    As a nurse. I come back to this when the suffering of others gets too much to bear. If you are lucky enough to be a support person for a nurse or other health care worker share this with them. Especially after this past year of working in health care.

      @jacquelinehobbs. So odd, I was literally just saying this (the pain of others’ suffering gets to be too much) to my husband. They say they are no coincidences. I am convinced.

    I'd just want to add that you should be careful, especially if you're a beginner. He alludes to it a little here, but it is more explicit in some of his books and from other writers on mindfulness. Having a practice of mindfulness over time increases the strength of mindfulness. Having support from others also helps it. In a lot of ways, having a regular practice is training for other times. When you're in the middle of powerful emotions, it is hard to remember to be mindful, and even if you do remember and try to be mindful, you might get stuck in your own head with negative thoughts or disassociating. We have patterns built up in our minds from over the years, and it isn't easily changed.
    But by building up the strength of your mindfulness, you're more likely to notice early signs of emotional storms as they're starting and be more likely to be able to intervene and cut things off before it gets worse. You're also able to handle stronger emotions in general. Until you get to that point, it still may be safer to distract yourself and come back to it later.
    As an aside, it's been interesting for me to see how the brain can feed negative emotions and keep them going. You feel anxious and are likely to think anxious thoughts and even fall into imagining bad scenarios in minute detail that haven't even happened yet and probably won't. But if you start to notice what is happening, you may still have thoughts but don't get as sucked into the thoughts. Or you notice you're imagining something. You go back to noticing your breathing and noticing the emotion itself. I can say "I'm feeling anxious". It's an uncomfortable feeling to sit with, but just by noticing it and calling it what it is, it has less power. Maybe an anxious thought comes up and it's like "hey.. there's an anxious thought.. that makes sense since I'm feeling anxious". Believing the anxious thoughts and getting lost in an anxious fantasy increases the anxiety, giving it strength. Without that, it tends to dissipate on its own a lot faster than it would have otherwise.
    That little bit of distance from the feeling and your thoughts also makes self-compassion easier. We're often compassionate to other people in a way that we aren't to ourselves. If a friend was having a panic attack, we'd give them a hug and try to help them through it. But if it is us, we may get frustrated and even angry at ourselves. With mindfulness, you get more used to noticing things without judging them. So when you go "I'm feeling anxious", it tends to be more a statement of fact then a judgement. So it is easier for that part of yourself that's observing to instead feel compassionate for yourself for going through this negative emotion.
    None of this stuff is easy and takes work. It's a process that you can improve at over time. There are some self-help people out there that kind of pervert these ideas to just blame the victim for their own pain. It may be true in a literal sense that our own minds and reactions to things cause us a lot of pain that isn't necessary, but that doesn't mean it is easy to change that, or that someone has the right tools to do it. We always need compassion for other people for where they are in their journey, and for ourselves in the same way.

      I remember I was freaking out on a plane with anxiety. There was no safe place or space to come back to. No reasoning no calm no mindfullness and I practise 2 hours a day. The only good thing was I didn't die. I probably will never fly again. It was sheer terror. Nothing to do with fear of crashing but was the fear of losing my mind in a metal tube at 30,000 feet surrounded by strangers. Youre right sometimes theres no space and one can only distract or do ones best to wade through it.

      Very educative. I love his videos. About suffering. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Perfect. For the last five days I have been meditating near the spot where Buddha's foster mother attained Parinirvana. What better place. Imagine it. All the greats sat around where I sat looking on and helping Prajapati Gautami attaining Parinirvana. The spot is lovely and serene on the banks of the Ganges. Wow. The Buddha watched on, Sariputra and Mogallana watched on, Kassapa, Bhaddaji and the other disciples watched on, Visakha and Amrapali watched on, Theri Uppalavana watched on and helped Prajapati Gautami to have her last bath. The five hundred nuns were sitting around meditating. It took time. I was on that spot imagining that scene through my monkey mind as I tried to meditate. Namo Buddhay. Namaste.

      This is what confuses me. How can you stay in the now and plan for your future at the same time? Do you live day by day and never think of what you want to do or not have any goals for the FUtUre? Should you not have any sort of plan for the future ? Just a thought and would like some responses to this. I have asked this question before and I was told being in the now and planning for the future are two completely different things. I think they r not! If you are planning your future and trying to create ut, you are not in the now. Also, I could be in a better place have I planned my life better. Just a thought.

    • @fortissimoX
      @fortissimoX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@estherbusuttil2996 Well, the thing is that when you are truly in the present moment, your whole mindset shifts in a way. I had a few glimpses of that state and I can confirm that it's totally different mindset than your everyday "thinking" mindset.
      So in fact, you are asking question from the regular everyday mindset, which is trapped in the mind concepts, and therefore has a time also as a concept, divided into past and future. But, unfortunately, from that mindset it's impossible to realize the answer to your question. You have to really experience it.
      And to really experience it, you have to commit to daily practice of bringing awareness to your life.
      Also, I would recommend you to check Eckhart Tolle, he has been answering that question of yours many times, and he gives much better explanation than I can 🙂

      It is an advanced level of mental state, with Thay, as Venerable, as Master, being able to have complete peace in the present moment even if it is unbearable. It is very difficult of course. If we all had that ability to be at peace having an unshakable mind we would all be Masters of our own emotional state of mind, also physical, and also spiritual state of mind...Buddhahood. It takes a lot of training and even the most trained peaceful mind will feel pain, still suffers. It is an incredible feeling when in an unexpected present moment you are still at peace while enduring such pain, such suffering. That seems like a superhero trait, but it can be obtainable naturally. For example, if you are present, on fire, in pain, and ready to die from being burned to death because you set your body on fire (for whatever reason such as a form of protest), and at peace at the same time in the current present moment, you have mastered mindfulness. You are no longer prisoner within the many illusions of your reality. That type of power of the mind can not be bought. No one can steal that from you no matter what they do to you, nothing can influence you when you are able to endure such a feat. The mind is very powerful. We take it for granted. It is important we stay still and awaken that mind, awaken that potential of being present even in an unbearable reality in which one may find themselves.

    Notes from the video(Part 1):
    When we go back to the present moment, we could encounter either of the 2 situations: happiness or pain.
    We don't like pain, try to run away and pretend it is not there by imagining the future or going back to the past to forget, or we try to cover it up by consumption. We hope by doing these things we don't have to encounter the suffering in us, thus allow the pain to continue to grow in us. So going back to the unbearable present moment is the only chance for us to understand the suffering, do something to calm it down and transform it. Here's how:
    a.generate energy of mindfulness by mindful breathing or mindful walking. /if there are group practioners, you can profit from their energy of mindfulness and compassion.
    b.the energy of mindfulness helps you to be strong enough to recognize(look the nature of suffering) and encounter the pain and embrace it tenderly.
    c. Embrace the pain tenderly/with tenderness, in a few minutes you can calm it down.
    d. get in touch with suffering, brings about understanding of suffering.
    e. And understanding and compassion has the power to heal. /heal you and your surrounding.
    f. when suffering less, we can help other people to do the same.

    Rest in peace, Thay. You have taught me SO MUCH. I feel so lucky to have been alive at the same time as you. Never met you but because I've felt your words in my heart I will miss you and do my best to carry a candle of your light with me wherever I go. Thank you for what you taught us while you were here and for risking your life for peace and love. May you have peace and comfort in abundance at last and may you be happy and whole again wherever you are. I am crying but it's not entirely from pain - it is sad that you aren't "here" physically anymore but I am so happy that you are free again. I'll never forget you.

Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt.

    Several years ago, I listened to Brene Brown's TED Talk on vulnerability and started therapy. I started to do my best not to run from the pain in myself. This is very similar to what he is saying in the video, and it indeed leads to healing and growth. I recently had transformative experiences and began to believe in God. I turned to spiritual teachings for answers and have found that I was on the right path all along without even knowing it. I find the parallels between modern psychology and Buddhism very interesting, but I will continue trusting my own intuition above all else.

    It is probably possible to stay in the present moment when we are feeling emotional pain, but when physical pain rips us apart, everything becomes unbearable...The past, the present & the future. I'm a healthcare worker. I see people struggling to breathe, struggling to stand or sit, even eat, devastated by pain, & it's unbearable to watch. We must be thankful for our good health. That, in itself, is a Divine blessing, & everything else will fall into place with time.

Jon Kabat Zinn has contributed significantly to the application of mindfulness for Pain Management. He is a doctor & has contributed enormously to the field. Vidymala Birch has also worked extensively in this area, herself suffering from chronic pain most of her adult life. Their courses in mindfulness for chronic pain has given people some respite. Staying in the present moment the last 18 months helped me live through the most emotionally and physically demanding and painful stages of my cancer journey. How did I do it ? What did I do ? The first thing I did was to accept it. Receive it completely what life had thrown at me without adding to it, subtracting from it , ignoring it, rejecting it or fighting it . Be with whatever fell on my lap. Not dwell in the past or future but remain steadfast and receptive for anything that came to me every single day. And simply lived for that day and immersed myself in Thay’s teachings.

One cannot deny such simple advice is a challenge to execute. I love this phrase, "The past and the future are like images, only the present moment is real." when think deeply, there is so much truth in thta phrase. Friend, . Reduce negative thoughts to relax and be in the present moment. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 10-15 minutes or more. Let thoughts come. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free during the day or night before sleep sit or lie down still for a few minutes and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Do the above practice daily to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

    Something that is really helping me with this is thinking of those anxious and scary thoughts as not my own. They are just thoughts, nothing to do with self. So that makes you observe the thoughts without judgement. You watch those thoughts arising, existing while constantly changing, and passing away. You observe as if you’re not the body, mind

    “Look for solutions, instead of being difficult; be more thoughtful, instead of allowing anger to burn you out. Look at things from a different perspective, embrace change, look out for opportunities and you will feel much more in control.”

    “This pain is unbearable” is a thought. At other times Thay has recommended that we drop down from the level of thinking to the level of feeling(sensation) and emotion, and embrace (ie soften your body) around the pain. Even if you can do this for a short while, you may find that the pain starts to ease. You can always return to your normal, non-transformative methods, and try a again later, bit by bit. Only when you are feeling confident enough that you can ease the pain, at least somewhat, should you return to the level of thought to see what the “roots” of the pain are, and whether there is a way of seeing things differently, using compassion and insights like interbeing, etc. That starts to transform the pain. Thay makes a good point that you don’t have to do this alone.

    Heard the news as well... I can only wish this gifted man blessings on the next journey 🙏 I only came upon this video the other day in a search for relief from my anxiety. I can truly say my mindset has been "different" in the past few days. I owe that to Thich Naht Hanh - in one moment he brought me much needed relief from a pain I've lived with for some time now.
    Thank you & Godspeed sir 🙏

    When I first started my journey in recovery I experienced so much at once, it seemed to never want to end. I needed solace, a way, no one I was seeking help from could teach me. One day at a thrift store I found his book "Miracle of Mindfulness," of a two books I used until the pages were falling apart. I bought a new copy and I continue to practice mindfulness in the storm. Such a huge blessing. I discovered me in that storm. Blessings and grace on your journey to healing.

    I'm so grateful for this man and teachings. Even when I don't practice and when I feel like I fail myself over and over, I know I have the light of these teachings in me from before when I was calmer and more diligent about practicing and that alone feels like a positive anchor.
    One thing I'm curious about and have noticed: I tend to refer to my physical surroundings a lot. If I feel anxious or calm, I find that I'm kind of half consciously monitoring where things are to gage my mood. Like a security thing, perhaps. I also feel aware of it in a another way: if there is clutter or mess or chaos it can pull me out of wanting to be in the present moment and distract and distress me. Yet, when im depressed or anxious or scared, I tend to put off daily household chores because my heart feels so heavy, so that then these same distractions turn back into the "safety-blanket" type feeling. Lime i just want to make sure everything is there and not disturbed but I also feel imposed upon by it and find my brain saying things like "see all this stuff you have to do?/you're so dirty and you are so depressed/how will you get it done when other things are more important?" Etc. It's fascinating and yet feels like a defense mechanism of some kind that might not be helping me, afterall. Any ideas in how to help this or what it is?

    • @JustDontMove111
      @JustDontMove111 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stop identifying with thoughts. "You have to get things done" You are so dirty" etc etc these are just thoughts. They are nothing to do with you. Just be the silent witness of them, do not judge, just watch.

    “Only the present moment is real.” Oh, to be able to hold that thought as a daily, if not hourly, mantra.
    “…will also find pain when you encounter your present moment…” How true.
    It’s most difficult and requires a lot of energy to transform that pain, but it can be done with thoughtful compassion for self and others.
    The most important elements to sustain focus during transformation would be courage, patience and diligence.

    I am doing my undergraduate thesis right now, I think I am suffering a lot. but then when I came home after 2 days focusing myself on the thesis. I fund that 3 people at home are Covid positive. I had this anger within me, blaming myself for not being home when people truly need me. I can't help this anger and dissapointing feeling. I cried because I have this mixed feeling about finishing my study and being there for people who needs me. But then after saw Thay dharma talk in that session, I realize, I know that doing my thesis is not really a pleasant feeling (I diagnosed major depression last year). But why dont you try to be Bhodisattva Ksitigharba? coming to the most suffering stituation in the present moment which is right now my family with covid at home. I have to fully give services to them so I could understand that this suffering is real so face it. Do not run away, Thay said. I wish I could bear this situation and keep mindfulness guide me. Thank you for the dharma, Thay.

So many burdens in my heart I feel for all the life forms on the earth right now, so much pain and suffering. I pray and meditate day and night, and pray that my prayers will go forward, not only for myself, but for so many others, I put love and light and hope, to strengthen all those who need it around the world right now. It's all I can do right now, I am believing in the strength that comes from pure love, and although I am not perfect, I understand that it is not required to give love and good thoughts, even if that is all I have to give. 👍❤😇🙏💕❤

    It’s a matter of being capable to stay focused on something positive. When you find yourself living in a moment of hardship, you must remind yourself that life gives you experiences which allows you to learn lessons and grow.
    If the only thing positive you can think of is that you are alive, than that’s what you focus on for the time being.❤️🕊
