I love your Language Story videos! I didn't know about Nicaragua's deaf community before. Thank you for giving us a look at their lives and their language!
Wow, I attended an Auslan (Australia Sign Language) many years ago. I had a Auslan Dictionary but lost it is a flood 6 years ago. Now I have forgotten most of the Auslan Sign Language but it is fascinating to see two deaf persons totally communicating using this language. I remember our lecturer was totally deaf but could speak to instruct the class. Very interesting to see your video and how a sign language started from scratch!
10:01 It wasn't such a tumultuous time for most civilians. At least the urban ones. I know because I grew up there during the US terrorism period, the contras were kilometres away from my town and our lives were rather normal despite inflation and stuff I didn't really have to manage as a kid. For us children of cities, it was a "tumultuous time" only in that there were many great projects happening all the time and everything was progressing around us. I remember the 80s and early 90s with great fondness as we lived in a sense of hope and construction. As soon as I heard from linguists that there was this unique language that was born from nothing in Nicaragua, I knew it had to have happened during the period of the Sandinista revolution, probably as a result of a literacy project, and immediately got very curious about it. These testimonies confirm what I thought. Thank you for making this video, it's high time that I go back to that amazing country btw.
Hey, I am writing a paper and wondering if you could cite some sources about the use of soviet medicines that lead to deafness. Thank you, muchas gracias!
Hi Lindsay, a very interesting video and what a missed oppertunity to not include deaf native speakers in your video about their language. I'd love to hear/see them speak about their language instead of the experts of researchers.
Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting. Unfortunately in this case, we couldn't find anyone to speak with us representing the community directly. However, in season 2 there's an episode in Vietnam where we were able to speak to Deaf native speakers of the language directly for their input as well: th-cam.com/video/TpoH7X5BAOk/w-d-xo.html Thanks! :)
