Both, I only buy vinyl records for albums that are "worth it" (like Queen, or Jethro Tull for example), CDs for stuff that would be overkill on vinyl (mostly modern punk and simple metal) and streaming if I want to look for new stuff or if I need a convenient way of listening, like while I'm studying.
I think Roon is giving us back some of what we lost when we left physical media behind. I still have a few vinyl records and cds (hell, I even have some MD, DCC and regular old cassettes) but when I spend quality listening time I more often than not go to Roon.
I don’t own a record player but I want to buy a cheap Victrola so I can get into it and It’s just cool and the vibe hits different. I’m 14 but newer music will never under any circumstances be better than the classics.
I don't hate streaming unlike some in the vinyl community--I think it's great that people can freely access music-- in fact, I discovered many of my favorite bands through Spotify. The problem with Spotify is that their recommendation algorithms focus on giving the listener more of what he/she likes, so the listener doesn't get exposed to new music. In addition, they only stream greatest hits (so some underrated, yet amazing songs don't get played) What I do is that I find bands I like on Spotify, then buy the records to get a fuller experience
Alison Eng on Pandora you can listen on discover mode and it plays music in the same genre and theme but of less popular songs. But I have found all my favorite songs streaming and build off the songs I like.
Everyone else's reasons for liking vinyl: Sound, Experience, Collectability.

Sitting there and watching the record spin is very soothing for me. And to turn the volume on my stereo all the way down but still hear the needle make music is something that I think is super neat! There’s no electronics in a record, and I can see EXACTLY how it works. I love it.
My grandma bought me a Lendl l-3808 for 174 euro and the needle was bad. My friend told me that he saw the plastic that the needle was mounted to was lifting the needle up. He tried to fix it and now we need to buy a new needle for 20 euro 🤦♂️ I JUST WANTED TO LISTEN TO DARE,DIRTY HARRY AND FEEL GOOD INC
Vinyl is back for the same reason film cameras are back...the slowdown. Everything in our life is so fast paced, from people and relationships to information and how we get It...it’s nice to have a slow focus.

JoeyShip I am 57 years of age and enjoy Drum & Bass plus techno and donk music amongst many other genres. Guess what it sounds stonking on digital because the digital medium conveys and holds the rapid, fast transients and extended bass really well. Music formats should never be 'age appropriate'? Your statement is as ludicrous as me stating 'i only play vinyl on that odd senior pipe & slippers moment when i really fancy listening to a Neil Young record on a Sunday morning'. You have to understand that the new and technologically advanced music formats present the next generation of musicians with the engineering and mastering tools that will fuel and drive the desire and passion for innovation and creativity amongst the next generation of music consumers.
MrDegsy69 what are even talking about? I never said anything about it’s sound quality and it’s capabilities or that it’s better or worse. I simply said, basically, that the “slower” formats are on the rise because everything in our lives is so fast paced. Not just literally fast paced, like tempo and bpms, but fast emotionally and perceptively. Film photographer forces you to slow down and think about every shot because you don’t have an “unlimited” supply of shots like a digital camera. And vinyl forces you to slow down and listen because you often have to flip the vinyl and the process is a little more time consuming. Very different than going on Spotify and putting on a 4 hour mix via Bluetooth. Different genres SOUND better on different formats, arguably, but this isn’t about being an audiofile. So I appreciate your input, but I think you misread what I was originally saying.

I've been there and done that back in the seventies when it truly was the only mainstream analogue music medium worthy of consideration and not just a mere hipster fad. The land fill sites of the future will truly love you. At least it's not just us 'old people' with our dirty and polluting old vinyl record collections getting the flack for it anymore is it? I am one of the “kids” (19 y/o) he speaks of who are into vinyl now a days. I’m into them because we didn’t have them growing up. CDs were only still heavily used until I was like 7, then the iPod came out, so I never physically owned any of the music I listened to my whole life until a few years ago. I can’t remember what compelled me to buy a turntable and some records but I did and I love it. Something about being able to hold music in your hands in this massive form and being able to look at all the details on the jacket is so cool. Nothing like it.

I am a 16 year old who loves firewood and lamps,I don't have electricity in my house because its not of quality and class. I like old oil lamps because the light is soothing and relaxing,the smoke makes it more lucrative. I don't even mind my house getting lit if its interesting to watch. I know it takes up a lot of space and is harmful for the environment but what to do I am a selfish POS who doesn't care that its more costly and dangerous.
I am nostalgic about a time that I haven't experienced and that's what I am into nowadays.

I think vinyl is enjoyed so much by the younger generation because it offers something to collect, all while being a token of appreciation to your favorite artists. I have rarely actually listened to the records I have, but love collecting them. They are also great for decoration as well

With Spotify you don’t own any albums. You just have *access* to it. It’s like a mini music store, sure you can have all you want, but you just paid to get in and you don’t own any of it.
With vinyl, you really *own* the music. The artist created it and now you support them by really *owning* their art.

Gavin Cheng Of course. There’s nothing wrong with Spotify but the truth is, Spotify is great for listener, detrimental for the artist. With Vinyl, you’re keeping up the sacred tradition of supporting the artist and being able to physically love the music. I wish vinyls weren’t expensive.

@Tucson Jim collecting and enjoying the book/record are not the same. I love reading and listening to music, not filling my house. Mp3, ebooks, also digital photos all fit on tiny devices and still enrich my life

Well, vinyl has actually made a huge comeback and most people my age love vinyl (I’m also 20), myself included. Every time I go to the mall there’s always at least one store selling classic vinyl records and turntables/ record players (I’ve heard them referred to as both).

I'm a little cynical albums I bought on vinyl new as a teenager for $8 lol are now like $28. And I was working in a record store in 1990 when they started packing up all the vinyl. so I grew to really like CDs
I got into vinyls not because of the audio quality but because of the artwork. I love having the giant artwork and sometimes special notes from the artist about the album. Really feels nice and personal.

It's inconvenient compared to the alternative, which is streaming music. This guy is acting like this guy is a "lazy millennial" when in reality it's quite different to go back. I grew up with an iPod and I experienced all my music through digital download, and streaming. So yes, it is inconvenient. But that's not a bad thing.

I guess if you spend hours hovering over a turntable you are certainly focussing on the content alright as your stylus will be grinding away in the end groove every 20 minutes if you don't or perhaps even more frequently with the 2 x 45 format. Quite how you can kick back and enjoy listening to music in this fashion eternally perplexes me? In the vinyl days i would play an eclectic mix of jazz, metal, classical, funk, hip hop, alternative etc all in one single session. As you can imagine this created a bit of a mess with 12" singles and LPs strewn all over the place. Thank God for the convenience of digital and the ability to create and save playlists. I have now reached the point where my entire music collection is ripped to 16 and 24 bit flac and stored on a single massive hard drive. It really does not get any easier or better sounding than this. The recent hipster fad of the vinyl resurgence is pathetic as i am quite sure they do not understand the logistics of storing, maintaining and transporting their entire music collection in this format. Stop kicking up such a stink as the format is a dead letter office. Kick back instead and light up a big fat jay and really enjoy your music in the digital format the way it was truly intended to be heard ever since the mid nineties. Vinyl records just like cassettes are just so last century and even CDs are going the same way today. Why bother with physical formats at all as the future of digital music is streaming or virtual storage mediums. Even my video collection has gone this way now as it all just consists of full 1080p Mp4 rips that average around 1.4gb file size. Yes i even have movie playlists as well!

I like that vinyl forces me to be more selective in what music I spend money on so that I only buy records I can enjoy listening from beginning to end.

@bobbiebob575 bob You need to do your research. CDs are ok and are fine , CD does have an advantage though with a CD you can press Repeat to listen to the same song again. However Vinyl you have to get up and move the needle back into place lol

This is absolutely true. When I stream music, I'm often distracted and stop really paying attention to the music after a while. When I listen to vinyl, I actually sit down and listen (or run around playing air guitar, depending on who I'm listening to). Listening to vinyl feels deliberate. It isn't just background noise. I'm going out of my way to listen to music because that's what I want to do with that time.

Vinyl is a more engaging medium because it records the ultrasonic frequencies that are emitted by musical instruments. CD and Spotify do not have those frequencies.

I think why vinyl is coming back is because (at least for me) having an actual physical thing that plays music instead of just using a streaming service. And vinyl could actually sound good it you have the proper gear, like with anything else.

I have vinyl albums I purchased in 1965. I play them today 2021. I’m simply amazed at how long they last, how much fun it is to read the covers, how many memories they hold.

i´m with you and they don´t have crackles or any noise on top of the music ,party´s were destructive but i used to record reels and at the time everybody who loves music had one at home ,or even those litle portable ones with a speaker and volume, some even had radio but for a litle device it were heavy compared to later portable radio cassette players in stereo, the other day i went for mine maybe early 80´s model and i was amazed by the quality of sound it had ,a philips before the all plastic era
It’s all mental. It helps people appreciate the music more. The ritual makes you more committed to the music. Because you go “i did all this to listen to music, now to sit back and enjoy!”

I'd think that audiophiles should be invested enough in music that they wouldn't need rituals to be fully invested, and non-audiophiles won't use turntables anyway. To me it comes across more as putting more focus on the gear instead of putting more focus on the music, and of course plenty of audiophiles use music to listen to their systems than the other way around.
To me the less I have to do in order to get the music I want to listen to the more of my attention will inevitably be on the actual music. The medium that the music is on doesn't actually have anything to do with the music, it's just a necessary thing to get the music to your home.
I can appreciate vinyl, but I don't think it actually has to do with music but with the other aspect of the audiophile hobby.

@@veganarquia You support the artist by buying digital versions as well. In fact it's te digital format that has allowed artists to distribute music on their own, without needing middle men. As for cover art, my software displays big cover art on my OLED TV when I'm playing music, so I'm getting that as well. The only real thing I'm not getting is the lyrics in book form.
It's not that I don't get the point of having a physical version, I used to prefer that and I have a lot of physical albums (that I don't use anymore though). My point was that I don't think you get closer to music with physical media, you get closer to your hardware. Then again many audiophiles use music to listen to their systems, instead of the other way around, so it certainly fits that modus operandi.

It’s almost as though CDs don’t offer a physical format for a much cheaper prices distributed in more places without less need to buy excess equipment and without the option to convert it to digital formats easily too.
Oh wait. Yeah. Vinyl is cool but all it’s benefits are also provided by CDs for much cheaper dwindling prices. Tables with turn again before records were old news and CDs were all the rage, now it’s reversed. I predict it will reverse again. There’s no real justification to buying into the scam of overpriced vinyl records unfortunately
Try moving 10,000 records whenever you move homes. Been there, done that. Not fun at all: weigh an absolute ton and take up an inaudible amount of space, cost a fortune to do so in both material costs and people costs (did I mention they weigh a ton, removers will charge you the extra to break their backs accordingly), need to be kept on their side not stacked on top of each other.
Oh, and they cost a small fortune to buy new or second hand for the decent stuff, too; because 'you're so cool man buying vinyl in, like, 2019 man' ...sorry, no you're not, you're just wasting more money on getting noise into your ears than needed, and paying for the 'pleasure'. Gave all of them away; as never again want the burden of ownership of such things.
Buy lossless digital, put decent 1000-2000 pixel-width image in the file; enjoy both high quality music and decent artwork wherever you are on the planet (home/driving/holiday/business trip). Without any of the inconvenience of expensive self-destructing-with-plays breakable bits of plastic & cardboard.

My favorite thing about Vinyl is albums. I feel sorry for people coming up in the digital world who only listen to singles. To listen to an album in it's entirety for the first time is a kind of magic. Queen, Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Styx... the list goes on. These are artists that made a collection of songs that together told a story. People need to listen to albums again.

Vinyl is the stick shift of music. Is it better quality? Easier? More convenient? No, no and no. But its the hands on, nostalgia, and involvement that makes it so appealing. Plus album art is just amazing.

Quality, it depends. First pressings of an old albums in good quality will always be better than any other kind of format. Why? Because it's completely analog music. On the other hands if it's not a first pressing or if it's a new album recorded using non-analog method then yeah the quality doesn't matter.
It depends on sound quality, like who made the recorded? How good was the machine that made the record? How well was it mastered? What record player are you playing it with? What stylist are you using? And what speakers/headphones are you using? all these things can have an effect on sound quality.
I'm sorry but stick shift ( at least in UK ) is cheaper faster lighter and more economical I know it is different different for bigger engine's but it has only one advantage which I don't care about
for sure it as more quality in sound but as there are cheap cd players also there were cheap turntables, that´s the main diference, i did notice some schemes made through the years to change people´s minds, i have thousands of cds and recorded at home first the cd-R than the cd-rw those i have maybe almost a thousand , records more than 15.000 ,they appeared first , reels and cassettes ,don´t know but several tv boxes(C.R.T. tv´s)filled with them ,well stored

In a world where technology continues to make things easier and more accessible, the record player forces you to stop, sit down and listen. This isn't the only way to consume music, but in my opinion it's the best way.
Yes! People don't listen to their music anymore. They hear it, but they're not listening.
This is why I listen to Vinyl, but CDs too. If you have a dedicated CD deck (pretty inexpensive) some physical effort is still required, like vinyl, albeit not as much. It's lossless quality, plus you still get a booklet, front and back covers, and something you can hold. Did I also mention used CDs are like 3-8 bucks?

I think it's funny. When I listen to my records, I find that I actually listen to the whole album front to back. where is if I listened to it on my phone, I would want to skip to the next track.

You ain't getting a medal for being a "big music listening fan," you are welcome to continue listening to vinyl but PLEASE don't forget that ALL modern music is produced in a digital studio, is then released on a digital format and THEN is cut to vinyl. So, in your analogue system, you're going from digital to analogue BEFORE the music has even reached your soundsystem... Why not just take the digital audio (from the producer's mixing desk) and play that directly into your DAC instead of cutting it to vinyl to then have a needle pick it back up and amplify it TWICE through a phono stage then a power amp....
And you think you're catching a trick that everyone else is missing whilst you're doing that..... Real comedy! The stylus and cartridge industry are literally relying on you! :')
Slowing down and taking the time to sit down and listen to a full vinyl is by far the best way to listen to music.
I liken vinyl and digital to forms of heating. Would you rather sit in front of an electric heater or a fireplace? They both heat you. A fire may crackle and pop as the flames rise off the wood. They are more effort to light compared to flicking a switch. But a fireplace has it's charm.
I have copies of albums on vinyl and CD and have compared them. To be honest I find it very close as to not being worth worrying about with the equipment I have. But as you said Andrew, listening to vinyl forces you to sit down and enjoy the entire album and not just one song. A good album represents everything that artist/group wanted to say at that point in their career. Not listening to all the songs does them an injustice I feel.

this is why there where more super artists in tye past, a artist is now just another temporarly hit on a playlist, a number.

The ability to skip songs streaming or with CDs is what most people mean when talking about this. With Vinyl, you have to physically make a deliberate action to skip a song much more so than a simple button press. I've discovered so many great songs I would have usually written off because I didn't like the first 15 seconds because I stuck around for the rest and was rewarded. Artists need that.
I don’t get as much as the same effect, but I still definitely get the feel with CD’s as 9/10 times I’m buying a used old CD. And I get the same feeling of how someone else had the CD before me, and the fact that I’m holding a physical item that can actually wear down and die out makes it feel much more human. Then there’s streaming where I get butt fuck nothing.

It's because vinyl includes the ultrasonic frequencies that musical instruments emit. CD and Spotify don't have those frequencies. Studies show that those ultrasonic frequencies have a positive effect on the human mind, so that is why music on vinyl is easy to connect with.
I buy vinyl because artists get paid a decent percentage of the sales.
Shows and merchandising have always been far more profitable than raw album sales so I wouldn't go with that as a reason to keep buying vinyl.

Streaming revenue is tricky because there aren't actual sales, so the numbers are based on an evolving equation. But that equation is about how they count sales, not what percentage the artists gets. If you really want the artist to get more money buy things directly from independent artists.
People collect vinyl for the same reason that people collect trading cards or comic books. People don't collect vinyl just to listen to it or for convenience; they collect it because it's a hobby, and it can be fun. Not everyone is going to think that it's fun, but that's just life.

Luke Randall dude to be honest, I don’t even know. It must’ve meant something at the moment. I think it’s because vinyl is such a simple way of encoding sound.
I'm 47 so vinyl is not a novelty for me. Had vinyl since I was a kid and I never once dusted a record like people do now. I just blew the dust off or quickly wiped it with the nearest cloth like thing I could find.
The best part of vinyl was sitting there reading the sleeve notes or the lyrics as the record played on the first listen. My digital collection is meaningless. There's not connection at all.
There’s so many things about vinyl that further that connection because when you get a vinyl you take it with you for the rest of your life. On your phone you stream thousands of albums and songs every year so you forget most of them. But with vinyl it’s different, wether it was a gift or something you bought after a breakup. You take it with you and every vinyl has a different meaning and history with it, and I think that’s so amazing. You can literally pass it on to your kids.

It also didn't just start making a come back recently, it started in the 00s as MP3s started becoming more common and some people wanted both a digital and physical copy and CDs are not nearly as interesting to collect.
Vinyl is fun. It requires attention, and that's what you want from a hobby. I prefer vinyl over digital but I don't know why some people say it sounds better, that's an obvious lie.

Spotify is just a medium for me to discover new music, and if I like it enough, I buy it... bands like The Dear Hunter, The Reign of Kindo, Monuments, Skyharbor and Thank You Scientist were huge discoveries and now I own most of their records, either CD's or vinyls. I'm 13 and started doing CD and people hate it. "Spotify is so much more practical, get with the times, loser". But streaming is like borrowing the music, and CD, Vinyl, Cassette, and all others are you really owning your music. A physical disc. That the artist made just for you.

I am so happy to see young people getting into the action of collecting vinyl. I think it’s so cool! And plus it creates a great hang out vibe with your friends, love interest, hanging in your room listening to great music while going through the records, admiring the artwork and engage in a conversation about band/artist influences, band stories, gigs, feelings the particular album brings or personal stories it’s connected to etc.
When I was a teenager , in the 90s, I would invest in CDs and later came NAPSTER and the MP3 era, never saw the point of keeping physical format around. Used to tease my dad for buying vinyl and CD. Now I’ve come full circle and getting all the albums that I love on vinyl. No regrets.
So keep the vinyl alive. Way to go guys!

Idk what it is but listening on vinyl somehow makes albums flow better, listening digitally makes albums sometimes feel like a drag. But listening to vinyls grip my attention more for some reason
The biggest advantage to Vinyl - you can't sit in front of your computer writing for 12 straight hours. You have to stand up, walk across the room, and fiddle with bits of plastic, brushes, and center weights. Your eyes get to see something that isn't 24" away. You get the blood flowing in your legs again. You can wander into the kitchen and refill the coffee cup. The worst thing about Vinyl is that you inevitably realize that you zoned out and the damn thing and has been going thunk.....thunk....thunk.... for some time (usually much too long), and it's often at the worst possible moment.
I got into vinyl this year. Mostly for the artwork. I love a beautiful piece of artwork in the covers. It's like having your own little gallery at your bookshelf. I love my Alcest albums for that. The ritual is also cool and kind of relaxing.
One thing that is frustrating in this line of hobby tho is the snobs. Im really sorry, but i cannot affort a turntable that cost about an arm and a half a leg next to my speaker system that i bought after selling my firstborn daughter. Not all lower lever tier stuff are bad. You can be kinda cheap and still sound fine unless you want to hear fucking time and space from your records. It's like the ultimate elitist "who has the biggest tonearm dick contest" Oh you bought your self the biggest one? Well good for you....

Vinyl brings back memories of sitting in my living room as a child with my wonderful father, listening to the Beatles, The Beach Boys, Supertramp, Al Stewart, Gordon Lightfoot, and so many more with the pops and crackles and the warmth, staring at the album covers and liner notes. Amazing memories. My father died in 2009 at 59 from cancer. Those albums are priceless to me.

I've got a whole box of records where barring a few were all £10 but most less. It is an expensive, but if you buy second hand you can sometimes come on a good deal/cheap vinyl. Some have some pops and crackles but mostly nothing major apart from like 2 or 3, but one i got for free.

Yes vinyl sucks...in the most beautiful way. The attraction to digital music initially was convenience. But my relationship to the music I was listening to changed. I soon had a "best of" accumulation from various artists but I stopped exploring whole albums from beginning to end. Often times I liked the lesser known songs on an LP more than those that had mass appeal.
I assure you there were greatest hits compilations on vinyl. And sometimes they sounded bad because they tried to squeeze as many tracks as possible on and the volume and sound quality had to be compromised.
I mean the digital age with Apple Music and TH-cam along with social media broaden my horizon of artists 10 fold. I found my love for so many older artists later in my late teens and early 20s. Beatles, Hendrix, etc. I grew up on 90s County, mid 90s to late 00s rock but once you were able to download music and listen before you (all legal of course. I swear....)
But now rediscovering these artists in a record store or flea market, finding a first press, it truly feels like you have something. I love it. 95% of my vinyl collection is used and that's the way I like it.

Really good vinyl pressing therefore can have a lot more dynamics and hence sound better.
That doesn't mean that vinyl sounds better per sé, it depends on the mastering and pressing.
Nico Meier How? Old pressings on vinyl will still have the exact same mastering as their digital counterparts provided you don’t listen to remasters (which is unimportant since only a fraction of L’s music is remastered anyway). And it’s the same with new pressings.
If it’s mastered poorly it will have poor dynamics regardless of format. Loudness wars isn’t just native to streaming nor are vinyl pressings immune to it.

I'm 65 and grew up with it. We'd spend hours in record shops groping and fondling the LPS and reading the sleeves. Then I'd get paid on Friday and have the money to buy one or two of them. Steely Dan. The Who. The Stones. Little Feat. The Nighthawks. Bonnie and on and on. Prob collected close to 500 LPS. Read every word in every liner note. Diligently handled and cleaned them. Went through several TT's over the years. I had cassette decks so I'd burn ALL of them to have in my car. Huge boxes of tapes in my trunk and a smaller box in the cabin. Then I got a 10-inch Teac Reel to Reel because it was just the coolest piece of gear you could possibly have then. When CD's showed up when I was almost 40.
Then came the flood. They were all on the floor, carefully arranged by type of music and in alphabetical order. 6 inches of water entered my apartment when I was out of town. The mold ruined the sleeves and I threw most of them away. But I kept all the LPs. They're carefully stuffed in pillowcases and then in big boxes. ;). And I now have. a monster of a stereo to enjoy them. One that I could not afford as a young man. Yes, they are a pain. No matter how clean, they still have random pops and noises. And now my kid is in her 30s and has the stereo bug. She just bought an old silver face Pioneer from the 70s and a pair of Heresies. Just got her first TT. When I crap out, she'll get the motherlode. History indeed.

when you listen to something online you're listening to something that can easily be removed off of that platform, something that eventually will be gone, something that you cant listen to without a wifi connection

That's been my criticism too of the whole streaming movement. Another thing to pay a monthly subscription for and as you said, your favorite music won't always be there. Streaming commodifies music tranforming it into impersonal background noise.

Basically its worse in every way, but it has just something cool about it.

Its also very immersive to use old records for old songs (bonus points if its on an old record player) the quality leaves much to be desired, but I think that's kind of what makes people like it. Its the personality that the pops and skips give it that makes me like it. Some people like it, and some people don't, and thats okay! To each their own. It only sucks when you start putting other people down for their music format opinions.

I’m 19, got into vinyl collecting a couple years ago. I enjoy music, I enjoy the album art, I enjoy collecting things I really like, and ya I like to display it. I’m sure people are upset that some kids only do it for the aesthetics or whatever but there’s so many reasons to collect vinyl, why hate on someone cux their reasoning is different from yours. I mean hey if they have it, they might even get into music more since it’s in their hands to begin with

I like vinyl for many reasons, but mostly its one way to not involve myself in something dystopic. Spotify sells you access to the entire cannon of music for like 12.99 a month and that is horrifying. Its a consumer centric model that sucks the appreciation from the music fan. Having everything you want instantly is toxic and it just so happens that media is now digital information. Its turned from "art" into "content". Yes it is that deep.

I can’t stand the people that get precious about vinyl. They have to have the cleanest audiophile pressing to get the clearest sound. That’s not what it’s about. The joy of vinyl is the little pops and crackles that you don’t get with cds or streaming. If you want the purest cleanest sound, stream Mqa.
Half agree, half disagree. I do find people all pretentious about the format annoying, with everything pristine and glistening in their studio apartments listening to "vinyl" on their $3000 whatever. But the snap crackle and pop on records bother the hell out of me too. Yeah, they'll always be there to some extent, but I have a lot of records that are (almost) as quiet as a CD.
Low volume snap crackles and pops are okay - nobody is aware that those are intertwined with essential frequencies you wouldn’t normally get in digital.
That makes the music full and expanded and sometimes what the artist intended to show the listener.
Digital 320kbps is great if ripped straight from vinyl, but too many copies of the file can sound “boxed in”
I will say some music is better in digital, and others in vinyl.
But to generalize and say vinyl sucks, I say f*ck that👎🏻

Nah vinyl is objectively sonically inferior than high definition digital audio. It by design adds distortion that digital audio does not. You can of course build an incredible sounding vinyl audio system, but a high definition digital source will always be superior.
Vinyl's still cool, though. It comes with sleeves with nice big cover art and inserts, and there's a sort of therapeutic effect of putting a record on the turntable and hearing it start to spin. And this isn't exclusive to vinyl, but there's also value in purchasing a physical copy of music -- it makes you value it more and appreciate it more.

I just got my first Vinyl and turntable. I'm 29 so I'm not nostalgic about it but I just like the big album that Vinyl come on, really cool to collect.
It's not intended as a convenient easy musical fix in our soundbite instant gratification society - it's a hobby, an experience, a distraction, a way to get immersed in music and not have it just wash over you, listening, absorbing and paying attention in a world where we don't often pause to take in all the good feelings that music can bring.
Who's to say music still can't be enjoyed like that digitally? You can purchase lossless albums from places like 7Digital or Qobuz and use similar equipment (just swap the record player and leave the amp/dac/speakers alone.) You can't melt away your troubles and enjoy your music while simultaneously hearing details you never would've heard on a vinyl.

Vinyl just hits different, and i love the covers that come with it. And there's just something about going through your vinyls, choosing one, taking the vinyl out and putting it on the player that's so calming to me

I have been collecting vinyl since I was thirteen years old. I’ve always been attracted to vinyl because with digital formatting and streaming, listening has always been a passive experience. Some times you just let your playlist run and you forget that you’re even listening. With vinyl you are forced to stay engage with the music with having to take care of it and flip the record. You’re forced to listen to albums in full, and learn to appreciate an album as an art that was selectively put together. I am a very tactile person and I absolutely love being able to touch the source of music. I love when artists put a lot of production in their albums. With a vinyl cover sleeve being a 12” by 12” canvas that so much can be relayed over. Later in life, I had finally invested in a HiFi vinyl sound system, and the results are amazing. It’s crazy listening to albums that I’ve been listening to for years, on HiFi. It’s like listening for the first time.
I'm sorry you don't have the capacity to listen to an album unless it's on vinyl. Digital is an infinitely better format unless you're stuck in nostalgia.
So you just let it force you to listen to a song rather than use a software which collects information about your taste in music and makes a fitting playlist for you. You like to use a shitty circular object which also takes huge space considering the amount of record it has rather than using a software which has millions of records which you can stream on high quality anywhere and takes much less space and money.
Now mister why don't you light lamps rather than use a bulb in your house. You are so nostalgic of an era that you haven't experienced.
@@mikechivy I got into records about 5 years ago, it's definitely more engaging and has nothing to do with nostalgia for me. There's something special about being able to hear things in such a physical caveman like way while plastic is being assaulted by a tiny sharp needle

Ye. I'm fanatical about pre-late 1940s big band and jazz music. If I went the records way, I'd have a collection of maximum 500 songs mostly on 78s housed in rather boring plain jackets with no information on the artists and recordings and, headache of finding a turntable(and parts) to play the 78s. With CDs, I do have a collection of well over 50,000 songs and lots of booklets to read on the recording sessions, musician lineup and backgrounds, etc. And try having the complete Bach compositions on records (probably needs 1,000 to 1,200 vinyls) - you'd need an entire small room just to store this one collection.
It is really about the format...not the music. I could never listen to rock unless on an 8 track tape.

It's the inconvenience of vinyl that forces you to connect physically, mentally, and spiritually to the music. It's kind of like a parent bonding with their new baby. Babies are a lot of inconvenience and work to keep safe. But it's that delicate interaction that causes you to make a deep connection with the experience, both physically and psychologically.

I started collecting CDs, cassettes, and learned self-motivated various instruments due to my love of music long before I started collecting vinyl. I love listening to and making music. But, think whatever you want of me - makes no difference to me.
You are taking my words too literal. I of course was using an analogy the general casual music fan could relate to. To clarify, playing a vinyl record becomes a ritual due to all the steps it takes to listen to it. Many people today merely have to push play to have a never ending playlist if they desire. The mindless process of simply pressing play often leads many people (not myself) to experience the music as background noise while they do something else.
Whereas with vinyl, you have to be more present. Generally, the psychology behind it is that since people have to do several delicate steps to play vinyl, they want to listen more carefully because of all those steps they had to do to listen to it. Again I speak generally. I personally listen to music deeply no matter the format. Though vinyl is my preferred format.

Yet, even though going to public theaters has become increasingly more difficult, especially during a pandemic, many film buffs still want the experience of going to a theater to see a film. Even though it is more inconvenient than simply watching it at home. I'm of course referring to how many recent films have concurrent releases in theaters and online streaming services. Yes it'd be cheaper and more convenient to simply watch it at home. But many people like myself would rather see it in public theaters.
The whole process of looking up showtimes, driving there, buying popcorn, watching it with other like-minded moviegoers, etc. is preferred vs. watching in my state of the art home theater. Which rivals public theaters in quality, but on a private scale. In this sense it's the ritual of going to a public theater that is appealing. I feel the same about the process/ritual required to listen to vinyl.
There's a ton of other analogies that can express my point. The way some people prefer going to a restaurant vs. ordering delivery from that same restaurant. Or how some people prefer to go to a public gym instead of working out at home. Or how many people prefer to study for an exam in a library vs. at home. Yes the preferred methods in these examples are more inconvenient and often more costly. Yet, to the people who prefer those methods, it is worth it.
I agree with this except for the part about inconvenience. I don't find vinyl use, storage or maintenance inconvenient at all. It's just part of the process of listening to music. I also don't clean my records with any fluids or cleaners outside of a soft anti-static carbon brush. But I do clean my stylus with sandpaper and silly putty. Not actual sandpaper, but an emory paper designed for cleaning turntable styli. My records remain in good shape.
Going to a theater to watch a movie is also inconvenient especially when you can (eventually) easily watch that same movie on your smart phone. But, its not the same experience. I prefer vinyl for the experience it provides. Like you, I wonder who owned used vinyl records before me. A used record is a story of every needle drop, every time is was removed from the case, how it was stored. My records sound like my records. Not like my neighbor's. The same thing can't be said for digital. Vinyl has a personality. And with that personality comes appreciation and a connection I believe just can't be achieved with digital, including CD's.

@@brianmoore581 Precisely. And stampers degrade with each pressing. Not to mention slight variations of materials from one pressing plant to another. I am not talking about HUGE differences here. But enough to allow me to typically identify the pressings I own. A worn down or cheap stylus can also affect future plays of a vinyl record. Like I said, it just adds to its personality. And to some, it's dumb or overrated. They have that right to think that. But to us vinyl collectors, its what makes it fun and worthwhile.

I own a pretty good stereo system. I listen to records, tapes, CDs and SACDs. Wherever the music is, that's where I go. Many things I have exist on only one format. I love them all, even the lowly cassette tapes. I do prefer the CDs and especially the SACDs for sound quality and because they don't degrade with each playing. My digital player also happens to be much nicer than my record player or tape deck. Anyways, enjoy your music, whatever it is, wherever you find it, whatever format, whatever you listen through. Vinyl Bozz it is annoying to buy a record for good money and it sounds bad. Thats the real downside of vinyl but when it sounds good its the best i think.

Vinyl left, and it's making a comeback now. Between 1997 and 2020, most albums did NOT get a vinyl release.
I obsessively add high res album art to all of my digital music. And I use a custom music player that fills literally half the UI with the album art. (foobar2000)
I add lyrics to the metadata on every track I can. I make sure everything is perfectly named and organized.
And if I have a single song that belongs on a full album, I'll get the whole album so it's not a singled out track by itself.
I think the reason I go through all this with my digital music is for the same reasons you explained in this video. Never really thought of it before.
Castin I used to do this with my iPod. Then it got damaged and had to format it. I lost all that. It was awful.
I think that even damaged cardboard cases are playable... You'd have to be victim of a fire or something worse for your vinyls to became useless.
And hell, even if the artist didn't include the lyrics, you can print them and store those two pieces of paper inside...

I used to be obsessed with playlists created by certain criteria and remembering what I was doing during the time I first listened to a song/album.

All you need is some evidence.
well yeah, vinyl is clunky and takes up space and depending on what kind of wax you prefer it can cost alot of money. But then again, collecting figurines, books (art books, literature, tv guides, etc...), musical equipment, CD's, cassettes, DVD's/VHS/Laserdisc etc... all take up immeasurable amounts of space and cost too. It's all really about how far you are willing to go with it. and of course, wear and deterioration of materials is a legitimate concern. nothing is forever, stones erode and rust never sleeps.
I am a collector of many of these things, LP's included. And it's the compromise i'm willing to make. is it dumb? maybe. But i like the physicality of objects. It feels like it's a lot less likely of it being torn away from me because while there is a lot of digital media out there, and some of it can be put on a hard drive, majority of people probably don't do that, and are completely at the mercy of streaming services. But if your internet doesn't work* or lets say Sony BMG or any major label decides to take down a specific artist you like bc of licensing reasons, you are left in the dark. and there is a lot of music out there that hasn't made it into the digital world either, albeit that gap is closing day by day.
(* granted, you have offline playlists and all which mediates this problem)
not to mention, the sometimes godawful job they do with digital remasters ruining the magic of certain artists or releases. and the whole losless/uncompressed thing is kind of odd, considering that most people can't even hear the difference between a 128kpb MP3 file (CD) or 16 bit wav unless they really pay attention or have the right hardware (so, audiophiles, which are a niche community), it's more bandwidth to stream, and more hard drive space, and buying the right headphones & amp etc...
but hey you do you on that one. Theres positives and negatives to both sides of these things. There is no absolute perfect way to enjoy media, that comes down on a person to person basis. this also doesn't mean you can't have your hand in multiple cookie jars and taste around for what you like. most of us use a computer or phone or tablet anyway, so why not get the most out of everything?
and of course, the wellspring of culture that comes out of the idea of reinventing, and reincorporating it, with many genres using it as a sampling source & for some ardent Oldhead DJ's (and a couple of young ones or specific genreheads) still their main go-to, even with the inconvenience of not only dragging out a tonne of wax but hardware included. And to get more genre specific, with the culture of hiphop, Turntablism turning it into an instrument to an extent. with the possibility of altering a listening experience on the fly with a slight flick of the pitch shift or messing with the EQ or pressing it thru a sampler is all a much more kinetic experience, which, unless you have virtualDJ or Serato or any DJ'ing equipment on all the time. is something you can't really emulate on the fly digitally.
So does vinyl suck? yeah, probably, but then again everything does if you hold it to the same standards. Nothing is absolute or beyond reproach. it really comes down to personal preference. i like all kinds of media, and believe even the most benign things that i might not like deserve preservation. Because everything means something to someone.
I have 7000 songs on my hard drive (most are high res). I also have multiple backup copies of everything. No way a recording company or streaming service is going to stop me from listening to the music I love.
I grew up in the CD era so missed Vinyl completely. When I handled Vinyl at my University nothing about it over-awed me. CDs have always been better for my lifestyle & ears.
Couldn't agree more. I have never felt the need to listen to a CD from start to finish, at least not often. With a vinyl record I feel the need and the responsibility to stop and listen to it. Its an experience. I'm only buying records now. I love vinyl records so much.
Good grief. You must have been so much listening to rubbish if you couldn't handle listening to a CD from beginning to end. As a vinyl buyer since 1972, I say it's not the format but the content that makes you want to listen.

The point was, vinyl is a format that, while I know you can skip songs, isn't nearly as pressing a button. When I put on a record I listen from start to finish. I still am trying figure out where my original comment upset you. I've listened to my favorite albums from start to finish, on both cd and vinyl. Ive listened to every Aerosmith, Kiss, Megadeth, and many more from start to finish. But with a record, I find myself listening to albums I wouldn't normally from start to finish. It's fine that you dont understand but dont be so condescending.

That in itself is hilarious and indicated an attention span issue and content quality issue, which perhaps indicates you don't listen to recordings that engage with a beginning, middle and an end. Such examples of which might be several albums by Pink Floyd. I can honestly say I have never "skip songs" in my life. I really don't think you grasped the concept of the "album" as something that was designed to be listened to from beginning to end and where a lot of work had been done with getting the song sequencing right - as was the case with The Beatles and a thousand other top recording artists.

You are entirely wrong. I've been buying records for so long and actually know them inside out - that I understand the sequencing - which is something you so very obviously do not. Pity, because that's part of the album concept - on how the songs flow -or don't flow as sometimes is the case. Never mind, it's just not your forte. Maybe you should just have iTunes or something that offers instant entertainment.

I love vinyl because you have to physically play it, it sounds killer, it's more raw sounding but IMO, yet, it is just an amazing listening experience.
Vinyl creates so much attention that you listen way more over CD and downloads and IMO that is not a bad thing. Vinyl also offers more of a rawer/truer sound over digital/downdoads IMO.
You get all the pops and cracks sounds with most vinyl. Many may hate that but most of the time it is more of the true analog sound.
Either way, love what you love IMO but nothing better than opening up a vinyl gatefold, etc.. and experiencing a album in vinyl to me. Downloading does not have this personal hands on experience or sound, not even close.
