    CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: The seedy underbelly of show business is the business at hand in Alexander McKendrick's SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (1957) starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. Based on an original story by Ernest Lehman and a screenplay co-written with Clifford Odets, the film deals with the daily life of J.J. Hunsecker, a sleazy columnist who wields a lot of power and is based on Walter Winchell. As played by Lancaster, Hunsecker is a glowering monster, a menace in black spectacles. Curtis plays press agent Sydney Falco whose life and livelihood depend on his clients getting mentioned regularly in Hunsecker's column. Falco is desperate to be better than he is and will do whatever, to whomever he needs to get where he needs to go. It's a land of perpetual night and constant double crosses. Shot on location in and around Manhattan in the fifties. SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS offers unforgettable characters caught in ever tightening webs of their own design that take them farther and farther away from the one thing they so desperately need and will do anything to get, having their dreams fulfilled.

    I can't believe that this movie bombed in it's day, it is one of the best movie on the seedy under belly of the business of celebrity there is and the cinematography of James Wong Howe is to die for.

    When poor Barbara Nichols thinks she has a date with Sidney and he pushes her to service a customer.... that is Sidney's lowest point in the movie. I think Barbara Nichols was vastly under-rated - I would have loved to see her play the Marilyn role in Arthur Miller's After the Fall. Below Mamie Van Doren? Not fair, Steve!

    Its a shame. Barbara Nichols who sadly died at only 47 years old did some amazing work. Apart from her film work she did great work in TV.
    Two of my fav Jack Benny episodes featured her, along with Jimmy Stewart. Another gone too early. I dunno .......

I must rectify that i-MEEE-jit-ly! ;) I've always wondered this about your channel: this film got over 13k views, but only 222 (that includes me) clicked thumbs up...only three down. Why so many views and hardly any people saying they liked it? Your channel has been around for about 12 years, so why is it all but forgotten? I love you and your channel to death---what can we do to get more folks watching? You're too good not to be seen by more individuals. Kudos, sir, kudos!

    Dear Steve, this is such a brilliant film, but it is really hard to watch. How someone powerful can destroy others so remorselessly, and the corruption and destruction filter down through everything and everyone so that the ones with the least power suffer the most - oh, Barbara Nichols is heart breaking, and I agree that both she and Tony Curtis deserved Oscar nominations. I think at the time it was released, the reason it bombed may have been that the public had been protected from reality for so long - pre Code films weren't only sexier, they were often more honest about cruelty (think of "Of Human Bondage", which in the 1930s version was completely true to Somerset Maugham's book and would never have been so raw if it had been made in the 1950s). I do agree about something diverse in Burt Lancaster's character; I thought he was extraordinarily sensitive in an odd film named "Castle Keep", and I adored him in the British film "Local Hero", but during his long career he also played (excellently) very cruel men. Incidentally, you gave us a superb review of "The Stranger", a film which I admire very much, and to which I responded. But I happened to see an old interview with Orson Welles on television recently, when he talked about making the "The Stranger", and was astonished. He'd been prepared for Loretta Young, but totally unprepared for Edward G. Robinson, who spent the first week of shooting shouting at him furiously that he was being shot on his wrong side. As Orson said, "He had a wrong side???" It became so impossible that Orson went to Loretta, who said, "OK, shoot my wrong side!" Robinson also created a storm about the scenes when he's drinking coffee and playing checkers in a drugstore, which I think add warmth to the film, as Orson Welles wanted, but Robinson thought were unnecessary and that the character actor opposite him was being favoured. They really built a 90 ft tower for the final scenes, and Loretta really is being dangled by the arm over the 90 ft drop, but Edward G. Robinson was content with the toes of a stunt man being shown. You know everything, Steve, but I live and learn! Best wishes, Alida

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, Eddie. Too bad they didn't cast Agnes Moorhead in the role as Orson wanted. But, despite all of his shenanigans, Robinson was amazing and I think a bit bitter at not getting the credit he felt he deserved. As for " Sweet Smell", I think your theory is absolutely on the money. The public never wanted to admit that show biz was so unremittingly ugly. because to the average person, the stars had fulfilled their dreams, they lived in the heavens of Hollywood, despite this being made during the McCarthy witch hunts and the blackmail days of "Confidential Magazine" . Show biz. Down & dirty, ugly show biz.

    How in the world could this movie have bombed? Does anyone know why? Was it too soon - years ahead of itself? Did people really like Mr. Winchell? I can't figure it out -- I consider it a bona fide CLASSIC! One of my favorites. Tony Curtis was so delicious, wasn't he?

    Thank you! Now I know what THAT was about. I was digging for the information about a certain publicist, and the movie was mentioned in a description of her. Now, I know what the Times meant. But I'm having a really hard time believing that ANYONE....EVER thought Tony Curtis was a 'prettyboy'. I mean, he's about as hideous and repulsive as they come, by today's standards. Tastes, apparently, have really changed. And who would ever have believed Burt Lancaster as a dried-up old columnist? Maybe TODAY, when everybody lifts weights - but back then, he must have been the most physically magnificent man in Hollywood. As 'The Swimmer', he was perfect. But as a columnist who hung around in bars, drinking and smoking? ....not even slightly believable.

      Laqncaster played an alcoholic middle-aged man in Come Back Little Sheba and he nailed it with a few carefully selected movements, mannerisms, though many disagree with me on this. Tony Curtis does nothing for me either but I think his looks are more attractive on Jamie Lee than they are on him.

    If you make a great film that exposes the swamp creatures of the press, don't be surprised when the press smears you.
    This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I first learned about it via Barry Levinson's first flick, Diner. A side character in that movie had the film memorized and his only lines in the film were him reciting the film, muttering to himself, oblivious to the world around him.
