Video game music peaked on the N64 in my opinion. It was the last console where video game music was confined on limited audio hardware before CD audio and i think video game music sounded better when it sounds closer to the original video games but with far superior hardware.
I liked SSB64's music a lot as it seemed like they were aware of the hardware limitations, so instead of trying to make something incredibly dramatic and cinematic, they instead chose to embrace the cartoony feel of the game by giving it fun, catchy tunes instead. I love the soundtrack of the other games too, but this one has such a specific feel to it that I love.
Agree. VGM has gotten very homogenous because modern hardware does not have bespoke audio. Everyone is also trying to go for realistic SFX or live music like overdone orchestra. So game audio is hardly ever unique like it was from gen 3-5. It's sad really.
@@daserfomalhaut9809to me the worst thing is when they take these kind of songs, that were made in a computer to be played by the console's audio thing, and try to play it live by an orchestra as an attempt to "remaster" it in a re release or something. It simply doesn't work, ends up sounding like a complete auditory mess, because the composition was made taking into consideration the immediate effect of an audio sample, humans can't do that with such precision. A lot of Yoko Shimomura's songs have that problem going on and I hate that it happens so consistently.
