Wow, what a fantastic performance by Haley and Patrik!! That mic definitely captured the subtleties and details of the vocals and the acoustic. I'm super impressed with it, and the app capabilities would definitely be something to experiment with! Great Demo Joe!!! Now I have to start saving money...
I'm a big fan of C-214 and C-414 mics, but I must say, based on what I am hearing from your session I think I am in love with the 818... and I'm with you, I definitely want a pair. I can see a great advantage to being able to record the front capsule to get the direct sound from instruments and the back capsule to have a bit of the room to mix in as needed. What I am very curious about is... if while using them as a stereo pair for drum over heads, will using the back capsules give a nice room sound to mix with the kit.
Such a phenomenal song and this was a wonderful performance. I also like that the mic is a touch warm, so sibilance wasn’t an issue, and I like the depth created by getting front and back capsule recordings. I did adjust the phase a few samples, but that’s no big deal. I think I might grab a pair
One mic to rule them all and in the studio bind them!!!!! ( Lord of the rings? ) That mic sounds real classy and smooth. Great review Joe, as always. Thanks very much and a big thanks to the PLAP team
Awesome performance with an awesome mic. I own one along with the matching OC18 for two years now, and it is my #1 goto choice for large diaphragm condensers. In some cases I switch to a JZ Black Hole for certain vocals or instruments, but the OC818 is the single mic I would take to a desert island.
This is one incredible microphone. I think it sounds way better than the current versions of the C414 or even the older BULS models. Versatility is out of the park!
I have a pair of the AA O16s that have the same capsule and they are a great bargain. They remind of the older 414's, TLII's. They are cardioid only, which is usually fine.
got its litle brother; the OC16 last year - as here the acoustic guitar really shine and hardly have to eq apart from some room corrections - I’m sure I am picking up this mic is even better with vox too.
The plugin works on any mic and recording love imported / captured. There's the mic and then there is the digital software it's great actually, fattens like a compressor but with very little comping.comping.
Excellent performance! ♥️ I’m not a huge fan of how this mic sounds though. It’s a bit too bright and sterile for me. It needs a pre with a lot of character to shine from my experience. Love the features and design however!
Huart, have you ever mixed a song in which the lead vocal was recorded in several takes (I know it is common) but some of those takes that were suppose to have the same vibe and tonality (since it is part of the same session) sound a bit different, for example darker or brighter or just a bit thinner or thicker and recording the vocals again wasn't an option? What do you do in that case?
@@Producelikeapro thank you very much. Like always, I learn a lot from your videos, especially the mindset behind every single step from recording to mastering.
Firstly, nice musical performance as that is the most important aspect. Second, it appears the mic modeling concepts seems to be very promising, because depending on the manufacturer you can have a "vibe/flavor" of the actual hardware, along with processing flexibility without taking a second mortgage or living out of your car due to the costs of the originals.
It is an SPL curve that was graphed to show what we perceive as equal loudness. The areas our ears are least sensitive need to be the loudest, and where we’re most sensitive needs to be quieter, in order to sound balanced
Do not forget tha Austrian Audio is a company made by AKG former staff. They move this way because Harman bought AGK … and then Samsung bought Harman !!!
I guess that would depend on your vocal dynamics and self-tonal structure 🤔. I feel like it would work numbers for the use I intend for it. To each trellis own though I suppose.
@@ThyLowZeen wasn't talking about vocals but yes, vocals too. If i want bright vocals i'd go with other mics. I didn't say it's a bad mic, it's just very thin sounding.
I honestly didn’t find it thin whatsoever. In fact it was richer than what I was expecting. I ended up buying a second to have a stereo pair as another option on piano, acoustic, overheads, woodwinds, etc. Best wishes
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell it's good on overheads and we have a taylor jumbo, sounds great on that too. But a c412/c414 eb sounds way fuller (that's what it's supposed to be anyway).
@Producelikeapro not really the townsend mic had its correctional eq done in the software whilst UAD sphere was done in the circuit.. meaning with townsend software and some eq matching done you could use other dual capsuled mics .
@@Producelikeapro I have been somewhat interested in the Townsend Labs and the UAD Hemisphere since it has native options, what are your thoughts on those?
@@Skibosski ok, I just asked them and got this response:- 'The Sphere DLX has a fixed -20 dB pad in place of the selectable -10 and -20 dB pads on the Sphere L22. Additionally, the Sphere DLX includes a 25' cable in place of the 10' cable included with the Sphere L22. Otherwise, the microphones are essentially the same.'
what if some notes would be +5/-5 cents away from a full note. Lots of Albums are done this way. If it sounds musical there is no right or wrong about it...
@HRTDEMON666my thought exactly, bending with a capo on is usually a recipe for tuning issues. Good playing and vibe though, and the tuning problem only stands out on a few chords.

I don't think i could do good work with just one (or one type of) mic. But if i gotta choose, it's a u67.
Like a 414 , a bit sweeter, with more options, isn't it ?
