    If Bentancur had been interviewed here in the UK and not in South America I have no doubt he would not have made that comment. The reporter asking the question should have been called out as well. If the subject had been Destiny there would have been absolute carnage in the media.

    A few years ago, U20 World Cup was held in Korea. At that time, Valverde of Uruguayan national team did a "eye-tearing" goal ceremony to Korean fans at the stadium. They even took a picture of the whole team after the game, which most of players made "eye-tearing" gestures. Bentancur was also in the Uruguayan national team.
    I strongly advise Bentancur not to come to Korea next month.
    What would have happened if Sonny had told the same joke on Udogie or Bissouma in TV interview in Korea?

    • @FlyingKoreanMinja
      @FlyingKoreanMinja 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Was Bentancur doing the said gesture as well? Unless he was seen doing the same slanted eye gesture, it's a huge stretch trying to punish him for simply being in the same team as Valverde. Are all French NT players pedophiles because they played with Benzema?
      I don't believe he did it with any malicious intent. Given the history of Uruguayan players, it is evident that they are unfortunately very ill educated on a such matter. He should be participating in the preseason tour and apologize.

    The thing about Bentacur's comment is that it's now Sonny's problem to fix, even though he had nothing to do with it. As the person the comment was about and as team captain, it will be on him to smooth everything over, which really sucks, because it puts the onus and responsibility on him when he is not the one at fault. I like Bentacur and I don't think the comment was malicious, but it was massively massively disappointing, and he should certainly do more than an Insta story to make public amends.

      Yeah. While I understand such comment is normalized & acceptable in Uruguay vs the rest of the world,, that doesn't make it ok for fans in other parts of the country.

    Race is not something that can be joked about these days, and it was a stupid and ignorant thing to say by western liberal standards.

    It’s not the first time Dele Alli was banned for 1 game and fined for mocking an Asian man and Covid comments. It’s not a good look but these players are employed for their footballing abilities and not for their media skills. I’m sure to Rodri he saw it as banter and maybe there is an element of that in the dressing room. The broadcasters should have taken the decision to not broadcast the interview. So it looks like a cultural thing. Casual racism is not called out enough. Our own press have recently been touting it. I suspect they will keep him off the tour with some sort of excuse. It remains to be seen if our media pursue it next season. Which would make them hypocrites but hey nothing new there.

      Différent cultures/social norms can take joke in different ways. And it is not what other races to decide whether it's racism to Asian or not. I personally reckon that any racial slurs or banters can be made between frds, but not on media. & some fans talk like they're entitled to take it as a joke on behalf of Asians making things worse tbh.
      Why it's so offensive? Individual's unique characteristic and genetic diversity are completely dismissed. Again how human beings all look the same?
      Did Rodri say Son and person (A) look the same? its not about being offended. The comment was ill-advised and inappropriate for public broadcast. The "they all look the same" comment dehumanizes the individual person as a caricature of their ethnicity. It is a very common rcial "joke" against asians to make fun of their ethnlclty, implying they all sound look and behave the same like robots with no individual characteristics. And to say that to describe your captain on public? Why make the joke? seriously. why make it? Its not original nor creative. Its a comment used to point fun at them. Can I make mnkey chants at vinijr and brush it up as a joke and that everyone should pipe down because everyone is a "snowflake" for being offended? Open your eyes.

      I'm not out to get Benta for this since he apologized and considering past incidents with other Uruguayan players it has to do more with the country's perception as a whole rather than Benta individually.
      However, the remark does have racist connotation. If he said the same with Biss, Sarr, Royal, or Udogie, the outrage wouldve been worse. Hope he learns from it and doesn't make the same mistake.

You white can make joke whatever you want, write something racial joke towards Black in the public and enjoy their reaction. Or go use your family as a source of "Joke" to entertain people around. Mum or sister etc who cares. Asians said they take Rodrigo's joke as racism, don't pulling out your white narrative here and accuse Asians being sensitive. I'm quite surprised that people like you reckon whatever comes out of your mouth can be joke, even though not everyone has the same exact standards regarding what is or is not offensive.

We know exactly what that joke implies. Don’t play dumb, it’s like seeing nothing wrong to the slant eye gesture or a mnkey chant. I am sure Son has had these raclial abuses when he was a youth in Germany.
