  • Guardian political editor Anushka Asthana goes behind the scenes on the Conservative and Labour campaign trails to scrutinise Theresa May’s bold claim that the Tories are now the party of the working class. Is May serious about reducing inequality or is it simply an election season ploy to win votes?

Have you heard the expression "you have to have money to make money, well if you invest in people and business then you will receive your money back and then some that's exactly what labour want to do, we shouldn't be scared of borrowing but we need to make sure its for the right reason and not just to give it to give it to big company's in the form of tax breaks.

I would make the NHS the lithmus test: World Bank per capita health care expenditures in USD in 2014: UK 3,900, U.S. 9,200, average for wealthy * European countries and Canada 5,000 - 5,500, Australia 6,000, Norway plus 8,000. You ADD 40 / 45 % to the UK expenditures and land at the German and Austrian level (5,600 resp. 5,400). The NHS is and always has been a very cost efficient system (certainly the most cost-efficient in Europe, among the best in the world - of course other better funded system might have been better or more comfortable) According to Larry Sanders it runs on 100 billion GBP a year now, the Tories CUT 15 - 20 BILLIONS in the last 6 -8 years (which is HUGE), and plan 20 billions more in cuts. The word RECKLESS and RUTHLESS comes to mind. - The average voter may not know it - but it is the job of a politician to know that you cannot have a system worthy of a First World Country without some MINIMUM funding. - They evoke the vision of financial problems w/o ever mentioning that the UK always has spent much less than comparable nations. - the honest thing would be to admit that they do not want to have modern healthcare for EVERYONE - hard to sell that in a democracy.
Intentionally undermining the NHS makes sense (in an evil way), a public health service that works well (enough) and is still among the most cost efficient in the world * cannot be sold off to for-profit interests. Public means NON profit ! - in the eyes of the conservatives it is a major flaw that such a large chunk of the economy will on principle not benefit the financier and rentier class.
    * comparing wealthy nations ! wages are a huge factor in healthcare, so you can compare Australia with France, Denmark, or Germany. The average wages in Hungary or Poland for instance are much lower so that is not comparable.
Public means: it is only meant to do well for the patients and the staff (while staying within a reasonable budget).
Let me repeat: they have a healthcare system with lean funding that works O.K. and then the financial crisis (Banking crisis !) and the high costs of the wars (which the population did not want in the first place) and the high costs of the bank bailouts and the economic downturn were the PRETEXT to IMPOSE AUSTERITY and to make MASSIVE CUTS.
NEVER LET A GOOD CRISIS GO TO WASTE to wreck the publicly funded systems (that benefit only the low to middle income people and on top they might ask the wealthier segment to contribute more in comparsion to fund the healthcare and social care systems).
The madness has method and history behind it: Thatcher publicly promised to not touch the NHS, secretly planned otherwise - and her team made a massive intervention, they were not as ideological and realized that move could amount to policital suicide.
Any party willing to compromise the healthcare and social care system, a press (owned by rich persons !) that does not call a spade a spade - and the part of the opposition (New Labour) that does not fiercly oppose and call out those schemes are useless/evil/reckless/sell-outs.

The real division in the country is now between small-c conservatism and an independent UK, and progressivism and being part of the EU. The parties don't yet reflect that division, still clinging onto the old facade of left vs. right, and a new facade of being pro-Brexit, when in actual fact, the majority of MPs, Lords, civil service, media and academia are pro-EU progressives. The small-c conservative, patriotic voters aren't represented in parliament anywhere near as much as their numbers in the country.

It is unsurprising that class consciousness is not something you can take for granted. I would, however, emphasise that the media currently play a large role in framing political narratives and obscuring class interests, which lends itself to a lot of confusion. I suppose the economy and the types of jobs available also contribute to this, since the workplace today is vastly different than it was in the past, i.e., a smaller workforce, less camaraderie, etc.

IngSoc didn't have a real ideology. It's aesthetic, however, is much more reminiscent of the Nazis - it certainly was not socialist.

    • @M2Mil7er
      @M2Mil7er 7 ปีที่แล้ว

IngSoc sought to undermine socialism and everything it stood for. They were never Socialist, as revealed in the book. Anyone that honestly believes Corbyn is a democratic socialist, cannot logically insist he's IngSoc or any other 1984 parallels, especially since Orwell was also a democratic socialist, and would likely vote for Corbyn today. Same can be said for paranoid equations to V for Vendetta and Corbyn's Labour; It's writer Alan Moore doesn't vote, but he said people should vote Labour if they want to *avoid* V for Vendetta coming true.

  • @richardsb61

The Labour party manifesto pledge to introduce a Land Value tax (THE GARDEN TAX) means that everybody who lives in a house will PAY a minimum of £1250pa , or more typically £3000pa if you live in a family sized house irrespective of what your income is. This pledge is hidden in their manifesto because it will HIT YOUR POCKET HOWEVER POOR YOU ARE.

The expression 'dictatorship of the proletariat' sounds entirely offensive to most people who have been brought up and educated in Capitalist societies. In Britain, our schooling leaves us with the most narrow view regarding the questions of democracy and dictatorship. We are taught that democracy and dictatorship are mutually exclusive and that there is a straight line from 'most democratic'to 'most dictatorial'. This education deliberately disregards the fact that British democracy is, in reality, democracy for the Capitalist class alone. Yes, there are multiple political parties, but these all represent the Capitalist class. The policies of the Conservative Party, the Labour Party, the Green Party, the Liberal Democrats, UKIP, SNP and Plaid Cymru are the policies of business, of private property, of exploitation, and of imperialism. The working class does not have the slightest say in how the country is run, in fact, the entire British state is geared towards the armed suppression of the working class. Granted, this is difficult to appreciate in times of relative social peace, but it's all too clear during times of unrest; just look back at the role played by the police and the army during the General Strike of 1926, or the Miners'Strike of 1984. Therefore, British democracy can be considered as the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, it is democratic to the extent that there is democracy for the Capitalist class via parliament and various extra-parliamentary bodies. And it therefore differs from the total bourgeois dictatorship of Nazi Germany. However, it is dictatorial on the sense that the Capitalist class maintains its exploitative relationship with the working class through means of repression.

Any Labour comeback appears to be too little, too late. For too long, Corbyn and the MPs refused to cooperate, and so these MPs soon began to amplify the criticisms of Corbyn people so often hear, in a bid to try and get him out. Only now do the two groups appear to actually be working together, but the criticism of Corbyn and Labour has taken a permanent hold. Theresa May was cunning to capitalise on this internal quarreling.

Torie political ideology is totally incompatible with the working class structure [which is fundamentally induced by and a reactive consequence of the middle classes]it strives for a country containing all citizens being self employed citizens working on the basic principle of capitalism as a goal in life both socially and professionally. Evolved capitalism in a modern expanding society is both detrimental to democracy in the long run and works on the principle that the more money you have the more power you hold over the working classes.

The problem is May. She looks like an elitist. She is very similar to Hillary Clinton. Voters vote based on looks so conservatives need to get someone who looks working class who talks like a working class person. So long as this person looks working class, acts working class, but then puts in policies that benefit billionaires, such as cutting corporate tax rates and deregulation the finance sector, then they will have a great political career.
