I've always loved Midnight. It's perfect in almost every way. It also reminds me of another classic 30s comedy, Desire, with Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper.
Is it me, or is this kind of sophistication impossible to find today? Careless elegance without arrogance, intelligent wit without malice, sexiness without vulgarity, charm without meretriciousness - they're all here. But where are these qualities to be found in today's films? Indeed, in today's world?
I think the key is wit. No one writes thos etypes of conedies with sophisticated, witty dialogue anymore. It's all spectacle and CGI...at least in this counry.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ As you know, entertainment is a business. If the majority of the filmgoing public had an appreciation for wit, Hollywood would be all to happy to pay the best and the brightest to craft something worth the ticket price. Another issue is that, if a young firebrand managed to produce a sophisticated gem, former patrons (like me) who mourn the loss of glamor and repartee are less likely to seek it out.
Well, if they don't, they should! I lve it! Glad you do too! I hope you sbscribe and please push the like button. Stay happy, stay well and above all, stay SAFE! Best; Steve
One of the most under-rated thirties comedies. Rex O'Malley in this film is Mary Astor's 'gay best friend' and virtually invents the role more than a half century before Rupert Everett.
...and another film drops into my ever-expanding Netflix queue... Why Steve doesn't have his own TV show on TCM (or BRAVO for that matter) is beyond me. Another terrific review!
Colbert, Ameche, Barrymore, and Astor are so ....operative word: Delightful! I must say a special Thank you to you, Mr. Steve Hayes, for replying to so many of my comments. You've made me feel as if I've had replies by a genuine movie star! I consider you a genuine movie star, anyway.
Oh, and one of the funniest lines in any movie ever made is when Claudette runs into Mary Astor in a hat shop and remarks to Mary, "I like that hat--it gives you a chin." 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
No one. And I do mean No One, reviews the golden classic movies of Hollywood better than you! I have seen this movie and thanks to you and all the background info, will watch it again! BTW I just adore Don Ameche! And the fabulous clothes! Elegant old time Hollywood! Thanks for the review and you and that head of steely gray hair are fantastic!

@jgg59 I love THE MATING SEASON too. I think that Thelma Ritter should have had the Oscar for this. It also shows what a wonderful light comedienne Gene Tierney could be with the right director and material. But, it's not on DVD and available on Netflix. I don't review films that people can't rent or get hold of easily. It's just too frustrating and as a result, it's tough for alot of films I really love. Thanks for watching! Best; TOQ
Incredible movie. I am recovering post-op and decided to enjoy it again. Watched it twice in one day, as is my way to autopsy, dissect and analyze wonderful movies. Steve is absolutely right. - DO keep an eye on Mr. Rex O'Malley. - I ask you, why is this fine actor not a celebrated star in the classic actor pantheon? - Really, this is one of those films you can dither about forever, so I won't. But I must add, Don Ameche, oh. Oh, oh, oh. As they say, "Now, that was a man." Bless him.
Dear Gail; Thank you for your comments and I hope you are on your way to a speedy recovery!!! I am a firm believer that laughter helps healing better than anything, so here are some more recommendations that if you've seen them, might be worth going back to: 'The Awful Truth", "The Palm Beach Story", Bluebeard's Eighth Wife", "Theodora Goes Wild", "The Princess Come Across", "My Man Godfrey", "The Women" & "Auntie Mame" All screwey, funny and witty. Rex O'Malley is brilliant as Garbo's confidante in "Camille". Fell better!
There's a funny take on Claudette's career in the trailer for ''Midnight'': IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT...AT ''MIDNIGHT.'' I'm with you, Steve. "'Midnight'' is adorable.
BTW Steve- you DO know that John Barrymore and Mary Astor were lovers offscreen in the 1920s? Also, look out for John's last wife Elaine Barrie (nee Jacobs) in a supporting role!
ive never heard of this movie and its in that benchmark year 1939. the plots sounds kinda like IDIOTS DELIGHT w Norma Shearer and Clark Gable... and Gable sings and dances
I love this one because it has such a marvelous, witty script by Billiy Wilder and Charles Brackett and the suporting cast is sensational and all seasoned comic pros. Sophisticated, witty and wonderful. Thanks so much for watching! Stay SAFE & All My Best; Steve

One of my absolute favorites. So many hilarious lines.
Mine too. I love this one!
"His wedding present was a roller skate covered with Thousand Island Dressing." Try to find a line like that in today's so-called 'comedies'.
A very funny film. Claudette Colbert and John Barrymore are hilarious together.
The script is so smart and sassy. Typical Billy Wilder/ Charles Brackett script and Mitchell Leisen is a vastly underrated director.
