  • It was Sega's weapons based fighting game. Beautiful and extremely difficult, lets take a look at this often forgotten classic.

    Episode Notes:
    1. Arcade version running on Nebula Model 2. Saturn and PS2 versions on real hardware.
    2. You can get the PC version working on a modern machine, but it isn't arcade perfect.
    3. Sega AM3 has had different members and names over the years, but has been just as prolific as AM2 to the success of the company. They created or were involved in the process of countless great Sega franchises.
    4. I really would have loved to have seen Last Bronx mature into a series like AM2's efforts. I would also really like to see a Fighters Megamix 2 featuring its characters included.
    5. Last Bronx is very affordable on Saturn. Complete Japanese versions are almost given away.
    6. I was mistaken about the Last Bronx anime. It was actually a multi part radio drama that played in Japan. There was also a novel based on its story.

The only time I saw, and played this title was when I was in Okinawa back in 96 when I was in the Marines. Dropped plenty of quarters in this game. I remember a few titles that I loved during my 6 months there. A Konami Basketball game, Daytona USA, Soul Edge, Tekken 2, Xmen vs Street Fighter, House of the Dead, and Wargods. Last Bronx, Tekken 2, Soul Edge, and Xmen vs Street Fighter were my jams. i remember practically owning the play times on those machines.

I have some fond memories of the PC Version, too. Was one of the only fighting games on the PC back than IIRC and had a very nice networking implementation that was well suited for our frequent LAN parties back then. Everyone in the session could watch the fight between the two active players over the net, wile you could do "winner stays in game, looser makes room for the next player" and so on game modes. Great fun. Everyone had their character, for example I loved Yoko good friend always played "the pimp with the stick" and we - as Germans with zero language skills ins Japanese always (mis)understood the words the chars shouted on a win. IIRC it only lacked a 3d acceleration, we all had voodoo 2, later even SLI or voodoo graphics back then and it was software rendering only.

It was just mediocre at best. Virtua Fighter was the game to master, I especially loved VF3 with the added tilted level design, it was the top of the series. It became bland with 4 and 5, wanted more of 3. AM3 is the king of racers though.

    Great Channel SLX !
This and Anarchy in the Nippon where the two very rare and impressive looking Japanese 3D fighters on the Saturn.
Sadly they were missing as you mentioned elements/ lures like story line explanation cinemas, deeper learning curve, additional characters and secrets that could be unlocked; like in Mortal Kombat & tekken.
Namco seemed to get this right, of course I’m sure after studying Sega efforts, since Sega generally was first to innovate in several genres.
On the topic of hidden characters going back to the local arcade here in New York and seeing new characters available in Mortal Kombat and Tekken was so interesting and rewarding.
Besides having impressive intros that were used as captivating shopper bait in the local game stores and malls, beating the Tekken 2 game with each character gave the reward of an intriguing ending cinema. This coupled with a deep character move development added to its allure. I wish Sega would have adopted some of their practices. I love VF2 but have never bother to play through with each character save for Akira, Kage, & Wolf, as there is really no bonus but seeing Dural at the end.
Fighting Vipers had some of the most interesting looking characters, following the archetypical character roster of course. I just wished they would used the armor breaks feature a little more making it easier to break off an opponents amor or perhaps giving characters moves they could not execute without the amor; incentivizing people to throw off their characters amour to do moves those.
Wish their was an easy 3D mugen like engine we could use to improve or added elements to these sega games.
What do you say fellow Sega heads ?
Thanks SLX keep the conversation going!

This video was fascinating! Awesome work Sega Lord X! I only played this game maybe twice at the arcade, yet somehow nearly 30 years later I still remember it so well. The first time I saw Last Bronx, the arcade cabinet was surrounded by onlookers because there were these two older guys having a blast playing against each other. They must’ve mastered each character because they made this gameplay look so good! The moves they executed really showed a style and depth that other fighting games at the time just didn’t have. And then of course after they leave I go on to play it and I suck so bad haha. It was just too difficult for me. I probably ended up blowing off the rest of my quarters on House of The Dead

Now i realize that soul calibur characters on dremcast where "inspired" on this last bronx..some moves and "tools" are the same .... the character with the hammer ...etc.

      @M.Bipson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Unlikely considering Soul Calibur is a sequel to Soul Edge which released in 1995. Around 6 months or so before Last Bronx released. The "hammer" character you're probably thinking of is Astaroth who actually uses an axe and is based off of Rock from Soul Edge. Nearly all of the weapon styles and movesets present in Soul Calibur already existed in Soul Edge.

@@M.Bipson i guess you are right ...yes...i love soul calibur if you have those games you can compare ..the moves and the weapons you have sophitia and kilik on last bronx etc ...looks alike..big hug from argentina.

I also got into Last Bronx because of the Saturn port, where I learned that the AI was stupidly easy as soon as I played the Model 2 version, lol. Great video showing off its strengths, but I'd also add the universal guard cancel system helped the game immensely, as it kept you in your feet and protected you at the last second. Yoko is my favorite character to play, and I like Mikey a lot too.

I had never even heard of Last Bronx until I saw it in magazines. I loved it on my Saturn, and was impressed with the use of the VDP2 chip and the high resolution. I liked that they tried something different by using weapons. Since I didn't ever play the arcade game (and as you said most people didn't), I didn't feel like I was missing anything from the arcade.

Last Bronx was rather underrated and, it's a shining example of the big trend in Japan during the 90's of the mixed-media approach to marketing (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure 90's OVA, Manga & Game are another great example of this practice!) that essentially predates the viral marketing of the 00's in the U.S. and, the social media approach used over the last decade in general. Had they applied the same approach outside Japan with Last Bronx things may have gone a little better.. But it's always gonna be a niche game, one that is much better than it's general reputation for sure though.

  • @wolfgangpuff7030

Sega released this to compete with Soul Edge. By the time Last Bronx was released, it was mostly ignored in the US. Virtua Fighter 2 was by far Sega’s most popular arcade fighter in 95-96 and seemed to all but disappear once Tekken 2 arrived. To be fair, the mid to late 90s arcade scene was made up of tons of fighting games. Between Cps2 and NeoGeo hardware, it was hard enough to keep up with releases let alone from other companies like Midway and Atari. When you add that to the Namco and Sega fighters, it’s very easy for new IPs to be overlooked. Though I enjoyed Last Bronx in the arcade (only ever saw it in one arcade off Beach BLVD in HB CA) and purchased it at the end of August in 97 for my Saturn, my friends would rather play 8 month old Soul Blade.

Never heard of this before and it actually looks pretty interesting. If there has ever been another fighting game with a character wielding a sansetsukon, I certainly haven't heard of it. The anime for this probably isn't that good, but I might try to find it and check it out.

Last Bronx was always one of those games that looked really cool to me, but I didn't even know it existed until long after the PS2 was out. Whenever this does get a SEGA AGES release, I will definitely pick up as soon as I can, and I'd love to check out the manga and some of the external material, too :D

I would have loved if the titular music was just "this is the LAST..... BRONX..... there are no more.... LAST BRONX..."
And as much as there are disappointments about the home conversion, it was so stereotypical, it is almost comforting that it fit in perfectly. Not for the $50 the MSRP prob was though.

A 3D fighter with more focus on weapons, sound like a familiar Namco franchise, wouldn't you agree? The only thing missing is guest characters, like imagine if Shōtarō Kaneda from Akira or Spike from Cowboy Bebop were guest characters, that would be kind of cool, impractical, but cool.
