Still one of the greatest, if not *the* greatest, introductions to a game in the history of ... history.

I know the actual sound quality is low, but i do prefer this version of the Myst theme. It has subtle differences to the newer version, the most obvious being those first few drum beats. They're far more haunting, and have a flange effect on them which just adds to it.

Very atmospheric too, my favourite sound from the game is before clicking on the book after it lands after the intro. The 90s was full of these atmospheric tracks and sounds and I find modern times don't come close to that haunting feeling.

Totally agree! Games from this era hit a sweet-spot between audiovisual fidelity and leaving some to the imagination. I would argue that newer titles are actually less visceral because they leave as little as possible to the player's imagination.

Yeah. Nothing beats this original! Even Rand's VO is superior to the other versions. And that sweet sweet crackly 1993 sound quality! (french kiss!)

Back in the day when this pushed my IBM PS/1 PC running a 486 DX2 66 mhz to its limits. The load times were terrible, but I didn't know any better at the time. The visuals were stunning, the music was haunting, and the lack of a HUD or interface made the game more mysterious and immersive.

A great intro. I didn't realize until many years later that there were myst novels, and that this intro was word for word the end of the Book of Atrus, when Atrus escaped Riven, trapping Ghen.
The book fell through to New Mexico in the early 1800s, where it was picked up by the stranger near the cleft where Atrus was raised. Just like the remains of the riven fissure scope and the bones of a wahrk fell into the same desert after the destruction of Riven, as seen in the game Uru.
Another thing I never knew until recently is that Tomahna, the home of Atrus and Catherine in the third and fourth games, is actually located on the surface of earth / d'ni, only a few miles from the cleft in New Mexico, circa 1820s. That's how the stranger found them again in these games, without linking and becoming trapped on Myst again. Atrus had people bore through the wall of the room he was stuck in during the events of myst, so he could access the d'ni cavern (and the surface) again after the events of Riven.

I need to read these books, only played the games myself and I heard there is a TV show being made of the Myst universe. Also I had an inkling that Myst was set in the 1800s, it has a strong steampunkish vibe to it.

I had no idea what Atrus was saying in the beginning when I was a kid. But the atmosphere the music and art created absolutely gripped me. Never beat this game until I revisited it in my 20s. But dang, I played the heck out of it as a kid.
Never underestimate the power of a good intro to your game.

    • @vcdonovan5943
      @vcdonovan5943 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

There's actually no explanation given in the game so the intro makes no sense in context.
It's only after reading the Book of Atrus or playing the sequel, Riven, that the intro can be understood.

Atrus [Opening voiceover]: I realized, the moment I fell into the fissure, that the Book would not be destroyed as I had planned. It continued falling into that starry expanse, of which I had only a fleeting glimpse. I have tried to speculate where it might have landed; I must admit, however, such conjecture is futile. Still, the questions about whose hands might one day hold my Myst Book are unsettling to me. I know my apprehensions might never be allayed, and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written.

I played this on some kind of Apple computer too, the only one I ever had. Friend of mine saw it and said his PC version didn't have as smooth transitions with the graphics going from place to place. He was also rather astonished at what detailed notes I had taken, drawing the clues from the books or places I'd seen in a little composition book so I could refer back to them.
I never knew which detail would be important so I sketched them with as much detail as possible.

    I HAVE THIS.
Seriously, I have this on CD, from 1993... my father bought it. It's the one with install instructions for Windows 3.x and Win95... that CD still works, too -- I have an XP box built out of an old, very odd (even for what it is) Geode NX1500 based European thin client (I'm East Coast USA)... Fujitsu Siemens Futro S400. Upgraded the cooling, stuck in an early 8gb SLC (!!) industrial 2.5in IDE SSD on a cable... it runs WinXP and an external USB2 CD burner handles the game disc ;)
BTW... MYST Masterpiece Edition and all five other games are now on the Internet Archive... IDK who put them there, but thank you! I may have to upgrade the storage in my Futro so that I can install and run them all now. Pretty much any machine that would run P really well back then, will run them all quite handily now... you *should* be able to run them all in a 32bit Win7 environment (it's the 64bit one that breaks compatibility with such things; the 32bit versions are fine with it -- I can attest to this from personal experience) but I make no promises beyond "should" at that point.
At any rate... thanks for the memories! Good stuff.
