The game plays it for laughs but I personally find this stage to be very grim, what with the opening message and the fact that there's no actual way to leave this detour. Once you reach it, it's over, for the player AND for Fox, who, realistically, will be stuck there forever until time whittles him down, while Corneria is destroyed.
This game is from 1993, I was born in 1994, I played Starfox so many times in my entire childhood almost everyday, and I discovered this level thanks to the internet when I turned 18. My mind blew that day.
I've seen a few people say this idea and I think it makes sense. When fox broke the asteroid, a fragment few into his ship and cracked the glass. Following this, due to the lack of oxigen, fox begins to hallucinate this.
It is confirmed in the story that Out Of This Dimension is real, and not caused by hallucination. Someone already experienced the bird, followed by a warp effect (reminiscent of how wobbly the level is) and were never heard from again.
I think what’s scary is the theories about this level. Scariest one in my open that Fox died and his body is just in deep space, this whole mission is some dying hallucination dream.

If we ever get a new star fox (extremely unlikely but i can dream) i would like to see out of this dimension return in some way its a unique and kinda creepy stage in star fox
Honestly, i always wondered if this level was originally a shortcut to Macbeth (it would fit with the map placement) similar to the black hole, but they just decide to cut the shortcut and instead make it an easter egg
My theory of what the hell this is is that there was no bird, after destroying the astroid a fragment hit the glass cracking it, leaving oxygen to deplete, this is fox's hallucinations as he is suffocating, fox is already dead and doesn't know it.
Glad to see more people getting to experience this stage! The hidden stages in SF1 are so neat, and as a kid I was let down a lot by the warp zones in SF64 by comparison haha
You know, i feel like they could re-explore the concept for a "Out of this dimension" bonus level in the future, if they ever make another starfox game that is. Like maybe Fox and co get lost there and have to find a way back like it's interstellar or something.
this place is just inescapable, so unless you want nintendo to make a secret alternate ending in which star fox gets lost in an inhospitable dimension, the place won't be revisited
Yes. you are correct. The guy who designed the moon in MM also designed the planet's with faces and the "Laughing asteroid" From space armada(i think that's the level) Where you shoot it to go to the black hole level.
So I guess this could be interpreted as a secret third ending. I wanna know what the devs were smoking, because you'd have to be as high as Stephen King was when he wrote IT to come up with this kind of stuff.

I mean, it kinda doesn’t too because if that happened the others would have noticed
Also even if you break the asteroid, you can still miss the bird
