wrong description of the product.

Update the Sonos to the latest firmware if it didn't do it automatically, open the app, go to Settings, and add Alexa as a Voice Service. You had exactly what you wanted, but you didn't configure it. You gave up because it didn't show the feature on the box? Did you look online or contact support at all?

Also World Wide Stereo has a deal right now for 2 Gen 1s for $300. Pretty good deal. I picked up a pair myself to add to my setup. I doubt the Gen 2 will see any benefits in the next 2 years at least. Sonos is not a company that regularly updates.

You heard it here first. The adoption of Bluetooth Low Energy Is not for ease of setup as Sonos are relatively easy to setup on Wifi anyways. The inclusion of BLE is to leverage Bluetooth Beacon technology for hyper location. This feature will allow for such features like the utterance "Play Jazz music in this room" or the ability for the BLE in your smart watch to "move" your music with you as you walk through your Sonos zones. BLE is a requirement for Beacons and you should expect larger rollout of hyper local features across many product groups. The Beacon Tech has been just sitting and waiting to be commercialized for consumers.
