    We used to throw pebbles in front of street sweeper. Man would yell and shake his fist at us. All a big performance cause he would bring us Popsicles in summer. Miss those days.

      Unlikely, so based on the age of the box and the tools the original guy who owned the tool box likely passed away recently.

    Some man died and someone tossed their beloved tools. Now from heaven someone is very excited and happy to see you cleaning and restoring their tools. Would love to see you clean up most of the rest of the tools from that box. Great video. I remember the big yellow street sweepers in the spring trying to remove the sand from winter ice sanding.

    Ah yes. The horse drawn street sweeper. A self sustaining job if I ever heard of one.
    I read an article many years ago about polution in big cities caused by traffic. They were talking about road apples. 😁
    I think the wire brush with the scraper is the cut off end of a painters wire brush. They are inexpensive so you don't mind cutting one down to do a particular job.
    Okay you caught me on the thermometer. I was thinking it was a test thermometer like the kind we used to test the wash line temperatures at work.
    I laughed enough to startle Lydia when you said the taste. 😁
    The seal puller is beautiful.

    Just cleaned out a conex Wednesday and found a few old rusty tools. 7" Dewitt Visegrip and a pair of Compton U Set 12" scissors with a patent date of 1941, Armstrong lathe knurling tool, and two Carr Lane toggle squeeze hand clamp with cushioned anvils.

    My town does sweeping every spring, to help keep the storm drains from winter sanding build up. You can hear them coming from miles away. I used a thermometer like that working in the lab of an aluminum finishing plant, to monitor solution specs. What a great night you had!

      The company that’s contracted to run the recycling centers in our area has a shop: stuff that’s too good to throw away will be kept and sold there. A lot of usable things still end up in the containers, but you will get into real trouble if you take things. Still, I grabbed a neat wooden box once - the furniture dumpster is kind of out of sight.

    Wow! I think that tool box was put out by mistake. The little town nearest the farm, where we took out tomatoes, had street sweepers until the earlty1950's as wagons were used (along with pickup trucks) to bring the tomatoes to the tomato sheds for packing and shipping. Men with brooms as horse dripping's were common. Jacksonville, Texas was the Tomato Capital of the World in those days. Send fall weather down here as it is 106 at 4:12 pm. Stay safe...captjack.

    Wow! That 'poor man's flea market' find was one for the books! Those tools will all clean up nicely, but to find a bunch of Snap-on and MAC tools is like hitting the jackpot! I grew up in Los Angeles and remember seeing the street sweepers. Actually, I remember them waking me up about sun-up! Our neighborhood used to have signs that prohibited parking on one side of the street on a particular day of the week so the sweepers could get though unimpeded and the other side of the street had a different day designated. I wish we still had them around!

    That mechanical broom must have been lost 😂. I’m sure the main drag in CP (127 st.?) is probably swept on the 12/8 shift because the curb is accessible or during the day between 8 am and 9am it’s called restricted parking. The guy manually sweeping with the push cart the cart was known as a can carrier and the job was primarily given to men who were on light duty.
    The water wagon was known as a flusher. I don’t think they are in use any more except maybe after a parade. Ah! the good old days!!

  • @MrPhil1969
    @MrPhil1969 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    That was one heck of a score.Those Snap-on pry bars have the absolute best angle for prying. Compare the profile to the head of a Craftsman and you will see the difference the slightest profile change makes on ease of use and versatility. As for the sweeper, 10 years of my life was spent working on those. I know every inch of that one you saw. I worked at the dealer level for 8 years and worked for the manufacturer for 2 years. Fun fact: That machine is specifically designed for NYC sanitation. There are features on that that you will not find on any other one built by Global Sweeper (formally Johnston Sweeper). They also built a bunch of CNG powered sweepers for NYC. Also there is no mechanical connection between the engine and the drive wheels. It's all hydro-statically driven at a max pressure of 6500 psi. The city's units are governed at 40 mph but we had similar units with the same drive train that would travel at 65 mph. Imagine going 65 mph sitting in that cab knowing there is no driveshaft spinning that axle. It was cool to be a part of that companies history.

    ScoutCrafter,
    Here in the thriving metropolis of the Town of Marion, VA, population 5000, we have a street sweeper come through twice each year. Our street sweeper is politically correct in that it uses no water. Our sweeper is strictly dry. Like Pigpen in Peanuts, it leaves a cloud of dust behind it as it heads down the street.
    You should get a gold medal for your Poor Man's Flea Market Haul.

    Great video Scout. When I was selling tools, guys who worked in auto radiator shops loved them wood handled screwdrivers because radiator fluid is so slippery and wood handles still provided a good grip over plastic handled screwdrivers. Have you seen the prices EBAY is asking for USA made Vise Grips?

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It’s crazy- The Petersen vise grips are plentiful but the Malco’s drive up the prices. 😃👍

    Fuller was a mid grade make of tools going back to the '60s or earlier, when "made in Japan " meant something different then I does now. I was was working in a hardware store, and we carried the fuller brand. One day I was stocking a new batch of Fullers, and one had SEARS cast into the handle. Of course, the premium SEARS tool was Craftsman.

    Had a small tool box of my dad's for 46 years and just used one of the tools for first time last month; a hose pincher. Looks like a small c-clamp but it is used to clamp off a small hose, or tube, to keep it from leaking while you get the pressure source turned off. Also, he had the same exact thermometer as you showed, used it to check daughters fridge for proper cooling. My dad was a steamfitter and HVAC guy.

      Hi Chuck- I did but can’t find the video now. I also showed how to make a portable paint booth that was made from a cardboard box with a lightbulb to keep the item warm and bake the paint on. I usually just put the painted item on my oil burner and cover it with a cardboard box. 😃👍

    What a great find I'm shocked someone would toss that out but it happens. When you said " The Taste " I lost it I have said that forever sometimes you get you just get the look and some people have a sense of humor it's like camera for a lower GI and the uper GI difference " the taste "

    Back in the 80's a buddies inlaws passed and the wife thought having a yard sale would be a good way to get rid of some stuff. My buddy told his wife all he wanted was the mechanics toolbox, father in law was a deisil mechanic. Turns out the wife sold the roll around for $10 with all the sockets and wrenches, he was so mad he was spitting bullets.
    Lucky I got the 1959 craftsman 10" radial saw before the wife gave it away. I have the original spiral manual and base for the saw, it works great but who uses them these days.

    Great find!!! It’s hard to believe people would toss out tools especially good ones! I have my dad’s and granddad’s tools and I’m 71. Take good care of them and my sons can have them as well. It’s good to see that you have the skills to keep your finds out of the landfills! Nice job!!
