      I know from watching the show that that particular guy is employed full time by shop, not like the other experts who are consultants/appraisers. Maybe he wasn't in that day but it was worth calling him for such an expensive coin?

    man that first guy really could not negotiate. he was way too friendly and accepting, making rick and cory feel comfortable with only giving him around 50%.

    • @blindjustice8718
      @blindjustice8718 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what pawn shops usually give. 40-60% depending on how fast they think it will move once it clears the hold time (on everything except coins). Very rarely do they give 75-80% and that's only if they have a buyer lined up or the demand exceeds the supply (20 people a month come in asking if we have an XYZ and we see 3 of them come in each year).

      @@greennbean listen that's a half truth and a dirty one at that. Rick does so much business with these graders that he gets these grades for basically penny's, 5 to 10 dollars max per coin. Graders cut deals like this for regular customers and charge normal people significantly more. So to say he takes all the risk is disingenuous at best and plain scamming at worst. As to the grade on the gold coin it's clearly not going to be BU but it would definitely be in the high AU category not mint state but were talking about a coin made in 1800's. Very rarely would you find a mint coin that old.

      Not really. I used to run a store that dealt with CCGs. Top value cards I bought at 50% online store value. The rest I bought for $1/LB bulk. (NEVER go by what you see on eBay unless it's from a store. What people *ask for it* and what people *buy it for* are two different animals. The ones sitting there with a high $ value are still sitting there for a reason.)
      I sold at 10% under online store value. This kept business in-house. (Online stores usually gave 33% value on purchasing).
      That said, if someone asks what XYZ is worth, I respond "whatever someone else is willing to give you for it."
      As a store owner, that item (cards in my instance) pays rent, utilities, and payroll. That is *if* you can sell it. Some stuff moved in *seconds* when people in the store saw what I just bought. Other stuff sat and sat and sat.
      In the pawn store example, they have to hold everything they buy except coins for 60 or 90 days so police can see if they are stolen (notice how they study people when they ask "how'd you get it?"). Time between purchase and sale ("warehousing") is overhead that cuts into profits.
      This particular pawn shop has 700 employees. A storefront that's a city block in Las Vegas. Utilities running 24/7. At least 3 off-site warehouses that I have heard of.
      That's a lot of overhead. Each item carries some of that cost.
      50% of low value is their standard offer. And it's reasonable when you understand business.

      Sounds like a good idea but the only way to sell a coin like that without owning a widely popular TV show pawn shop that gets to advertise their items to millions of people is to bring it to an auction. You wait a few months for a coin auction, hope that there is enough interest that it reaches the 15k (expert value) mark and doesn't go for a few thousand or less if there is low interest and if all goes well you pay them a 30% fee and you're left with 10k that they'll pay a few months down the line. Not that bad of a deal at 8k imo. Especially seeing as he was asking for 5K coming in and most pawn shops would have consulted an "expert" in private, they just do it for the sake of making the TV show more interesting and paid the 5K or even less.

      it's crazy to me that these guys are never smart enough to go somewhere else.. I mean if I had a $15k coin and they offered me $8000 I would look elsewhere, at the BARE minimum I would hit a few other pawn shops before I gave it away for just over 50% of it's value

    • @RtasVadumeeKostas

      If you sell it at an auction, it's 30% off due to fees, so 10k remaining plus the hassle of time spent to get to one. I think 8k is a fair price
