These are what timeless tales are like. Thank you to the animators and voice actors who have brought this tale to life and, most of all, thank you Oscar Wilde.
Haven't seen this for decades. It would always leave me crying for the swallow who gave his life. Some said this should be happier for kids, but these are the stories that taught compassion. To deny your kids from feelings of selfless caring and understanding is a loss for all of us. ✌🏻 Thank you for being able to see this again. And I didn't cry this time though my heart is heavy.
Selfless caring and understanding, somthing todays youth are clearly lacking with all this instant gratification and self centeredness from watching too many reality shows..
@@stephanieprpa630 Because the character is played by a woman. Glynnis Johns, the daughter of Mervyn Johns, who played Bob Cratchit in the Alistair Sim Christmas Carol. She also played the mother in Mary Poppins.
Awwww So happy to watch this again. I first saw this when I was a child and made such an impression to me... I cried then watching this, I still cried decades after... such a beautiful story... and well told. I love this version best, Thank you for making it available.
This is the most wonderful versioning of this tale I have every heard. Christopher Plummer & Glynis Johns. Ron Goodwin composed the music. Animation graphics are absolutely superb as well.
We used to watch this every Christmas in elementary school, thank you for posting it. I look for those old cartoons they used to show us every Christmas!
You know, I may well have seen this in grade school too. I know it was a fair while back, but I still remember it! This, and *The Selfish Giant* The music scores and animation fit like they were made for each other! "Come Away!"
And I am one of those people who cried over this. [Did anyone else cry? I'm crying over this, because why?] Sacrifices always gets me. [I would declare and ask how is this sad yarn a children's tale, but, no matter!]
My favorite part of the story is the unrequited love between the swallow and the reed, too close to life, falling for something or someone that appears beautiful but that can offer nothing. "Say you love me" & "come away with me" to an illusion drifting silently in the wind. Whoa, heavy
I also love the irony that the bird ended up falling in love with the statue that was also beautiful, but only because the statue was willing to give that beauty away to help others. It's such a twist on the cliche that those who appear ugly to begin with have the better hearts.
I loved this story very much 😘 it is superb 👌👌👌👌 I felt like crying This is the best story I ever watched Around of a clause to the happy prince and the swallow👏👏👏👏👏👏
Such a beautiful story. Oscar Wilde’s fairytales are all wonderful. The Nightingale and the Rose, The Selfish Giant and the Birthday of Infanta are my personal favourites along with The Happy Primce and all are beautifully written.
Me and my two year old are watching this. He’s mesmerized and telling me all about the prince and the bird; I’m just choking back some major tears right now. 😭😭😭
I watched this with my 3 years old girl , she slept in the middle of the story and here I am crying alone 😂 , this is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever heard
Oscar Wilde was such a good writer. The Happy Prince will always be my most favourite story so far. Never read such a beautiful story in my life. I will make sure to tell this story to my children in the near future.
This is beautiful. All I know about Oscar Wilde, other than him obviously having a good heart and being a talented poet and storyteller, is that he was persecuted and prosecuted quite heavily for being gay and having a relationship with a young man. I can't help but admire the circumstances in this tale in which a young male swallow with great ambitions and dreams was waylaid by an older, disabled prince (as statues can't move.) Perhaps Oscar struggled with the idea that other people viewed (or would view) him as abominable or disabled for being gay even though he had such beauty in his heart and created stuff like this. The statue was quite pushy but was selfless in his desire to have the swallow help him bring joy and love to others. The swallow felt bad and guilty for being the intermediary, further disabling the statue in its desire to help the less fortunate. I suppose the love between a male swallow and a prince statue could easily be considered homosexual, but it is so abstract as to not be obviously so. Still, the sweetness yet masculinity of the prince and the femininity and vanity that could be put aside of the bird brought out a beauty and attractiveness to their tryst that defied gender stereotypes. The bird never admitted to loving the statue, but the bird was free to leave at any time and stood by the prince because he needed someone after all he had given. The prince did admit his love to the bird and the bird wanted to give him the kiss but died before he could complete it. I definitely felt tears roll down my cheek as God gave them a second chance in heaven. I'm pretty much an atheist but with a story like that I almost felt like I could understand why people believe. Because that kind of selfless love for one another and the people they share the world with no matter their gender or appearance should have the ability to continue. God, it's the least preachy LGBT message I've ever seen. The unusual love only came about from truly selfless desires and acts. I feel so bad for Oscar Wilde. ;-;
...and all these years later, we still have racism, bigotry... Your thoughtful and lovely words here touched my heart. If we could all only show just a little more kindness, a little more love.

MyJames67 because life isn't joyful, it is hard but if you live a good life and help those less fortunate you will be rewarded in the after life.
Because children are capable of grasping moral stories w/out having to be dumbed-down!
How old is this movie?
At least 50. Probably a bit older.
What if the swallow is just hallucinating and Oscar Wilde intended the Happy Prince to be a metaphor for the swallow's inner goodness?
