Mario games aren't just for kids. They're for all ages. The best Mario RPGs have had writing and stories that could be enjoyed by both little kids AND adults. A story doesn't need to be overly complex for it to be engaging.

@@RuneTacticss Yeah I agree it's like you can't even talk about what you like about it without them injecting their problems with it into the conversation. "Gotta say I really loved the parts with Bowser-" "Ok but the dialogue is really bland and boring, and also I couldn't appreciate the cutscenes that much cause they were choppy." Like okay dude I get it, but you can enjoy a game despite its flaws.
I think this game is just a bit flawed. The IGN score felt like it was done for clicks and harsh, but it did offer some valid criticism which I feel is a bit of a shame since the game was hyped up to be a return to form. With that said, i have had fun with the game. It is very easy to pick up and play, perfect for the switch! And overall I just enjoy the rpg style of the game and the fight mechanics, which keep me thinking on how to beat each different enemy type.
Yeah it has its issues for sure. The pacing, battle music, and performance are all perfectly valid criticisms. The thing that a lot of people have a hard time understanding is that you can enjoy a game despite its flaws. Personally, Brothership is one of my favorite games (if not my favorite game) that I've played this year alongside Black Myth Wukong and Nine Sols. I'm a big M&L fan that can say this despite the flaws that I 100% agree with and the shifts made as a new entry in the series.
I thought the game was good. Was it jaw dropping and completely shattered my expectations for a video game? No, but very few games do nowadays. I can appreciate the length because as far as i know this is the last mario and luigi game we'll ever get. Im not sure where reviewers are coming from when they say "lengthy tutorials". I cant recall a time when a tutorial lasted longer than a minute and a half. Most of the time, youd get just text boxes explaining what was going on for the first time something occurs but after that its tucked away in snoutlet school should you ever need to reference soemthing.
Just passed the second great lighthouse. While I have a few complaints like the lack of attack pieces, seemingly no bros attack challenges, superboss gauntlets, and from what I’ve heard no hard mode, the game has proven to be a fun and… surprisingly challenging experience
Despite the critic ratings, I wasn't really too worried about them before getting into the game. Mainly worried about how much people would buy into purely the numbers and not the actual criticisms, which many are valid. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and my main issues were with pacing of the story towards the end (which I won't spoil), but the finale does pay off beautifully in a way I've not seen done as well in previous entries. The performance was overall fine, though I noticed Shipshape Island was most vulnerable due to progressing the story as more changes are added to the crowd/scenery. Hopefully it plays better on the Switch's successor, and hopefully still, more people give it a chance because the franchise is still really good. Before the last 10 or so hours, the game was my favorite in the entire franchise having played it for nearly 20 years now. This was brought down by the pacing, and my rating lands somewhere between 7.5 to a low 8, nowhere near 5. So while it's my second favorite game behind Bowser's Inside Story, Brothership truly is a charming, special game of its own that feels like a new beginning this franchise has sorely needed. Even with fears about sales right now, I have little doubt we'll get a new M&L game again someday, I'm just hoping it can be as close to this in visual and gameplay quality with the criticisms addressed. The combat gimmick was super fun and I loved it more than the Battle Card System in Paper Jam, which was that game's saving grace.
I share your thoughts 1:1. I think it's an 8/10. While it's different than the previous entries, that's absolutely not in a bad way. I think the game delivered a fantastic finale that was worth the diluted runtime.
Playing through Brothership myself, my only real issue with it is the early-game pacing. But outside of that...? I'd say it's an amazing game. I didn't even really notice the performance issues until very late into the game. The writing is indeed full of wit and charm, and the game does a lot with making me care about its cast
I think the rating of IGN should be 7 out of 10 which is one score below of Super Mario RPG remake. IGN didn't gave it a chance especially rushed that one without spoilers.

The game is probably longer than the last entries because the price literally doubled. DS games were around 35$, this one is around 60$, it should have more content for that price.
It's interesting that Ben "Yahtzee" Crosshaw from Fully Ramblomtic (the creator of StarShip Vagabond) gave this game a review score of "boring & unnecessarily long, can't recommend" but it didn't even make it onto his Top 5 Bland Games list for 2024. I do agree though that Thousand Year Door Remake is better. It was an amazing game on GameCube over a decade ago & it's still amazing. I'm so glad that more people are now able to buy & play it on modern hardware.
I'm gonna be honest I bought the game but then after watching some of the bad reviews, I returned it for a different game. I didn't end up liking the other game and traded it in at Game Srop. Here are my favorite Mario and Luigi games in order after making it to the end game in brothership: 1. Dream Team 2. Brothership 3. Superstar Saga Remake The worst one in the whole series. Paper Jam Didnt play the rest of them, plan on trying to get a copy of all of em eventually
I swear I will never get the AI. Luigi is bad apparently! Acting like this game is Luigi is like an MPC 00 if you want to talk about a MPC try talking about Bowser inside story!!! I mean Luigi Billy does anything you can’t even make him wheeled his hammer!!! same like the other Mario Luigi games!!! THE GUY IS LITERALLY JUST MARIO’S NPC BROTHER GOING ON A MISSION WITH HIM at least this game tries to make Luigi have somewhat of other things to do. Then Just follow Mario around like his sick puppy!! My point is that in superstar saga, through paper jam Luigi’s basically what they criticizing think about it like Luigi probably gets involved in some of the attacks or overworld abilities throughout the game when they’re not doing that what is Luigi do? LITERALLY NOTHING!!! Just follow Mario around stairs at his back and occasionally reacts to stuff happening just like brothership’s Luigi who basically does the same thing except he didn’t get sent to do some minor things like Luigi logic! Why are people so mad? You don’t have to send him to do anything. You know the same thing with Luigi jumping over a cliff by himself first of all if you’re complaining about this, I want you to ask you something how many times did you have to restart an entire section? You didn’t click the right time? Hmm? How many times did not cause get stuck and forced to jump down… yeah that’s what I thought anyway, that’s my criticisms
I’ve been 17 hours into the game and damn more than a month of TRYING to complete this game and man is boring... the gameplay in combats is fun, but the story and the world is lame as hell, nothing that actually makes you want to continue playing
The hand holding and fetch quests are horrible. The combat is unbalanced. The most expensive gear isn’t worth it. The puzzles are too easy. Only a couple fights are remotely challenging. And recovery items are way too accessible. You can pummel through everything with bros attacks and syrup jars without breaking a sweat. If you like RPG’s, you’ll play this once and never touch it again. I’ve already sold my copy.
I really wanted to like this game, but the game is unecessarily too long and always making you do minor (and boring) things to move foward. I fell like somewhere between 20 and 25 hours would be enough for this game. Recently dropped him with almost 50h in. For me, the game came to a point when it became unberable and i was loosing the interest. Its a shame, cause i love Mario games!
Well, no, not exactly. I do enjoy the game. It's a lot of fun and you know what makes this special to me is that this is my first ever Mario and Luigi. Game of all time and I haven't played any of the rest of them and I wished I did, but brothership is honestly the first time I playing. This type of game It's a lot of fun I. Enjoy it, and i'm really having fun playing through it
I'm only a bit into your review, but I find it really disingenuous to essentially say "it's okay for the writing to be bland and boring because it's for kids" The writing is probably THE appeal of the Mario RPGs. The best mario RPGs have really fun dialogue and the more bland the writing is the worse the Mario RPG gets enjoyed by the fanbase. Even games with absolutely trash gameplay like Super Paper Mario is enjoyed by fans because they enjoy the story. Meanwhile Paper Jam has a battle system around the same quality as the rest of the series but nobody likes it because it is just "generic toad dialogue" for the whole game. Every time someone tries to criticize Brothership, fans respond with "BUT THIS OTHER MARIO RPG ALSO HAS THIS FLAW!" (which is also a poor defense). But there is no denying brothership has some of the most boring dialogue in the series. I can't even finish this game. The dialogue feels exclusively for toddlers, instead of writing that appeals to every age like the best in the series.
My problem with the writing is that everyone who isn't a villain is way too nice... but in the boring way. They're all wet blankets. Even Snoutlet, the one they tried to make sassy, is only ever mildly sassy at most. The game definitely tries to have a bunch of character moments for their minor NPCs... but they more often than not just feel... I dunno... lame. Like, it tries to be sweet and wholesome, but just ends up feeling like an episode of the care bears. Which usually isn't a problem in classic Mario RPGs. I'm nearing the end of the game and none of the NPCs have managed to get me invested in them, despite trying very hard.
I personally think everybody is being too critical about this game. Its a mario game ITS MADE FOR CHILDREN TOO Yall gotta take a chill pill ngl This is too much and its kinda coming off as ungrateful to the devs who poured their hearts and souls into this game. In short Do better
Been playing the series since the GBA. The game is creative and has new mechanics which are good, however the main focus should be on the gameplay and of course the maps. I find Brothership not to be a good game. The maps designs are not only short, but not as creative, it feels like AI regenerated and the fact that they do not have a lot of new enemies to encounter and or challenge mode at least, I understand that we have some good side quests, however most of them are not interesting and boring. This game could have been better if the maps were better designed and expanded better with more new enemies.
I personally don't have an opinion on the writing but nobody seems to be saying that the writing is good, just defending it being mediocre. I'm gonna play devil's advocate by saying that "muh kid's game" isn't an excuse for mediocre writing; Bowser's Inside Story targeted kids, but everyone loves the writing in that game.
Its clunky tbh. I miss the snappy movement of old DS games. I don't need all these cutscenes, especially when the story is boring as heck. I don't care about the electric socket people
It's not bad but it is badly optimized! the frame rate is absolutely garbage very inconsistent and can't hold 30fps properly. Loading times are way too Long and many more issues
Finished it a few days ago and yes the game is very flawed unfortunately. From the music to the pacing and performance. IGN is IGN I don’t care but I like that they gave it a perfect mediocre score of 5 instead of the typical 7 (a score of 7 means basically nothing at this point). The game has problems enough for a 5 and it’s annoying to see how people argue against it just because they don’t wanna see it.
I really wanted to grab it but seeing the poor performance turned me off. Same with the new zelda game. Ill wait and see if they offer improved performance on the switch 2.
I feel like they lost a lot of the plot with what made Mario and Luigi feel like Mario and Luigi. Luigi just feels like an NPC for the sake of streamlining things that made the series unique, not to mention the muscle memory frying decision to make Luigi select battle options with A (a small point but imagine suddenly having to accelerate in Mario kart with the Y button 😵💫) that’s my biggest gripe. Also do kids not deserve good well written humor? Do kids not deserve effort in writing? That argument treats kids like joke dumpsters where we can throw shitty jokes in when they deserve better. I don’t mean for that to be an attack, but I’d be a remiss not to mention it. Great video ❤
Wow the game sounds like total trash to me. Glad I checked this video before I wasted even more money. I got a 3 year old who loves to Game, AstroBot is his favorite, game, it's really odd that a game like that can be for everyone, and a Mario game can't even keep a 40 year olds attention.
Get Mario party jamboree. Mario is fun for over 40+ years people in party games at least.. Also Paper mario got better hope than Mario and luigi at this point lol. They are making metroid prime 4 too which might be better than Astro bot
You know that asking this question already is a clear sign that the game is not good. Stop lying to yourself and agree that Nintendo is scare to make any interesting stories there days

The worst one in the whole series. Paper Jam
Didnt play the rest of them, plan on trying to get a copy of all of em eventually
I hate that facts my comment is highlighted....
Better than wonders story 😭
I’ve been 17 hours into the game and damn more than a month of TRYING to complete this game and man is boring... the gameplay in combats is fun, but the story and the world is lame as hell, nothing that actually makes you want to continue playing
It’s a good game I liked it. Perfect length for a rpg.
Enjoy it, and i'm really having fun playing through it
Remember. IGN gave Dragon Age: The Veilguard a 9.0
I'm only a bit into your review, but I find it really disingenuous to essentially say "it's okay for the writing to be bland and boring because it's for kids"
The writing is probably THE appeal of the Mario RPGs.
My answer, absolutely not!! I think it’s a master piece and its rating needs to go up!
I liked this review. I personally feel like the game gets better over time
I think it should be a 90/100. This game is overhated.
Too much water
that even if the game got a slow start
No stop making bad thumbnails And be more positive
i find the mini battles a bit repetitive
IGN gave it a low score because Mario was not reimagined as a Troon.
Play The Smurfs Dreams please 🙏
I love the smurfs dreams!
I personally think everybody is being too critical about this game. Its a mario game
ITS MADE FOR CHILDREN TOO
Yall gotta take a chill pill ngl
This is too much and its kinda coming off as ungrateful to the devs who poured their hearts and souls into this game.
In short
Do better
And the rating of the game said E for Everyone.
I’m actually really enjoying the game 😊
"battle" plug?!? Lol
short answer is yes, butthurt fans couldnt just accept the fact
IGN lost credibility with this one
IGN IS BAD PLEASE STRIKE ZIFF DAVIS
Been playing the series since the GBA. The game is creative and has new mechanics which are good, however the main focus should be on the gameplay and of course the maps. I find Brothership not to be a good game. The maps designs are not only short, but not as creative, it feels like AI regenerated and the fact that they do not have a lot of new enemies to encounter and or challenge mode at least, I understand that we have some good side quests, however most of them are not interesting and boring. This game could have been better if the maps were better designed and expanded better with more new enemies.
I would still buy it but still
I love Snoutlet!
"The humor is serviceable and well done for the series."
Have you played another Mario & Luigi game or a Paper Mario game?
The gameplay looks bad in my opinion
Does it run better than sonic frontiers on switch is the question
It does lol
I personally don't have an opinion on the writing but nobody seems to be saying that the writing is good, just defending it being mediocre.
I'm gonna play devil's advocate by saying that "muh kid's game" isn't an excuse for mediocre writing; Bowser's Inside Story targeted kids, but everyone loves the writing in that game.
You didn’t even play Brothership so why are you even trying to crap talk a game you didn’t even play?
Not my favorite in the series, that goes to Dream Team! Then Paper Jam, then Brothership. All games in this series is a 7+/10 imo
Meh, this game could never live up to the previous ones just because this one looks more 3D.
😂😂😂
Its clunky tbh. I miss the snappy movement of old DS games. I don't need all these cutscenes, especially when the story is boring as heck. I don't care about the electric socket people
It's not bad but it is badly optimized! the frame rate is absolutely garbage very inconsistent and can't hold 30fps properly. Loading times are way too Long and many more issues
Test it with a framerate tester! Post your results on TH-cam!
Pixar movies are for kids, but have depth for adults. The storyline critique is fair.
Mario games are some of the least focused games ever. With three strongest being super paper Mario.
And even, it’s not like brothership’s story is bad
Your take on the game is somehow worse then the ign take
Noooooooooo definitely not 🤫
Finished it a few days ago and yes the game is very flawed unfortunately.
This game took me 43 HOURS TO COMPLETE. The pacing sucks.
I really wanted to grab it but seeing the poor performance turned me off. Same with the new zelda game. Ill wait and see if they offer improved performance on the switch 2.
The game runs fine!
What exactly is wrong with the writing in the game? Because I bet you’ll never even be able to explain how the writing is bad even if you try to. lmao
Stop lying to yourself and agree that Nintendo is scare to make any interesting stories there days
zelda echoes and metroid p 4 say hi
Definitely hate the art style
