    It's amazing the amount of different ways to use shipping containers!! My husband and I are building our own house by ourselves using a 40ft shipping container! We can see a lot of pros on building with shipping containers. We are in love with every single step of the building.

    Floors don't need replacing if you buy your can right.
    Seal them is all.
    Do not cut openings with abrasive disks. It is very dangerous or fireman construction saw!
    Use plasma! This is the best option.
    20' containers can easily be placed with a platform tow truck. 2 tons is nothing for one of these.
    Paint them with light reflexive colours. This reduces heat build up. A roof over it helps considerably.
    Ventalation very important or they will hold moisture.keep air moving.
    They are near bullet proof.
    A tree can fall on it.
    9 Richter quake might knock it off its foundation but easy to jack up again.
    Fire resistant.
    I live in a comfortable container home with my family.
    I have done some fun homes structures with seacans over the past 17 years.
    There are more positives than negatives depending on what region of the world you want to do this.

    Well done! It is nice to know that I already knew all of this information and intend to utilize a planner and architect, as well as a consultant and contractor. Although do it yourself ears usually balk at such accommodations, I strongly believe we will actually save time and money doing things properly. We also intend to use new containers made for the residential and hobby market.

    These are available here near Abilene TX for about 2k for a fairly long one,my neighbor just bought one and put on a concrete base on nearby property formerly left from a large garage/ shed building.I am loving this idea so much for a future option as an older gal when I am forced to be without my invalid husband in the eventual near future.We own our wood house and lot but the repairs and constant upkeep on this falling apart house are not feasible and come faster than my energy and limited income can tolerate.I think this is for me, perfectly ideal in so many areas..The climate challenges are hurdles but research and practical solutions are out there,as simple as the large trees I have for shading it in the summer or building a welded separate canopy over the top.I love the person alization and budget angles though.Plenty of professionals in my area out of work or happy for some side jobs in my area too.

    The four corners and structurally sound, but the roof can not take a huge snow load. We used these all the time in construction and the roof started buckling with 4’ of snow on them. Plus they are HOT as hell in the summer. You may have the shell, but you still need to frame out the inside and add insulation to it.

    • @rfor4737
      @rfor4737 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why couldn't you insulate the outside so that it wouldnt take up the limited sq footage inside, then cover the insulation with some sort of tight fabric as in the Yipp house. Danish design. Video I saw said that waterproofed it too.

    Is it bad that I see shipping containers as the basis of a small rural fortress?
    Like, some shipping containers, angle/plate steel, rebar, and concrete, you can make something that can stand up to gunfire, debris, fire, and severe weather patterns. All for probably cheaper than a conventional building built to the same standard.
    Much more labor intensive though, particularly if you must hire a welder.

    Why dont most if not all people in the coastal city's around places like Florida, the Carolina's, the islands, the gulf have built more of these especially if they can be hurricane proof?

    • @47ronin61
      @47ronin61 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Michalis Xyran Probably because of the large number of home builders & developers won't allow it here in Fl.
      The financial loss would be felt by financial institutions simply because it would be "too affordable" for many looking to relocate here & seeking to find affordable & median priced homes. Now, try getting plans & permits approved by the local counties, that's where the 4 letter words comes in, all day everyday untill you get a resolution..lol
      Once and idea of affordable homes could become more readily accessible to the masses, codes will be re-written to hinder the process and therefore drive prices up, just for the aggravation alone will satisfy conventional home builders & developers, only because "they didn't think of it 1st"

    • @jeffmathers355
      @jeffmathers355 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a new concept and the building industry is very slow to adapt, partly because of the fear of the liability associated with unproven methods.
      Also, as a Floridian, I can tell you that mold will grow on ANYTHING down here. Maybe using steel, which absorbs heat, condenses moisture, and rusts needs some additional thought before we use it in a hot, humid, salt water climate.
      I'm always optimistic about alternative solutions like this, but it's too new to just DIY it without a lot of consideration for climate/ moisture control. Also, without reinforcement, it wouldn't necessarily be any more hurricane proof than standard builds (though it would probably be cheaper to make it so). Cheers.

    • @NRALifer1
      @NRALifer1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no such thing as Hurricane proof, like earth quake, blast & bullet, the correct term is resistant. And with that comes levels of. Dade Co Fla has the toughest codes in the country, it's the standard for all to follow for hurricane resistance. But even with the codes, any structure could end up being removed from its current location with the right natural disaster. That being said, the Gov does have nuke resistant bunkers for the political elete. But let's face it, they haven't been tested to see if they'll keep them from glowing? A cat 5+ hurricane or tornado could make these containers a reef or yard art inland depending on wind direction. I had thought about digging a cpl into a hillside on my prop. Leaving only a small 4'-6' walk way into it. Covering the containers on 5 sides and 1/2 of the open end. But I don't think code allows that. Ive got a mtl bldg & for me to put an apt in it, requires me to have windows and an additional door to the exterior. So much for security with that having to be done. But the Fire marshell doesnt care about your things, only lives of those inside the structure. Yes, these are far better than16" on ctr, nail gun nailed siding on stick built elevated observation platforms. But mother nature can remove most anything we can pop up, especially where her full effect can hit it square in the nose. If it's your time, don't care where you are or what your surrounded by, your gone. But no need in pushing the envelope closer by playing in the hwy!

    This is what I DO NOT LIKE ABOUT CONTAINER HOUSES. You buy the container, frame the inside and then spray foam for insulation, now you have a cut your space by at least a foot if not more. If I am going to build something that I have to spray foam for insulation, why not build a MONOLITHIC HOME INSTEAD? Here I inflate the balloon and then on the inside spray polystyriene then place rebar in a grid form run all electrical, then shoot concrete on the inside or you can do rebar on the outside and shoot concrete on the outside as well. I'm sure container houses are cozybut lets face it, after the tornados and the fire's the container house is gone but the MONOLITHIC HOME will still be standing. I also won't be installing air conditioning or heat or shingles or paint. No bugs, termites, ants or mold and if I get cold, light a few candles. It does not take massive amounts of energy to heat or cool a MONOLITHIC HOME. It stays about 70 degree's year round and when the tornados go by and every house in the area are gone the MONOLITHIC HOME will still be standing

      Very slow temperature rise is required to slowly vaporize residues of moisture left in material (clay=soil+water), then nominal steady 900-1200 °C for several hours is required for curring the material hard, and almost the same time for cool the finished product down..
      Not to mention "glazing" requires the same as above mentioned owen session again, but with lover temperature 750-900°C if i remeber correctly..
      Al²O³ * 2H²O * 2SiO³ "average" clay chemical substances.. Pls correct me, get not uppset if the facts are wrong..

    Says a house can withstand harsh conditions but then says it's a hot box or freezer in extreme climates. Which is it?

    if there are more than 11M containers why they are not cheap, $2000 its not cheap, when most people use more than 2 thats $4K just in containers, plus materials, labor, land etc, at the end you pay doble or trilple for a tiny house than for a nice 1500sf condo/apartment or a small house!

    No. 1. Con is likely financing as a house is very difficult to obtain. If the construction is modular and possible to relocated is might not even be recognized as a house Or no. 1 con is sustainability question mark. There seems to be very different views on the sustainability using shipping containers as a building material. We need proof on life cycle costs and environmental impact which no one seems to be able to provide. It is taken that the containers are available. But would it be better to have a law that empty containers should be reused as containers, how would this impact the sustainability?
    Alternative, imagine to build a steel box from scratch locally already fittet, insulated and strengthen for the requirements - how would the sustainability calculations be then?

    Like video but knowing how or what to use for insulation and the wall sweating could be a health hazard especially in northern climates I found your video intreging but there are serious problems in using them in changing climates it seems slab mounting in the north but not sure on sewage hook up and water in

      Did you write without punctuation on purpose? I doesn't help make it clear, but it does seem to be the written equivalent of the robo voice. Good pun!

    Pros: I've seen one withstand a category 5 hurricane with only broken windows.
    Cons: Depending on the build design, most cities would not allow you to build it on residential lots due to it being an eyesore.

    Next time, pay a professional voice actor $50 to read your script, or do it yourself. The robo-voice is very annoying. Other than that, it's a good video. Thanks for making it.

    Cost of transport & positioning may require specialized equipment; e.g. cranes & trucks, & flatbed trailers pushing up value beyond marginal cost of containers. Heavy weight may require considerable foundation work,e.g. septic & pillar support.
