This big Yew is really nice looking! Most of them are a nice orange brown color, but I've seen some that are almost as dark as walnut and some as light as western hemlock! You never know what your going to really get with yew because of the way it grows, very slowly in the understory for centuries. I live near Estacada Oregon, and some of the yews that burned in the 2020 fire were over 28 inches in diameter!! It's a real shame that they are so sensitive to fire. Most of the trees have between 20 - 40 rings per inch and very dense and hard! Pacific Yew is the ultimate wood in my opinion. Beautiful, hard, strong, and flexible.

You are correct, it's such beautiful wood. I'm hoping to integrate some of it into my house at some point.

@Cascadia Lumberworks nice! Great idea. It's very stable once seasoned from my experience. It's been my favorite wood ever since I discovered it about 10 years ago. I work with it a lot and I've never been poisoned or any ill health effects from touching it and being around the dust all the time. I do wear a dust mask or a respirator just to be safe.

as you probably know some years ago Bristol Meyers had a contract harvesting bark from pacific yew.I believe it was called taxol and was used in breast cancer treatment. If you do a little research on Yew I'm pretty sure the sawdust can can cause severe respiratory resulting in heart conditions. I have worked with yew quite a bit and must agree when dried it is extremely hard.Good luck on your project. In case you are wondering this is my wifes account. Dwain Anderson

I do remember that. Not to long ago there were some people up on ours and our neighbors land looking for Yew bark. We only have 5-10 here, but they are tiny. I didn’t know about the sawdust. Cedar is also a bit dangerous. I should I wear a mask when sawing it.

Hello Cascadia...I have a few scruffy Pacific Yew logs that came out of my peat bog. They are carbon dated at 800 years old. Going to have them milled into slabs. Hopefully will have good results. I'm in Puyallup, Wa.

That's neat! I wonder what they will look like after being under the peat bog for so long. I bet they will be really neat and maybe a darker color? Maybe send me a pic once you get them cut up. I would love to see the resulting slabs.

@@CascadiaLumberworks Here's what they look like now. Looks like some were split in half but I think what happened is when they fell in the bog the bottom half of the tree was preserved in the peat and the part exposed to the elements deteriorated. Won't let me attach pix. Will try another way...

Milling in the rain is not really much fun. The sawdust sticks to everything. I guess the good thing is that it keeps the dust down.

Are the growth rings too close together to count than?

Kinda, but I think it could be done. If one took lots of time to count them. I saved an end so I can at some point though..
