Caster boards are generally made from the same plywood you'd use to build your Road Case. However, it's recommended that you don't use material less than 3/8" thick. Some people prefer to cut a single board to the same dimensions as the bottom of the case - the choice is yours.
The main reason is that if the case is dropped on the casters the impact could damage the bottom of the case. It's best if only the caster board is damaged - easier to replace a board or 2 than the bottom of a Road Case.
Since you are essentially "bridging" the caster board across the two aluminum extrusions and then cinching them down with bolts in the middle, do you not risk distorting the bottom panel of the box? (no spacers taking up the gap between the "top" of the caster board and the "bottom" of the box.
IF ONLY IT WAS THAT EASY ....The other Steps you missed . You MUST , MUST Use a Lock Washer or BLUE LOCKTIGHT OR BOTH to keep the bolt from coming out . On all of our equipment(ALL OF IT) we use Blue Locktite (NEVER USE RED,Unless it is on a Dirt bike) To make sure NONE of the Screws or Nuts come lose . I have PC Boards out of Amps were the screw come lose and landed on the PC Board taking out the Whole Amp and end up with a LARGE Hole in the PC Board . But back to Cases . They get Bounced around by the Monkeys unloading your trucks and in the back of the truck as you drive down the road . SAVE your self some pain and sorrow and USE BLUE LOCKTIGHT .... YOU WILL THANK ME LATER !!!!
As with any case you'd need to take care to seal the bolt holes to preserve the waterproof aspect of your molded case. Don't over tighten the bolts as you could crack the case. It's been many times. Have fun! ReliableDan - Retired
@@irgarza52 @capertureimagery6604 I'll try to answer for both of you - essentially the casterboard rests on the aluminum edge material, so that if the case is dropped or miss-handled the shock is transferred to the hard edges rather than the wood bottom (which is usually riveted to the aluminum and not designed to take the weight/stress of being dropped)

What kind of board do you use for the caster board? Didn't see that listed in the DIY parts list. Great video, btw.
This maybe really old to get a response but I was wondering if a caster board can be attached to an ABS molded rack case?

@@KidFromWinnetka any advice on drill bit type or pre tape or if rubber grommets are a good idea?
@@christopherheadcase6886 Grommets sandwiched between fender washers is always a good idea. The drill bit type and pre tape are above my pay grade 🙂
what size casters did you use?
Why wouldn't you just connect the casters directly to the flight case?
I'd love to know this answer too!
Was 11 years ago when I asked the question. I don’t think we will ever get the answer.
