I am fortunate to live a short 20 min car ride from the Ghost so I go at least once every couple of months, it's my personal HEAVEN on Earth. I lived in the arcades in the 80's and 90's. Shoutout to the legends, Aladdin's Castle Arcade at the HIP, Dennis' Place for Games off Cumberland, I think that's Norridge but not sure and every 7-Eleven that had arcade games where I spent money on Slurpees, chips, candy and a ton of Street Figher Champion Edition and Mortal Kombat...I am but one of MANY who lived this way as a kid, salute to us.
Well said! If you live within close proximity, you can be considered spoiled because there is no other place like it. If you have easy access to the Ghost, it makes all other arcades look like that 7-11 that had one or two cabinets in the corner.
I believe this to be the best retro arcade in the world.. I would put all wrestling/boxing/karate games in one section. All seated driving /flying games in one section though
Jesus it’s so cramped in there. Some areas look like you couldn’t even play a game if someone was playing the one across from it. I can’t imagine this place on Friday night.
You are correct. The aisles are tight... but they have to be. There is no other way to cram near 1,000 cabinets in one building without putting them side-by-side. Yes, Fri and Sat nights are the busiest but it isn't as bad as you might think. Still, highly recommend visiting. A really cool place. That back corner where the Silent Hill and Castlevania whip cabinets are have poor ventilation so it is super hot back in that area (especially in the summer time). I also recommend leaving your jacket in the car in the winter time as it is warm in there.
@@ZackGaz Oh right on. Still looks super fun! Do they allow you to come and go after door charge? Like could I come back later in the day or would I have to pay again?
@@skte2die Yes, as long as you keep your daily receipt, you can leave and come back. I recommend eating a big lunch, then going to the arcade, hang out for 4 hours (4 hours is like the blink of an eye when you are there), then you can walk out, drive to any restaurant nearby, grab some food, and come back before they close (which is late, like 1 or 2am or whatever). They also sell Weekly/Monthly/Lifetime passes if you wanted to spend a ton of time there. And there is no food or drinks allowed inside... gotta keep those machines clean. Or even bring a snack and eat in your car.
@@skte2die No, there are no lockers. But if you had a skateboard, I would just ask the person behind the counter if you can leave it with them for a few hours. I don't see that being a problem...
Funny! I had that same exact thought. The monthly electric bill has to be pretty high. You can't see too much of it in this video but if you peak behind/between the rows of cabinets, there is a rat's nest of wires. Takes time to organize all that.
@@tttarms1970 Heck yeah! Let me know when you go and maybe we can meet up and play some co-op brawlers, Joust, or Smash TV. I try to go at least 1-2 per year. If you have not been there, let me give you some advice. Eat a big meal just before you go because four 4 hours will disappear in the blink of an eye. You can leave and re-enter (just keep your receipt) so either pack a meal and eat in your car or grab fast food down the street, sit down for a few minutes to rest, then go back. At one point, you'll get tired just from standing at the cabinets all day. Wear the most comfortable shoes you own and don't wear a heavy jacket even during the winter as it gets pretty hot in there, especially in the back shooter-section corner (where the Castlevania and Silent Hill lightgun games are). If you bring a wife/gf, have them leave the purses at home because you don't want to hold that stuff and will want free hands. And make a day out of it. There is no point in just going for an hour. You can easily spend an entire day there, literally.
Nice tour.... If you take 2 hour breaks per day and only played 5 minutes per game, then it will take you a whole week to complete as of August 19 2023 there are 944 video arcades.
If you ever have the chance to go, highly recommended. Even though your PC game emulate many of these games, it just isn't the same. The sights and sounds. Being in an actual arcade is just different. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Absolutely! 100%. 4 hours goes by like 4 minutes here. My advice, grab lunch just before you arrive. Then hang out all day. Drive home. No food/drink allowed inside. But if you wanted to leave and come back, you can as long as you have your daily receipt. Let me know what you think when you get back.
One of my only criticisms is that there is not enough room in a lot of the aisles. There is no way two be people back to back would have enough room to play comfortably. Hell, there is barely enough room to pass someone by who’s playing. I think I’d rather download MAME and play all those from the comfort of my couch.
@@Dog-999i Why settle for hundreds, when you can have THOUSANDS from the comfort of your couch? Why travel to a high crime city like Chicago, when you can have everything in the comfort of your home? Heck, they have a Mame Android port for your phone now!!
Yeah but it’s almost like saying “why go to a concert when I can just stream the artist’s whole catalog at home”. There’s something special about being there IMO YMMV
There are two places like Galloping Ghost that are local to me and cost $15 to get in (compared to GG at $25). that being said, what's annoying is that half of the good games are at one location, and half of the other good games are at the other place this one pretty much has them all. EASILY worth it at $25 also holy crap they have The Grid?? That is virtually impossible to find these days. Wow!
The Ghost now has closer to 900 games available at the time of this post. And not only do they have The Grid, they have multiple cabinets linked for multiplayer!
@@ZackGaz Damn! that's awesome. Fortunately my parents live near Brookfield and I'll probably make a trip to visit them soon. Looking forward to checking this place out
Other than the small, bite-size candy pieces for sale at the front register, no food or drinks are allowed inside the arcade. Can't blame them. No one wants sticky/gross controls and liquids can damage the units. However, there are many restaurants nearby and you can leave and come back that same day as long as your have your paid receipt.
