I think Kickstarter isn't a bad idea (See Undertale, Hollow Knight, etc.) but sometimes things happen behind the scenes that ruin things, like mismanagement, technical difficulties or personal stuff. It's better to see it from that angle than as you buying the product: Think about all the games that get financed, developed and fall apart. For every AAA game that maked tons of money, you get things like Anthem that are a complete moneyhole. That's basically what things like Mighty No.9 are, a promising investment that went sour. I don’t think they’ll be able to fully deliver. Right now, it’s 35 weeks total (Kickstarter), and it’ll probably reach a 10 week epilogue. That’s 45 weeks or 145 songs total. But then you have to factor in the playable characters (having to add 10 more playable characters) and that means that you’ll have to have a separate voice track for playing a song with every character. Counting BF as one, that’s 1,595 separate audio files. Jesus. Oh and it doesn’t stop there. With the erect difficulty, they’re going to remix every song. It’s given that they’ll probably re use the voices for these, but that’s still an extra 145 tracks. 145 + 1595 = 1740. I highly doubt they’ll be able to really do this. A small team like this. I hope it’s handled well but I predict it won’t be. And that’s not counting the mobile port, the custom character creator, the sharing network, and online multiplayer.

Agreed. As a Banjo-Kazooie fan, I enjoyed Yooka-Laylee, even with its flaws. It’s not perfect but it’s nowhere as bad as any of the games in this video. It even has an amazing follow-up (The Impossible Lair) and lots of cameos in other games, so you know it’s not a failure at all. 😊
Because Yooka-Laylee isn't a bad game. It's really good, I'll even say. It has some flaws that I'm not too fond of, but I can never say I hated my time playing it. I actually had fun and even 100%ed it, which is something I rarely do personally unless I enjoy the game that much. It's sudo-sequel, Impossible Lair, is simply just phenomenal. There's a lot to appreciate, and it's sad there are some blind Banjo fanboys who refuse to admit the positives and say Yooka-Laylee doesn't get "x" or "y" right, when Banjo-Kazooie itself is outdated in retrospect

So, this is an edit, and I stated that out of the 4 million dollars that Comcept only had 1.6 million to work with due to Kickstarter fees, but it looks like I fucked up. kirby1781 in the replies checked the video and confirmed I made a mistake. The pinned comment on Matt's video says there was an error on his end about the cut taken from Kickstarter, and, according to someone that told kirby1781, the actual cut may be either 5-10% or 30-35%. Doing the math, that means the cut potentially taken by Kickstarter could result in the amount remaining being anywhere from 2.47 million dollars to 3.61 million dollars, going by the rough amount being 3.8 million without rounding it to the nearest million. Matt also doesn't say what the actual amount remaining was, so we've only got the alleged cuts mentioned to go by, for now. So, for now, let's just say that we don't properly know how much Kickstarter took, and I am terribly sorry for my fuck up.
Kickstarter takes THAT much? Seriously, it is screwed that, if what you are saying is true, the makers of the kickstarter don't even get HALF of the profit. They deserve at least that.
So I checked the video. The pinned comment is from the uploaded saying the put 40% was an error on his end. He doesn't say what the actual amount is, but someone said they take about 5 - 10%, or a 30 - 35% difference.
I'd argue that Yogventures should be #1. I've heard the full story of that game from DJ Slopes, who specializes in Kickstarters that wound up failing or even outright being a scam (Kickscammers as he calls it), and it was a mess to say the least. There are some real horror stories out there that frankly, even Mighty No. 9 looks good by comparison because it at least delivered even if it wasn't good. I've backed a number of Kickstarters and they've mostly been successful. A few have been late, which is understandable, but only one has really done a runner on me (I hope). Yes, there are horror stories out there, but that doesn't reflect badly on the site itself.

It's kinda like how people think Yuji Naka was the one behind Sonic when he was only really the lead programmer. Which's still an important role, but stilll.
Star Citizen started production the year I started college. I graduated over 5 years ago and the game is still being presented as disjointed, disconnected modules.
10:30 part of the reason the kickstarter was supported so well was b/c capcom had massive heat from the gaming community and a lot of people supported it to spite capcom. It started off when capcom canned the two games he announced during his departure, one of which was hyped up to be a game that the community had an active role in it's development and one of the capcom employees passed the blame on the fans themselves for it's cancellation. things began to steamroll once they gained a bad reputation in the community for rehashing games multiple times to make a quick buck, butchering fan favorites, on disc dlc, dlc wall locking a true ending in a game and their ever so infamous dropping darkstalkers because it did not sell a million copies.
Potential countdown: top games that don’t match their titles anymore. Is the Evil residential anymore? How many Emblems of Fire even matter in their games these days?
Well, the Fire Emblem in Fates is the Omega Yato, the strongest version of Corrin's sword, while in Three Houses it's the Crest of Flames, AKA the crest Byleth, Sothis and Edelgard have. So it is at least somewhat important in recent games.
@@amirgarcia547 I am quite aware of how they figured how to name drop it into the recent games. Though really, even those item’s real relevance is still tenuous.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that the Yogventures dev ran off with the money. The way the Yogscast was treated by the devs was dreadful as we later found out. I never backed it, but I feel awful for everyone involved
Mighty No. 9 bombed so hard that it "Butterfly Effected" Mega Man back into life. It makes me wonder though... If Yookah-Laylee and Bloodstained failed just as hard, to the point they'd have managed to bring back Banjo & Kazooie from Microsoft and Castlevania from Konami, would you be disappointed? Or would you be relieved to see these series back? In other words, do we actually like these spiritual successors or are we just filling in the gaping hole that these series left in out gaming hearts?
Honestly. everyone who cared about B/K left Rare to form Playtonic after they were required by Microsoft, and Konami barely does anything with their IPs nowadays. So I doubt those series would've been revived even if those games failed.
Just remember, for every disaster to come from Kickstarter, there are still many more success stories. Such examples include Undertale, Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, Shantae Half-Genie Hero, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, A Hat in Time and Lisa the Painful. And those're only the ones I can think of from the top of my head! As for upcoming games, Friday Night Funkin' looks promising and currently has a Kickstarter for the "full-ass game."
I was curious about whatever happened with curiosity. I remember playing the bubble wrap simulator back in high school and never knowing what happened to it. Had no idea that it was helmed by one of the most infamous people in the gaming industry.
One of my friends has constantly been playing Star Citizen for the past three months, and when he told me that the game was still in development, I was like “okay.” But now I’m watching this video, and I’m like “ohhhhhh nooooooooooo.” 😬
The weird thing is that Comcept worked with Sony to release the legitimately brilliant, grotesquely gorgeous, and extremely well designed Soul Sacrifice at the beginning of the Vita's life cycle, and it's basically an arcadey Monster Hunter clone with Dark Soul's (or rather, Berserk's) aesthetics, and magic system which seems at least somewhat inspired by Mega Man.
Unsung Story. The final fantasy tactics spiritual successor that had likely the worst development team behind it. First problem? It was being developed by playdek, A company that makes board games and card games, and not videogames. They were a terrible choice for any game. After a while it looked like the game would never be released. Then Little Orbit took over development. They are still not the best people for this type of game as they made mostly licensed games up to that point. But at least they are trying. They did finally release an early access version of the game last year but no one cares.
What sucks for me about Mighty No. 9 is that I love the concepts, and call me someone with low standards, but I enjoyed the story (or at least its lore) and a few of the characters stuck to me (mostly the Mighty robots idk why). But as we all know, the execution was just awful. All that potential, wasted! But I wouldn't mind if someone tried to do a fan remake of it with improvements to the gameplay.
This list made me laugh because I backed #1, #4, and #5. I'm not upset about any of it, since that was part of the risk of Kickstarter. I got a few hits, and a lot of misses.
I'd mention Dreamscape as a possible contender.....but that's a scam that's advertising a game that doesn't exist and every single asset wasn't even made by the "developers".
Kickstarter games have become real gambles you either get a Triple seven or a bar. Sometimes jerks that take your money and disappear off the face of the earth like the “developer” of Drift stage and Jack and Casie.
I feel like it's important to follow a video like this with success stories from Kickstarter. Yes plenty have used the site to line their own pockets, but plenty have also used it to make beautiful games (and other things) a reality.
One thing that all these games except Ant Simulator share is Overambition. You should definetly not start your game making career with a huge ambitious project. Thanks for not putting yooka laylee on this list, I really dont think it's a bad game
Your opinion on the sequel?
@@Ramsey276one sequel is great if you like donkey kong
@@danielmales123 okay

Hollow knight
Whenever someone brings up Star Citizen I remember that I once did a recording for a band where the drummer was a designer for that game. Guy formerly worked at Crytek and was rly passionate about it, sucks to see the game turned into this tbh
Turned into what? I played the game not too long ago and it was fine. Maybe not content complete, but it was fine.
@@nnooooooooooooo Oh come on, we watched the same video. You‘re probably aware of its reputation. I‘m not saying anything about the quality, it‘s just become a money sink that‘s usually only talked about negatively

I can only wonder if there were any underfunded and cancelled projects with great potential that we'll never get to play because of how these flops are some of the first things that are associated with the idea of crowdfunded games...
There definitely are, this even happens with big companies too.
I remember Inafune was starting to be a little trigger happy with Kickstarter when Mighty was in development haha
As in making a Kickstarter for a completely different game, that being Red Ash. Which definitely turned out very well (not.)
@@amirgarcia547 And campaigns for cartoons of both series :/
Goddus is absolutely no1. But I'd put Star citizen as no2. I backed the kickstarter, but even if it would come out tomorrow with all of the promised features, I don't even want to play it anymore. All my excitement is completely gone.
I legitimately feel like that game is a money pit at this point. I'm not a backer, but I followed it from the beginning and seeing how little has actually came from it after all these, but all the money pumped into it every year from ship sales make me convinced it will never release and I it does will be far from an actual finished game.
Well, at least you can make "movies" for free so long as you already have a camera and a willing crew.
So far I’ve only backed 3 crowdfunding campaigns:
Justice Beaver on SNES - I backed the cart only perk
Phantom Gear on Mega Drive - I backed the cart only perk
Stone Protectors DVD box set - I backed the digital comic & Mega Drive ROM perk
From what I've played of it , I don't entirely mind Mighty Number 9.
Excuse meWUT
THAT IS *NOT* ACCEPTABLE!
So I checked the video. The pinned comment is from the uploaded saying the put 40% was an error on his end. He doesn't say what the actual amount is, but someone said they take about 5 - 10%, or a 30 - 35% difference.
@@kirby1781 I'll edit to clarify your correction, and I'm sorry for inadvertently spreading misinformation.
@@Ramsey276one Check kirby1781's second reply and read my now edited comment.

I've been saying for years that Keiji Inafune wasn't the driving force behind Mega Man... One time, it got me banned from a Discord server.
It's kinda like how people think Yuji Naka was the one behind Sonic when he was only really the lead programmer. Which's still an important role, but stilll.

Will do
Star Citizen started production the year I started college. I graduated over 5 years ago and the game is still being presented as disjointed, disconnected modules.

Mighty No. 9 was the first, and last, time I ever donated to a kickstarter.
It wasn't that bad right?
People take note rabbidluigi needs his own game
As one of the original backers my literal money is on Half life 3 coming out before Star citizen.
The fact that fallout the Frontier had decent space combat before start citizen launched came out.

Good point
Makes me wonder what Bayonetta 3 will be like Considering that first trailer...
For what it’s worth, Three Houses has you fight under the banner of the Crest of Flames, which is a literal fire emblem

During this video I got an ad for a KickStarter project of a VR game where you sit round a table and play D and D.
Literally VR for a game where you imagine the action instead of seeing anything.
Tbh there are VR games of boardgames so a tabletop game could be fun.

I'D FORGOTTEN ABOUT YOGVENTURES
OUCH
4:55 Loved seeing AndDude's page.
@@amirgarcia547 I know. That's why I said "If". It's all in the realm of a hypothesis.

Oh No, Peter Molyneux. When his name uttered, a Guru sure follows suit.

Ah Yogventures, still stings today and a common meme joke in yogs communites
I'm obsessed with the character design at 1:07, what game is that?
Bad Kickstarter campaigns and Peter Molyneux jokes? What is this a Guru Larry video?
Oh.. That one game that made everyone cry like a anime fan on prom night?
Kickstarter itself is not the problem. It's the people who use and abuse Kickstarter to make a quick buck.
I’ve played Godus before, and it was pretty fun, but I had no idea about the backstory behind it
Unsung Story.
Star citizen.. or the future of NFT'S. in gaming.
Gosh, I forgot about curiosity. I had it downloaded for 30 minutes, said “This is dumb”, and haven’t thought about it since, until now of course.
Wow I used to play godus a lot years ago. I had no idea the backstop behind it. That's crazy!

Ever heard of Mighty Gunvolt Burst? It's basically Mighty No. 9 but good, and you can even play as Gunvolt (Beck has more interesting stuff though)
Just now watched this... You OPENED with Star Citizen? Whew boy.... Thats a landmine and a half.
Never thought I'd see yogventures in one of your videos. Makes sense for this one though.
Kickstarter games have become real gambles you either get a Triple seven or a bar. Sometimes jerks that take your money and disappear off the face of the earth like the “developer” of Drift stage and Jack and Casie.
You know Mighty No. 9 was bad when the one game to beat it in being bad was Peter doing his over-exaggerating to the nth degree.
And i know, the creators of 3 of these games are not "newbies", But when you leave a big publisher behind you need to stop thinking like an "elite" and start thinking like an Indie.
