Hey Brock, back in the day, I used to need help with NYT hard puzzles, but just finished this one without much fuss. Like most things, it's a matter of practice. CTC does a number of videos highlighting basic techniques that are very helpful. I can also recommend this website for a comprehensive listing of simple to extremely complex solving methods: hodoku.sourceforge.net/en/techniques.php. Hodoku is a computerized tool that you can use to solve puzzles or build your own. It will even give you hint's when you are stuck. Good luck!

I must admit, I can't understand why people are obsessed with how quick they can solve a puzzle. For me (and it is fairly rare for puzzles on this channel) the joy is to complete it, click on 'Check' and seeing the lovely message "Looks good to me!" appearing. I can never get anywhere near the times of Simon or Mark. Well done for the perseverance, I would have given up, long before your time.

I enjoy the mix of puzzles, but especially those, like this one, that I can solve on my own. I can often spot triples, x-wings, sometimes 'bent triples/Y-wings' and sometimes 'W-wings' but some tricks like Swordfish, x-y chains, w-x-y-z- wings, and things like that are still beyond me!
I'm also still getting into thermo and knights-move sudoku, and am enjoying those (though still getting the hang of them). Killer and sandwich sudoku are interesting to watch, but I haven't tried many myself, I think they're still a bit out of my league at the moment.
Keep up the great posts, and I hope you and your families are staying safe!

@@sunriselg I oftgen start by noticing when there are two cells in the same block, row, or column that have two possibilities each, and one of them is the same number. That encourages me to look around for a cell that would complete the triple/Y-wing. Anything beyond that I usually can't find, though.
Finding 'sashimi' fish patterns is still hard for me, even with X-wings, though I'm getting better at 'finned' X-wings, sashimi and otherwise.

I love the mix of different difficulties you guys feature. One thing I would say is that I'd love to see a bit more of the unique variations (especially if there's multiple at play! like Starcraft as an extreme example but even just thermos + a cloned shape or any combinations like this in the same puzzle) that are only taking you guys ~20 minutes to solve. I notice quite a jump in difficulty on the ones that you guys feature that take you more like say 25 minutes and up, it usually means you had to really work through a bunch of tricky stuff. Of course it's a spectrum but when I see a 19 minute video I'm eager at what should be a satisfying solve for me, when I see a 28 minute video I better grab a coffee as this is going to be long struggle! Both are nice...but would love a bit more of the former in the form of the variants as opposed to the sufficient amount of < 20 minute classic sudoku solves already present here :) Cheers

It was gratifying to see how similar my solve path was to yours, although somewhat appalling how much faster you got there than me! I like the mix of difficulties on the channel. Here's a suggestion of something that would help me. I do the NYT Hard puzzle every day. I'd like to see some sort of star rating of the puzzle you're doing that day on the channel, similar to the ratings assigned in your app. If an NYT Hard is maybe around a 5, I'd like to know how the daily channel puzzle compares to that. If nothing else but for my time planning.

  • @Afterthoughtbtw
    @Afterthoughtbtw 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I somehow managed to overlook the naked single and stared at it for an age, before noticing that only two of the 359 triplet could go in row 3 in box 1 and that that affected where the 1 and 4 had to go in box 2, and thus getting to the exact same position spotting the naked single would have got me. A bit like turning right three times to get to a destination, rather than left once.
I enjoy the variety of puzzles you guys do at the moment. Specifically to the Sudokus, the variant Sudokus usually rely more upon logic specific to its extra restrictions, whereas the classics rely upon more advanced 'straight' Sudoku techniques, so it's really nice to have those different demands on the brain, and for a similar reason it's nice to have a variation in difficulty. Not only is it nice to brush up on the basics (like spotting naked singles...) but they act as stepping stones for people who are relatively new to the genre in order to bridge the gap between novice and savant.

I tend to be more methodical in my approach, and I am not worried about my time.
When I get a row, column, or box down to only three or four unsolved cells, I usually use Centre notation to fill in, cell by cell, the remaining possibilities for that row, column, or box.
Doing this makes it easier for me to spot singles, pairs, or even triples.
Sometimes, if I get stuck, I will use Centre notation to fill in even more rows, columns, or boxes. I did not see his 1-3-7 triple, but because I had used Centre notation on the entire remaining puzzle, I caught a 2-9 pair in the bottom row. This let me eliminate 2s and 9s in the bottom row, and solve the 6 in the lower left corner. I am very methodical about deleting pencil marks after I solve a cell, and the rest of the puzzle was easily solved by eliminating possibilities.

You can do this without the box 7 triple. The 4/5 pair in box 9 led you away from the fact that r9c6 was also restricted to 4/5 (using the exact same digits from the box 9 pair), which forced the 8 in r8c6. Then with the naked 1 in r3c2, the puzzle falls apart. Basically it was the same logic you used, except without needing to actually discover the triple. Satisfying solve either way! :)

I prefer the harder puzzles, but that's because I've consumed all your content since you launched your web app (about a year ago?) and done all the puzzles myself while listening afterwards to commentary for when I found particularly hard solves. The commentary especially has helped me hone my technique so that I can see and apply even some of the more "advanced techniques" like X-wings, swordfish, and jellyfish (I still have problems spotting Y-wings, but I often find them with X-loops).
But I'm fine with whatever you guys like to do.

I personally love to solve the more logical variants like Thermo, Palindrome, Clone etc... The math variants aren't as enjoyable for me to solve, but I still enjoy watching you solve them , and I'm therefor still getting better at them. Throw in an occasional Starbattle, Starcraft, Aquarium or some other oddball and I'm happy. Keep up the good work!

This one can be done without the triple. Just need to note that on the bottom row, 4,5 is blocked out for the full bottom left block and is blocked in column 9 from the top box, which means 4,5 can only go in cells 6 and 7. That then places the 8 in cell 6 in the row above. Simpler and easier in my opinion, but depends what you're used to I guess.

Oh, and I think I like a good mix, personally. Something like this one with no "advanced" techniques but a couple of hard-to-spot singles and/or triples is I think perfectly appropriate. All the way up through the ones that break my brain in increasingly less pleasant ways, along with the few I don't attempt at all. Mileage will vary, but I think you have a pretty good grip on your target audience already.
Just keep looking for puzzles that you yourselves find fun and/or interesting and you'll be fine.

I didn't need those triples. At 10:52 those two cells are actually 48 pair, which was the key for me (together with 28 and 268 cells at column 2) to solve the puzzle.

    - not bad for this time of the morning (must wake up first! made a mistake). I was looking for the usual NYT row or column triple & didn't see one. Now to watch and find the trick I missed.

      @ol1ver49 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh I see, I didn't need the NYT triple near the end because I had the 48 pair at the bottom of column 6 and the 137 triple were actually the last squares in box 7.

Thanks for this, it was really annoying me that I couldn't do it before. I prefer doable classic puzzles because it helps me learn. If they're too complicated I know I'll never remember that technique. The naked single 1 was the trick I needed here.

Your solving path is good, but you don't need to spot triples if you see the 45 pair in row 9 (from the beginning).

I don't actually think you need to use triples at all. Instead of penciling in triples in box 7, the 4 in box 2 + standard sudoku gives you a 4-8 pair in box 8, which then means the 5s in box 8 must be along row 8. This solves the 4-5 pairs in box 9, which unravels the puzzle.

  • @JackDeHearts

I didn't manage to spot the hidden triple but I worked on box 8 row 8 and found a naked single 2 in C2R8. Snowballed the rest of the puzzle after that.

I'd like to see more of the hard and manageable puzzles. I like to do them before watching the video and if more videos are done of the ones that stretch you, then I won't be able to do them, which would kill the interactivity with me that this channel provides.

I don’t think I needed any of the ‘hidden triples’ but I did need help with the naked single 1 in box 1, and then I think I used the 48 pair in box 8 that Mark did not spot to get the rest of the puzzle. 12 minutes not counting the time watching the video up to the naked single spot.

There was also a 48 pair in column 6, last 2 cells. You wouldn't have to find the triple in the box this way!

In the bottom row the 45 pair is actually there really early and lets you place the 8 right away as a result.

1, 4, 8 in the row, 3, 6, 9 ( the 1-9 pair) in the column, 2, 5 in the box, the only number left is the 7

Around 10:20, you came up with a 268 triple in the bottom left, and ruled out 8 for C1R9 where you have a 6. At that time for the life of me I can't figure out why 8 was ruled out. Love learning new things please enlighten me.

    • @RichSmith77

The 8 had already been pencil marked in column 2 in box 7, because these are the only available cells in column 2 for the 8.

I solved it a little differently than Mark as I never saw the triples in box 7.
The 4s in Columns 45 were pushed into Rows 89 Column 6 making a 48 pair pushing the 5 into Row 8 Column 5. The rest of the puzzle was easy from there.

My solution path was very different than his, I didnt spot the tripple in box 7, instead I noticed the 4/8 pair in box 8 which locked the 5 in r8c5, the 5 then resolved the 45 pair in box 9 and the 4/8 pair in box 8, after that it was smooth sailing without anything too complicated going on

This puzzle confirms if i ever get stuck on a puzzle Mark is doing I need to just pause and look for naked singles. Should probably do that in general. but so many of his puzzles I get stuck until i see him find a naked single and the rest unravels.
